Mythos: The Greek Myths Retold by Stephen Fry

Definitely a great read. I whole-heartedly recommend this book on the myths of Greece. However - a Contents would be helpful. And to the publisher - why such a tiny tiny font for the footnotes? The footnotes are interesting and informative, and deserve to be read.

I waded my way throught this book to keep up with my granddaughter who had listened to the audio book and kept quizzing me on my Greek mythology kowledge (non-existant). . It was a chore. Stephen Fry demystifies the Greek myths and, as a result, I think, strips the tales of their magic. He is undoubtedly very knowledgeable and he wastes no time in displaying this. The footnotes are often patronising. It is like reading a sixth former's examination answer when asked to sum up the various Greek myths.

I am certainly not a Classical scholar yet I found Mythos surprisingly easy and enjoyable to read even though I will always struggle to remember many of the names of the Ancient Gods and lesser deities involved. Mr Fry's sense of humour shines through and breathes life into these ancient myths while remaining true to the key themes of the originals.

An exciting telling of ancient Greek mythology

I am not tutored in Greek mythology or for that matter any of the more classical studies, but I found Stephen fry's 'Mythos' extremely easy to follow along with. Stephen tells the story of the creation of the titans and their jealous rivalries and the birth of the gods in his own unique and special jovial way. I am only a quarter of the way in to this book but I would recommend this book to anyone with a love of fantasy or simply an interest in Greek mythology.

Classic Twist

This fun book was recommended to me by a classics scholar as a gift for granddaughter's partner. It was a huge success. Stephen Fry's wit and humour shines through and you didn't have to have a classical background to enjoy it. Bits were read out over the Christmas lunch table.

Delicious book

The book is of good quality, was delivered fast. The stories are absolutely delicious, very easy to read and understand despite the fact that they are full of information and Greek names. They are also funny, considering that most of the myths are absurd, the author is not shy in pointing it out.

Mythology for the uninitiated

Loved it. As someone who doesn't know much about Greek mythology, this was an easily digestible way to learn. Fry's writing style keeps you engaged, and prevents the topic feeling dry. Definitely worth a read - you won't want to put it down.

Really good read

I really enjoyed reading this book. Its light and funny but gives you a really great overview of the Greek mythology. I enjoyed Stephens writing style and even tho i struggled to keep track of who's who, I can't wait to read the next one!

The Best Greek Mythology Book I've Read

The best of Fry's books, a labor of love. This is the mythology book I'll give the young ones in my family. Accessible, entertaining, humorous and informative. I wish it'd been around when I was slogging through the classics in high school and college, it would have made the experience much more enjoyable.

The Gods would smile too

Mr Fry has written this as he speaks with pithy comments and interesting asides with a solid leavening of humour. We were travelling through Europe and onto Athens. Going through the musem and to sites of interest some passing ability to explain the pantheon of Greek Gods was needed. Thoroughly enjoyed the read.
