Mr Fothergill's Burpless Cucumber Vegetable Seed

(32 reviews)

Cucumber - Telegraph Improved This is the traditional favourite frame cucumber, and a good reliable cropper. Sow indoors for surest results from February to May, 0.5cm deep, on the seed's edge, in small pots of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 21-24°C is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. When plants have developed 3 or 4 leaves, transplant to 12cm pots and grow on in cooler, but not cold conditions. Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions, before planting out 60cm apart, from April to June, into fertile, well-drained soil. Or sow outdoors from May to June, for ease, where they are to crop. Sow two seeds per position, 0.5cm deep, directly into finely-prepared, fertile, well-drained soil, which has already been watered. Allow 60cm between rows. When large enough, thin to leave the stronger plant. Harvest from July to October.

Lettuce was not great at germinating the seeds. Price and the amount of seeds was fine.

We use these as cat litter collection bags for 2 cats. 95% of the time they hold up for 1 week worth of waste. Excess bag makes it easy to tie closed ready for depositing in the composting bin.

My little ones call them CuBumbers
8 October 2022

My first time growing our own food last Spring/Summer season and our cucumbers were amazing. I planted several seeds together and they all took off and produced so many cucumbers we couldn't keep up and we're giving them to family and friends who also loved them. Will definitely be adding these to this season's garden again. My two toddler aged daughter's loved just eating them straight of the plant and washed of course. But even the size of them were amazing and we had our resident frog who lived amongst the plant and kept all the naughty bugs at bay.

Germination rate is disappointing but for the money you pay for the seeds and not a whole plant it is okay.

Though take a bit longer than specified. 10 out of the 14 seeds germinated. I hope they grow ok.
