Monkey Shoulder is a blended malt scotch whisky, selected from three of Speysides finest Single Malts and matured in Bourbon casks using batches of just 27 casks for a smoother, richer taste. Nate's Notes My first thought was wow, how smooth is this! A very smooth whisky but one that still know's its origins as dragons breath. Hints of vanilla with what I would call a smooth butterscotch sweetness lingering in the finish. Friendly, approachable, perfect for the whisky novice and the seasoned aficionado. This whisky was designed to mix but it's damn good neat. I like versatile spirits that can be enjoyed with mixers but also those that shine when neat. This is that. Delicious to sip on as I'm writing this, but one I know would be perfect in an Old Fashioned or even a Boulevardier. Minimum order of 3 bottles mixed and matched across our range of wines and spirits.

For the record, I used to hate scotch! To me it was undrinkable and I couldn’t get over the taste. My brother told me to try Johnnie Walker Blue Label and said it doesn’t taste like a scotch. I bought the little bottle for about $70, and it didn’t taste like the scotches I’ve tried in the past. Of course the bigger bottle costing $200-275, it is a little out of my range as a go too.I put that out there to help describe my review with the monkey. I have polished off several different brands/ bottles of scotch. Mostly of the 14 year age. Yes she makes a difference. There really is nothing remarkable at all about the monkey. It’s not bad, it’s not terrible, but it’s okay. If you have had aged scotch you can tell a huge difference. The monkey lacks complexity, not ... MoreFor the record, I used to hate scotch! It tastes young. Not a smoky taste or aftertaste, no caramel, vanilla or butterscotch. It’s slightly sweet and a mild finish that goes away quickly from your palate.Don’t get it twisted now… I’m not a snob, but when you have several stellar pricier scotches this one leaves a lot to be desired. Oban 14 year; Chivas 14 year; Glenfiddich 14 year and Blue label are all good scotches. For me Blue is where it’s and created a monster in me preferring the higher end stuff. As a side note: yes I purchased from Total Wine. For the price paid I can drink much better bourbon for way less.

As a single malt drinker there are very few blends I buy but I make an exception to Monkey Shoulder.First of all, it's a blended malt not a blended scotch and the blending of Glenfiddich, The Balvenie and Kinninvie is masterful. I do wish though that we here in Oz would get the 43% abv version available in the U.S. as it is slightly richer in taste. There is also a peaty version of this called Smokey Monkey available in Europe but not as yet in Australia.Smokey Monkey has just the right amount of dryish highland peat in the mix to make it very tasty!Come on LL, how about geting Smokey Monkey for release in the Australian market?!

When my go-to Scotch (Macallan 12 sherry cask) became unobtanium, I searched & tasted lots of obtainable scotch, notably the stuff that sold for $50-$90, and never had anything I could afford light my fire. Then I bought the new edition of Jackson's "Complete Guide..." where they scored Monkey Should at 88: "The 80s are, in our view, distinctive and exceptional." So I bought it. It is NOT a blend, but a 'vatted malt'. It deserves its rating. It is a bargain. Buy it, drink it neat. Don't waste it with mixers.

Although I am a devoted bourbon drinker, Monkey Shoulder IS a very nice scotch and I do enjoy it occasionally. You will be completely surprised by this unburned, upliftinly aromatic, and smooth scotch if you associate a fine scotch with images of campfire smoke, wood paneled, dark rooms, and old power brokers with mutton-chops whose grunts count as conversation instead of flexible old spaces, the soft finery of an undressed contessa next to a roaring fireplace in the palace at Marseilles, or the memory-evo. You'll find yourself inhaling this golden aromatic elixir repeatedly to renew the impression it gives you of being on a beach vacation in an ancient castle, even in the most banal of situations. They claim to blend to a flavor profile but Newer bottle seems to give a slightly different experience than the bottlings from a couple years ago. Word is they changed the three whiskeys that make the blend now that they opened a lowlands distillery. Seems a tad harsher and younger. May have more younger filler whiskey in the mix. Its a good entry level and I would still enjoy a neat dram ofnthis for the price.Malt, honey, and marmalade.
From start to finish, MS is pure bliss. A lot of honey, sweetness, a VERY LITTLE touch of spice, and floral aromas are present. The conclusion is brief yet enjoyable. I generally adore Islay scotch but it's good to have a really smooth and easy dram every now and then. If you want a SUPER easy sipper at a budget price, you can't go wrong with MS. By the way, you wouldn't realize that this beverage has a 43% ABV. This whisky is SOFT! True, it's a blended scotch, but a decent blend is just fine. This mixture works well.
That the Monkey Shoulder is an excellent scotch at a great price is probably one of the worst kept secrets. I am glad to see the price remain unchanged at under $30 amid the ongoing inflation. Not to worry about this being a NAS (No Age-Statement) whiskey. Who cares about the age when a whiskey tastes this good? The Monkey Shoulder is robust and smooth, with lots of malt, vanilla, oak, fruitiness, and sugar cane on the pallet, with minimal alcohol burn! It's very easy to drink however you chose to enjoy it: mix, neat, on the rock, or with a dash of water. It is entry-level scotch at its best, all for a bargain price of under $30.
Just got my 1st bottle of Monkey Shoulders batch 27 Scotch Whisky, & it's very, very nice. The 27 comes from 9 barrels, from each of the 3 different "Speyside" region single malt distilleries. Balvenie, Kininnvie, & Glennfiddich. On the nose, you get the Single Malt Scotch smell along with a little bit of honey, citrus & a hair of floral notes.A short-ish/medium finish, along with pretty good mouth feel (not too thin). I do get a slight hint of Vanilla & Caramel from the bourbon oak barrels. At 86 proof this can really shine neat, w/a wee bit of water, or on the rocks....BUT,it can take a lot mixes ! Not just the every day Scotch & soda, water or neat. This is like mixing a sweet wheat whiskey and Dewars 12 yr. old together. So Monkey Shoulders can be used ... MoreJust got my 1st bottle of Monkey Shoulders batch 27 Scotch Whisky, & it's very, very nice. The 27 comes from 9 barrels, from each of the 3 different "Speyside" region single malt distilleries. Ok, so I understand that everyone has different taste buds, but just for fun, thought I'd share my thoughts. My son , a scotch newbie brought a bottle of this home and asked me what I thought. I'm an old fart, so have consumed at least my fair share of Scots whiskey. Good. And Bad. I'd put this one in the OH MAN, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING BAD category. It reminds me of some stupid cheap stuff I bought back in college, 'cause I was really poor. To this day, I refer to that swill as "old stump shovel". This monkey shoulder thing reminds me of a bad batch of old stump shovel that they tried to save by dumping in a bunch of sweetener, citric acid, and god knows what else. After a few swigs, and due consideration, I dumped it out, and poured some Jack Black. STILL can't ... MoreOk, so I understand that everyone has different taste buds, but just for fun, thought I'd share my thoughts. it’s a great scotch for $30. it’s blended but a blended malt meaning no grain whiskey in this. only single malts. granted they are probably much younger than their counterparts being sold separately but still it’s all malted barley. it’s not complex like a more expensive single malt but it’s significantly more complex than anything else in the price range. guy down below in the comments comparing this to blue label or oban is crazy. those are $100-240 bottles. i think the man is missing the point here. this is a $30 bottle that drinks way above a blend or a normal NAS. i would say the same quality as a lot of entry level 10 or 12 year single malts, which normally are priced between $50-65
