MSR WindBurner Stove System Combo CV2

$605.95

(34 reviews)

Designed to support backcountry food preparation for large groups or multi-course meals, the radiant-heated MSR WindBurner Stove System Combo delivers consistent, all-condition performance. The set includes a nesting stove, a large-capacity sauce pot, an 8" skillet, and a strainer lid. The stove's state-of-the-art burner utilizes two modes of heat transfer, convective and radiant, to ensure that maximum performance is achieved regardless of conditions. The burner is enclosed in a heat exchanger, protecting it fully from the wind and positioning heat where you need it, directly underneath your cooking pot. As a result, heat loss is minimal and cooking time is greatly reduced. Average boil time is 6.2 minutes. An internal pressure regulator equalizes fuel pressure and guarantees a consistent heat output in all temperatures. This frees you from worrying about poor performance in cold weather and makes certain that you are best able to take advantage of any and all fuel available in your 4 ounce or 8 ounce IsoPro fuel canister (sold separately and not available for purchase online). An included folding canister stand helps to stabilize the entire system when in use. With built-in heat exchangers that ensures efficiency, the 2.5 liter hard-anodized aluminum WindBurner Sauce Pot and WindBurner Ceramic Skillet are designed to work hand-in-hand with the stove itself and have Durable Fusion ceramic non-stick surfaces for consistent heating and easy clean up. Integrated handles make the pot and skillet safer to use and they fold down neatly when not in use. All components nest together as a single unit. A strainer lid bolsters cooking efficiency and makes serving more convenient. The entire system weighs 29 ounces.

I used my MSR WindBurner Combo Stove System for a trip to BWCA in August. We used the WindBurner exclusively all week due to a fire ban in the area. The WindBurner came through with flying colors! Super light, breaks down into a small bundle making it easy to pack. What I like most is that the pan and pot fit onto the burner securely… The design also keeps the flame going even with the wind blowing. I would highly recommend the MSR WindBurner Combo Stove System to everyone!

Expensive, poorly designed crap.

Wow, what a piece of junk. Let me list the ways…(1) each pot/pan has its own windscreen, a waste of space and weight. (2) You can’t use a regular pot on the stove because no air will get to the burner (are you kidding me, MSR?). (3) Because of the windscreens the pot/pan are unstable sitting on anything but flat ground (really, MSR?) (4) Pan warps permanently due to heat. (5) $279 for all these flaws? Get a grip, MSR. This is complete junk with crappy engineering unworthy of MSR.

After almost 3 years of offroad camping excursions and backpacking trips, I must say that this set has performed flawlessly. I'm guessing around 40 meals or so and tons of water boiling. The set is definitely showing some wear and tear, but it's still holding up. I haven't experienced any issues with simmering or the flame being blown out. That being said, it doesn't simmer as well as I would like and I usually use a folding windscreen. It helps to keep the heat from dissipating. I have lots of titanium cookware that I use, but I really like the efficiency of the heat exchanger technology and performance of the radiant burner. I bought this set because I have the MSR Windburner 1L cook system. It works amazing in very windy conditions. This set is not as good in the wind, but still has decent performance. It's been cold a few times (around -1°C) and I can say that the regulator has worked just fine. There was one time I had trouble when it was colder. I found that my Kovea propane adapter worked with a 1lb propane bottle. I now use propane since I refill my 1lb bottles at a fraction of the cost. Obviously not if we're backpacking. All in all, I can say that I'm getting my moneys worth and after all the use and abuse I put this pot and pan through, the ceramic coating is still holding up. (always a touch of olive oil though). It's hard to justify the price, but I do like MSR products. As a gear junkie I have tons of stoves and cookware. This fusion ceramic coating is a step up from Hard Annodized aluminum non stick coating. It definitely lasts longer and can handle more abuse. It's a nice change from titanium and stainless. Just don't use metal utensils or abrasive scrubbies. Soaking and sponges will prolong the life. Cheers

I've used many backcountry stoves over they years, and this one is easily in my top 5.I recently used it for a 5 day portage to cook for 3 people. With one 450g MSR fuel canister I was able to cook most of our meals. I cooked 3 packages of real mac & cheese, 7 freeze dried meals (boiled until reduced), bacon and eggs, quesadillas, 6 packages of ramen, popcorn, and a few boils of water for tea.The efficiency blew me away. I used the provided windscreen which really helps (yes, even if it's called the Windburner, the extra wind blocking makes a huge difference)The canister ran out on the last day, we had an extra 450g can and maybe used 10% of it for cooking.I've seen people complain that you can only use the proprietary pots and pans - but this is what makes ... MoreI've used many backcountry stoves over they years, and this one is easily in my top 5.I recently used it for a 5 day portage to cook for 3 people. With one 450g MSR fuel canister I was able to cook most of our meals. I don't get it.It does get a hotspot on the pan, but you can always move the pan around by taking out of its "seat" - I was able to cook eggs without problems. The ceramic non-stick coating on both the pot and pan is a really nice touch. The pot has a lid that locks into place - great for when you need do use the built in strainer. What is lacking in this kit is a carrying case / pouch. It comes all loose and up to you to come up with something. At this time MSR doesn't offer a dedicated case for the kit and because of this it loses a star for my review. It's a good idea to have a bandana or extra kitchen cloth to wrap the stove in so it doesn't scratch the pot (when storing)I would absolutely recommend this for groups - the quality on this is top notch.

