Nest Protect Smoke Alarm (Wired)
This Nest Protect wired smoke alarm has advanced technologies to communicate with you when it detects smoke or carbon monoxide whether you're home or not. Voice alerts quickly advise of an issue and it has Bluetooth LE so you can silence the alarm via the Nest app on your phone if you've accidentally burnt something in the kitchen. Nest Protect sends you phone alerts when you're not home to tell you what's wrong and in what room, it has a Split-Spectrum Sensor to detect smoke from both fast-burning and smouldering fires, tests its sensors repeatedly, and is the first alarm to use Sound Check to quietly test its speaker and siren once a month. Plus, Nest Protect has a carbon monoxide sensor that lasts for up to a decade. Nest Protect doubles as a night light with a green ring when it's lights-out time. If your current smoke alarm connects to wires then Nest Protect (Mains Connected 240 V) is the one for you. Simply download the free Nest app on your compatible Android or iOS phone to get started.

I replaced a battery powered CO detector and a nearby hard wired smoke detector with this. I consider the Nest Protect a substantial upgrade over my existing detectors. No more chirps at 2 AM to replace the back up battery in the smoke detector, and twice the lifespan (10 years vs 5), on the CO detector are two that come to mind. I also like that I can be alerted while away from the house if either detector is activated. Finally, the motion activated night light is a nice touch. The installation could not have been easier taking about 15 minutes start to finish. I have eight more hardwired smoke detectors required by local codes. My plan is to replace the rest a few at a time until done.

Bought this for an office that did not have a fire/smoke alarm. We have a combination of wired and battery nest alarms throughout the rest of the house and of course the only room that didn't have one (not code required) was a home office where it happened that a back-up battery shorted out somehow and started smoking in the middle of the night. The other nearest alarm eventually went off in the next room. Since all alarms are linked and the system announces where the fire/smoke was detected I was easily and quickly able to find the backup battery and throw it out the front door to minimize the smoke in the house . . . fortunately no damage aside from electrical smoke for a few hours . . .

After spending a bunch of time on a customer service chat, I finally figured out that Nest Protect doesn't work with Google Home. You have to use the Nest App (which isn't really Google but kind of is Google). Integration of Nest Protect into Google Home has promised for years, and it still doesn't work. I found this out the hard way after investing in a few Google Nest cameras and subscribing to Nest Aware. My intention was to set up an integrated smart home solution that all worked together. There are even independent articles that show up on the first page of a Google search that claim Nest Protect can be used through Google Home and even tell you a way to do it--that doesn't actually work. Did you know that after 10 years, a smoke/CO alarm becomes less and less reliable and viable and should be replaced? I didn't. My old Nest Protects did and they told me so. I like that sort of info as opposed to an alarm that just starts beeping for no reason and makes you guess why. My Nest app not only notified me but it gave me an explanation why with valuable information. This is yet one of the reasons I decided to not only stick with the platform and replace them but also to buy an additional unit for the basement. I like how they're all integrated and aware of each other so the alarms all go off but announce where the issue is. I have one hardwired and two battery units; one for each floor. I don't like how they aren't supported in the new Works with Google program but I'm hoping they'll be moved over soon. Until then, they live in the limbo between the Nest app and the Google Home app, but I'll trade that for the moment for the feeling of security I get and the ease of dealing with them. No false alarms, no going off when you burn toast. That included 'night light mode' that not only goes off when you're walking around in the dark but also guides you in case of smoke! One note: if you're still running a 1st gen Protect, be aware that the mounting system and wiring harness have changed. Minor inconvenience, but it's not a direct replacement.
Expensive but great features to try out. The motion night light and automatic tests are a great feature. If you install this in your bedroom the night light can be a annoying for fussy sleepers, but could be great for parents or kids.Sadly the Google Home and Nest app situation is still horrible. One of the features in regards to recording when the alarm goes looks to be limited to older Nest cameras still in the home app. Newer cameras in the Home app might not record. When buying this, consider going in store to purchase it. The expiry dates as per other reviewers say most are built between 2017-2019. The 2017-2019 ones do not have any indication of the date they were built on the outside of the box. I ordered 2x hardwired and was sent 1x battery and 1x hardwired.
The Nest Protect 2nd generation Smoke and CO2 is better than most smoke detectors. It is a good product and works as advertised with one exception which is why I didnāt give 5 stars. The Wifi is a bit buggy still with these detectors. I have 9 of them installed in my home and frequently 1, 2 or 3 of them will go offline on their 30 min checkin with the router. They often come back online on their own and it can be any one of the 9 at any time. Google Tech Support was not useful at all. I tried various solutions on my own such as assigning static IPs, or binding to a particularly close node or extender with no satisfaction. I eventually added a 3rd node to my ASUS router Mesh network and this seems to have solved the problem but had to discover this on my own. I eventually added a 3rd node to my ASUS router Mesh network and this seems to have solved the problem but had to discover this on my own. It appears the detectors are sensitive to how many other devices are active at the time of checkin and if they donāt get an immediate response go offline until the next checkin. The good news though is the detector going offline does not affect its functioning at all for smoke or CO2 detection or itās communication with other detectors, only communication with the NEST app and there is a solution by balancing out the traffic with an additional node or extender if you have a lot of these. I recommend them but beware this annoying issue.
We have several of these units in our home and are generally very happy with them. The night light feature is unexpectedly very helpful. We look forward to Matter support coming to this family of products, whiuch would make them much more attractive. HOWEVER: Google needs to provide better support and access to spare parts. There are three items that are easily worn out or damaged, especially if you move a unit for any reason and it needs to be possible to get replacements from the Google store. Please make these available ASAP. 1. The mounting bracket. 2. The electrical connector (for wired units). 3. The batteries. It is very frustrating to have a DIY installable device without some assurance of part availability.
Once connected a breeze. Installation on iOS not so easy when you already have a Nest thermostat. When you have a Nest thermostat, uninstall this first then install the Protects. When everything is working add back the nest thermostat. If you donāt want monthly automatic tests then turn this feature off. You will also have to turn on the override from app for the alarm, otherwise it defaults to having to push the button on the Protect. Great feature is that you can set the AC to go off automatically in case of excessive smoke or fire. Not sure why google doesnāt have Appleās convenience for setup.

The Nest smoke detector was an easy replacement for my existing wired smoke detectors and look great as well. Before installing turn off the power at the breaker panel and use and make sure you have a meter or other device to verify no voltage before starting the installation. I followed the directions step-by-step and the installation went exactly as it was supposed to. I already hade a Nest thermostat and doorbell cam so I was familiar with the app and the smoke detector show up right away in the process. The testing gives you a voice warning as well as both the alarms for smoke and carbon monoxide snd were plenty loud enough. This is in a small hallway outside two bedrooms and a guest bathroom and makes it nice if someone gets up in the middle of the night. With it being outside the bathroom there is also a test to make sue steam doesnāt set the smoke detector off. Ours did not.
