A Product That Flatters to Deceive

I bought this unit brand new from B&H around May 2012 with the intention of using its reputed midi patchbay capabilities. However, repeated attempts to send sysex information (song files) to and from an external sequencer and a drum machine (both of which are working perfectly) have been totally unsuccessful. I quickly realised that I was not doing anything wrong and that it was the XT which was the culprit -- it in some way corrupts the information and renders it useless, shutting down the sequencer and drummachine in the process. (By contrast, the same sysex info. is transferred flawlessly by an Edirol UM-550, a M-Audio Midisport 8x8/s, and a M-Audio Midisport 4x4.) However, though they promised to work on a solution and to keep me informed, this is yet to happen over 18 months later. Surely customers who have forked out big bucks for their products deserve better treatment? All in all, MOTU is the worst tech company I have ever dealt with and the MIDI Express XT the worst buy I ever made. An utter waste of money if you want to use it as a patchbay / router. I would strongly advise anyone thinking of purchasing it to not do so.

I bought this because I needed more midi ports than what my M-audio 4x4 Midisport could offer, and MOTU's XT was without doubt the best option I could find, both regarding features and price. What I am happy very with:- Build quality- Option to use the front ports for "ad-hoc" tasks- Routing features in the Clockworks utility- That it comes with a power switchSo far it seems stable and trustworthy, and I hope I can keep it for several years. Now running on Win7 64-bit.I don't think I will be using the SMPTE part, but it's nice to have for possible future tasks.Recommended!

MOTU midi express XT USB is awesome!
14 June 2012

9I recently purchased a brand new USB version of the midi express XT to replace my older parallel version. The older parallel units require a parallel printer port directly attached to the motherboard of your PC (add-on parallel ports will not work!) and support for the older parallel units stops with Windows XP. Parallel ports are going away and support for Windows XP is nearing its end. I wanted to be able to upgrade my computer in the future without losing the functionality I depend on with the midi express XT, which is the focal point of the functionaility I enjoy with midi portion of my recording studio.A while back I freaked out when the midi express XT came off the market. There is no other product like it in the market place. Recently, however, MOTU brought back the midi express XT, for which I am very, very grateful. When it arrived, I pulled the old unit out of my rack and replaced it with the new unit. The driver install was simple and I had no problems. The unit works flawlessly. Thank you Musician's Friend and thank you MOTU!

Pleased with MIDI ExprXT USB Interface

MOTU devices have always been excellent in quality, and the new MIDI Express XT USB Interface did not let me down. Easy to set-up and worked perfectly from the moment this device was implemented into the studio.

Very powerful midi box that allows you to setup midi however you like. Fully standalone after you set it up as well.

The MOTU MIDI Express XT is an excellent MIDI interface.Currently using it with Pro Tools controlling various synths and sending MIDI Beat Clock to an MPC, and so far the performance is tight, snappy, fast, accurate. The MOTU MIDI driver was easy to install (and still supported). The USB connection goes straight into my 2013 Mac Pro (no USB hubs in the middle). Also having a power on/off button seems to be a rarity (most MIDI interfaces are USB powered) but something I like.Don't have any SYSEX experiences with it, but controlling synths and sending MIDI Beat Clock to an MPC has been just excellent!

Sysex Corruption

Bought this to function as both a standalone MIDI patchbay, as well as a USB MIDI interface. It corrupts SysEx messages from both my Moog Subsequent 37, as well as my DSI Tetra. After many, many hours spent with technical support from Moog, DSI and MOTU over four years, turns out there is a reproducible bug where the MOTU simply fails to transmit the data it receives correctly.Given that a MIDI interface has exactly one job - transmitting MIDI data - and the MIDI spec has been relatively unchanged for over thirty years, this is really poor. MOTU have not come to the party to fix this bug, and I have an expensive interface sitting in a cupboard. It also suffers from high MIDI latency and OS X over USB, in my experience. I've sold every piece of my MOTU gear as it's all been buggy

The best of the best midi interfaces
3 November 2019

If you have a lot of midi devices that need to be connected together or with a computer, Motu midi xpress xt will do just fine with this task. I connected my drum machine, 3 synthesizers, a midi keyboard and a behrenger xtouch and everything works fine for me with Logic Pro and Ableton. In addition, MIDI outputs / inputs can be changed programmatically, and if you want to play on a MIDI keyboard, the sound will come from the synthesizer and this will be easy to do without reconnecting MIDI cables.