Incompatibility for no reason
23 July 2022

You can only use this with Windburner compatible kit. We’ve got a nice collapsible kettle that we can’t use with this. Why, MSR, didn’t you just design the vents into the base instead of into the pots and accessories? Why also do you not make an adapter with the vents in it, thus allowing people to use non MSR pots / pans / kettles? Could be such a great product, but this lets it down massively.

MSR WINDBURNER COMBO

Versatile cooking options for day picnics or camping. The cookware is lightweight and durable. Cooking with the skillet option is an improvement over the usual single burners as the heat seems to be better distributed over the frying pan. The burner works in various weather situations with wind, rain, or snow. I would recommend the product along with optional cookware for those people who enjoy outdoor cooking. It may be on the higher priced options but it seems to have a better quality overall.

I have used this system for a 3-week combined car/bicycle/hiking trip, plus some shorter trips. It has cocked food well in many different situations. However, it has a lot of issues which leaves me with the feeling that this stove has entered into the market without proper testing and/or some misses in quality control. I did not expect this from MSR. 1. The lid is held on by a hook and a ""clamping roller"", however the hook on my sauce pot are only slightly engaging with the lid. The lid often comes off during transport, and the canister and burner jumps out. Also unsafe when pouring hot water with the lid on. 2. This stove does not simmer in the slightest wind. The lid often comes off during transport, and the canister and burner jumps out. Also unsafe when pouring hot water with the lid on. 2. This stove does not simmer in the slightest wind. It is so easy to fix - but i as the consumer shouldn't fix it. The problem is in the air intake, the nozzle shoots up a thin gas flow and draws in air in from the 4 holes and mixes in the burner head. But when you turn down the stove to get a simmer, the gas flow gets unstable and the slightest wind interferes, causing the flame to go out. Adding a simple foil screen with a 10mm clearance around the intake solved the problem. Then the wind can't blow straight across the gas flow. Simple. 3. The nut that holds the nozzle in place comes loose. It should have had thread fastener before mounting it. 4. It comes without a bag. Provide a simple bag to protect it or hold it together when the lid comes off. 5. The pans coating does not hold up in the center above flame, heat not as evenly distributed as i hoped. 6. Pan doesn't fit anything when packing the set and gets scratched under the pot. 7. Sound. It's almost silent when at full power but turning it down to medium the flame starts oscillating and gets quite noisy. 8. The burner/pot connection is stable, but sometimes hard to fit together. Positives: Handle - perfect design. Folding legs - lovely. Lighter than it looks. Rubber + silicone details. Overall it's okay but im disappointed. I hoped for better and it needs improvement.

I couldn’t be happier. This is by far the best camping stove set that I have ever purchased. I will be sticking with MSR and I’m going to pick I up other accessories. Easy to use, packs well, it’s durable, light, does well in windy conditions and the time to boil is fast and efficient. I’m so happy with my purchase! I’d recommend getting this set!

Great product. Bought it for an 8-day sea kayaking trip in Glacier Bay. It performed flawlessly. Having a skillet was nice for a longer trip as it opened up the cooking options. The system stacks nicely and is light weight and not bulky. The pressure regulator works pretty well for a backpacking stove allowing at least some variability in the heat output. This is particularly useful when using the skillet. Both the pot and the skillet have an interlocking mechanism that connects tightly into the burner thereby reducing heat loss. I have not used a windshield with the system (a windshield is not included) and it seems unnecessary in most conditions. I'm curious to try it out in high wind conditions; seems like a windshield might still be useful.

I have owned many MSR Stoves (Pocket Rocket, Reactor, Whisperlite International) and this stove fills a spot in the MSR line-up, for me, that has been missing. I call it the Swiss Army Knife of stoves because it does so many things well...not perfect but as a result of this system's flexibility I would be hard pressed to find myself wanting for another stove unless gourmet cooking or winter adventures are on your list. To quote my 6 year old son, "" That's awesome!!"" Top features: -Ceramic coating on skillet and 2.5L Pot. Absolutely incredible! When will MSR make a pot set for home use?! -Removeable/interchangeable pot/skillet handles. -Lid lock on pot for straining pasta, rice etc. Avoiding steam burns. -Very stable platform for burner & cup/pot/ skillet ... MoreI have owned many MSR Stoves (Pocket Rocket, Reactor, Whisperlite International) and this stove fills a spot in the MSR line-up, for me, that has been missing. Unlike the original Windburner 1L or 1.8L this stove does not have indents that lock the larger pots to the burner. This avoids any injury while trying to fumble with larger capacities of the 2.5 & 4L pots whilst disconnecting from the burner. -Spot on boiling times for the larger capacities. -Regulator. A not often seen feature on MSR canister stoves. This one has it and ensures consistent output at the burner head regardless of fuel levels in the canister. -Radiant burner head. Virtually unaffected by wind and a larger surface area allow for category leading boil times. No need for a windscreen. -If you own other Windburner Cups they will fit. Opportunities for improvement -Skillet does not nest with 2.5L Pot. Perhaps with the 4L. Leaves you with a rather clumsy bag despite the burner/ fuel easily fitting into the 2.5L pot. Potential for unwanted wear & tear on the skillet as a result. If the skillet did nest with the 2.5L pot it would be pretty small. I was able to fit 8"" tortillas in to make quesadillas so the size isn't all bad. -If using a 16 oz fuel canister and the larger pots, the canister was little closer than I liked due to the height.
