2nd failure of new TrailShot

Went on a long day scramble to Bean Peak in the Teanaway Washington State. This is my second failure of a TrailShot, this time the filter was brand new, first time use and all I could get was bareley a teaspoon with each hand pump. There is either a manufacturing or engineering flaw with this product causing these type of reported failures. I love MSR products, the stoves, tents, snowshoes. and my current Mini Works filter that I still use all ay back when it started out as a two stage carbon and paper filter. Having said that the TrailShot has a problem that needs to be fixed and I hope MSR is working for a solution.

Finally, the filter just quit working outright - the red filter element would just pop out of the housing when attempting to use it. I'd say I've filtered no more that ten liters through this "2000" liter thing. I've had a similar bad experience with MSR HyperFlow, although I've been able to use that filter much longer than the TrailShot. Sadly, MSR has simply not been able to field such a product to date and even if they were to introduce yet another offering, I'm totally done throwing good money their way.

The first time I used this was in a very clean stream. The second time was also in a very clean stream, but the filter was so clogged up from the first time that the flow rate had slowed to a dribble. Literally only tiny droplets would come out. Took me an hour to fill up a Nalgene. Luckily I had brought Aquamira, which enabled me to survive through the rest of my trip. I tried cleaning out this filter when I got home but it’s still useless. Everything I’ve ever bought from MSR has been terrible. Only company whose products I’ve ever had a real problem with. Not sure why they’re still in business. Will never buy anything from them again.

Didn’t last
12 July 2022

I bought this filter for a trip into the mountains in central Idaho last year. I really liked the small size and light weight for personal use. I really liked this filter from the very outset. Unfortunately it didn’t last. I did the recommended backflushing and followed all suggestions for taking care of it. After just a few months it quit working. Hardly any water would come through and it took forever just to get a small amount of water in your bottle. Unfortunate not worth the money. Wish I had bought a regular pump filter instead.

This worked great for about 3 trips. We loved how lightweight and easy to use it was… so much so that we bought a second one so we’d both have one when hiking separately. On our most recent backpacking trip we decided to only bring one as we were trying to cut weight as much as possible. That was a big mistake. We were struggling to get enough water for the two of us and our two dogs because the filter froze up and provided little to no flow. We only used it in flowing water where the input was not resting on the river bottom so we were very surprised. We took it apart twice on the trail and got increasingly irritated the longer we went. If would not recommend this product and if you already have it I’d absolutely recommend bringing something for backup. Probably ... MoreThis worked great for about 3 trips. GREAT filter, just don't skip on the maintenance!

The trailshot is great. I've been using one for about 3-4 years. Quick and easy to use and great for long portaging trips. Often find myself in the middle of a large lake and can quickly access drinking water on the go. Like most reviews have stated, the flow rate over time becomes less and less reliable. Out of the box it can take about 20L before becoming very slow to filter and almost to the point where it becomes unusable. The instructions to backwash by shaking the reservoir helps in the short term and will allow a few litres to pass through quickly before slowing down again.Initially disappointed in the lack of longevity (and not wanting to shell out $45 for a replacement filter every trip!) I searched for a solution. I found that completely disassembling the trailshot and removing the filter from the reservoir for cleaning will restore the trailshot to almost brand new. To clean the red filter, first safely remove it from the reservoir. It's a tight fit, so be careful when removing. Fill up a large basin of clean water (such as a kitchen sink) and quickly shake it in the water in long back and forth strokes. About 60-90 seconds should clear out any debris/sediment from the tubes. Let it dry completely before reinserting back into the reservoir.I do this after every trip as part of my post-camp clean. It can usually go for a whole weeklong portaging trip in the back country without slowing down.I highly recommend this product but just be sure to provide some regular maintenance!

The MSR Trailshot filter is a must have to make sure you won't catch your self without clean drinking water while in the backcountry. Simply put the hose in a stream, creek, or pond and start pumping. You can drinking straight from the filter or use it to refill your water supply, and then you're ready to move on.On it's own, the filter is perfect to supply 1 person with water, but if you're looking to supply water to 2 or more people, I would highly recommend the MSR Trail Base Kit (Includes this filter, and 2 bags to turn this into a gravity-fed filter set up.) With the kit, 2L or 4L of water can be filtered and stored for later use.As other reviewers have pointed out, this filter can get clogged easy depending on the amount of particles in the water you're ... MoreThe MSR Trailshot filter is a must have to make sure you won't catch your self without clean drinking water while in the backcountry. I have encountered this while trying to filter very dirty water. If this happens, simply clear the intake screen of any dirt/debris and it should flow well again. That is the only slightly inconvenient thing about this filter.Overall this is a simple, fantastic product and is a must have for anyone in my opinion.

Used the trailshot to filter drinking/cooking water on a three week backcountry trip. Probably filtered about 120L of water. The good: it works. The water came out clean and tasted good. The foot valve does a good job straining out larger particles/sand and the inner membrane gets the bacteria. I didn't get sick: mission accomplished. The bad: I think the design is a bit of a flop. You need one hand to hold your bottle and one to use the pump. That means you don't have a free hand to keep the suction line out of sand/dirt, which means the foot valve screen clogs up pretty quickly, slowing the flow until you rinse it. Not to mention that you're crouched down near water, which means you don't have a free hand to balance yourself.I found that even with a cleaned ... MoreUsed the trailshot to filter drinking/cooking water on a three week backcountry trip. I've switched to another filter that is much simpler and much faster.

If you don't pack a stove and like your cold coffee and are able to work with ultralight gear this should work for you. My first experience was like some of the negative reviews, after 8 liters of filtering clear water it tried to blow its insides out. A couple of years later I got it out and put in a new filter element. After a 7 day hike in the Olympics it was still working very well. When I got home I took it apart and flushed the filter element very well under strong running water. I took it out again on another 6 day backpack and again it was still working very well in the end. I am careful to keep the small prefilter at the end of the inlet tube in a clear part of the stream and away from the bottom or any rocks, etc. I treat it with care and in return it has ... MoreIf you don't pack a stove and like your cold coffee and are able to work with ultralight gear this should work for you. I've had this thing for a couple years now and happened to see negative reviews on this rei app for this product. I figured I'd give my 2 cents... This simple filter has worked flawlessly for me on a few dozen trips. As of this review, the negative reviews i see are by people who don't know a couple important facts for filters. #1 don't let them freeze... ever. #2 pressure = flow rate. It needs to be applied carefully for any filter. I hope anyone who buys this product understands what the limitations are. It won't work well if you abuse it.
