A Really Bad Router

DOES WORK WITH CENTURYLINK if less than 10mbps...

There are a lot of reviews stating that this router does not work with Centurylink DSL....this is only true if you have speeds above 10mbps. This product fits a niche nicely for those of us that can not get a faster connection but that are tired of using the terrible quality devices provided from our ISP. The big thing is make sure you contact customer service through centurylink and get your PPP USERNAME AND ACCOUNT PASSWORD. The info is not available without contacting a customer service rep through either a phone call or via their technical service chat. Having my PPP user name and account password was all that was needed to put into the routers interface and I was up and working within ten minutes, and the connection to centurylink is now slightly faster than it ... MoreThere are a lot of reviews stating that this router does not work with Centurylink DSL....this is only true if you have speeds above 10mbps. If your DSL is giving you issues then have centurylink send a technician to measure the signal strength up to the box mounted outside of your home. This is completely free of charge (has been for me anyways the past six times I had centurylink come out and measure until I found the issue inside my home). If the technician confirms the signal strength measures to what you are paying for then ask the technican to connect your box wiring DIRECTLY to the wiring from the provider....no jumpers in-between or splices. If then you still have an issue, the it IS with your phone wiring inside your home that you will need to fix on your own or find someone that can. I finally pulled out all of the old phone wiring from my home and ran a line directly out of the box into the router....completely fixed all the interference issues I was having and have had a stable connection for months that has not dropped out any.

Before this was connected, the internet was completely fine. My ping on Fortnite was fairly low, the connection was stable. However, the range wasn’t as good. The original Optus modem still could reach the whole house and still provide a steady signal and I thought the Netgear could only improve it... it didn’t. As a gamer, I need a strong steady signal to play games. The Netgear has only made it worse, making the UPnP unsuccessful and NAT type strict on my xbox. I have contacted both xbox and netgear to sort out these problems but the solutions have had zero positive outcomes. Must have for centurylink

If you have Centurylink "high speed internet" but are using their router you need to get this. The router they provide is not worth using anymore than the length of time it takes for this ship then throw that thing like a frizbee off a 3rd story balcony. using their router if you are trying to watch a video forget about HD. you'll have to go down to 360p if you don't want buffering and even then you'll still get it, if you hard wire your computer you get 480p...maybe. if you have anything else connected loading a webpage will take a solid minute. if your trying to get anything serious done you'll want to put your head through a wall. now plug this bad boy in and it's night and day. with just wifi I can once again watch a video if glorious 1080p with no buffering ... MoreIf you have Centurylink "high speed internet" but are using their router you need to get this. Netgear Nighthawk D7000 unstable and unreliable

I had to return it after two months and after receiving a replacement unit because of consistent internet disconnections.Initially, it worked well but after a few weeks the unit would drop connection randomly to all of our wireless devices and required reboots to reconnect. Connection would only last a few hours and sometimes only 15 minutes. Internet or service provider fault was ruled out.As per Netgear's recommendations we made sure the Nighthawk had the latest firmware update and tried several hard resets. This was a real pain as our wireless printers also needed to be completely reinstalled with each hard reset. This did not resolve the problem as the disconnections started again before long.Researched for a solution online and found that random disconnections that require rebooting is a well documented problem with this Nighthawk modem/router. There are multiple threads in the Netgear forum set up for this issue and you will find enough people talking about the problem on productreview.com.au, amazon, and on this officeworks review site to be weary as a buyer. Netgear's firmware update and hardreset recommendations did not help the vast majority with this problem from what I read. thatTook the first model back to Officeworks and received an exchange unit.Unfortunately, exactly the same thing happened after a couple weeks. When it works the speed is good but speed means nothing if the unit is unstable and unreliable.I just want to say thanks to the Officeworks team at Garden City, Mt Gravatt for their understanding and giving me a full refund.I opted for an Asus dsl-ac68u. Too early to tell how it compares but after a few days of use I can say it's has a stable and reliable connection

Then I called again technical support from Arlo and I was told on of the port is not open from my Router so they transferred me to Router dept. for them to open and I supplied the info, good I take note the info since Irene from Arlo Netgear frogot to document all the details and the painful mistake she forgot to provide one of the important info( Service type) I was talking to this girl for 54 mins. Lyca from Router dept. help me open but not completely since Irene forgot to provide me the ST to pick. then back to Arlo then when i verified with Arlo staff and apply the changes my internal IP adress is incomplete so the changes did not took place so AGAIN they transfer me to Router dept. since Arlo can't touch the Router so I started 10:05 pm talking to Netgear between Arlo and Router netgear just for today and now Its 3:20am I don't recommend to buy this unless your up to a challenge BIG time. I was told by Netgear router to contact my internet provider COX to open port 433 and 80 so Arlo Netgear and Netgear AC1900 will work and Arlo will work. NOW its 3:12 AM Arlo still not working. Ill call Cox Monday gree. Very disappointing!!!! IF this will not work monday I will return this Router so much stress and pain.

After reading various blogs, etc I discovered I needed to look through Netgear's program and find 'Advanced Settings' then change 2-3 setting types to 'Automatically Detect' as well as change the MAC address. Once I had done this my connection worked with no issues. I'm not sure if everyone runs into the same issue or if that was just me but be prepared to change some settings if you get this modem. Chances are if you are buying this modem you are already a bit tech savvy however if you are not you may end up becoming frustrated until someone can help you. Apart from the setup issue, I think this is an excellent modem for a reasonable price.

Salvation using Quirky A1 kit...

This is a great bit of kit and I am very pleased with it. I had problems with the generic basic modem routers sent by my ISP so looked into options from there. This design is a bit quirky but works so well. I used this with a plug in Netgear MESH extender for upstairs. Together it makes a great setup and sorted the drops and bottlenecks I was getting continuously I used a free online meter (Netspot) to review the % of signal received with the old router, the new router they had sent me, and this router (in various positions too). This router, for my set up, improved my received wifi by about 15% of available signal, plus working on dual band ac. Also, I suspect my overall download capability via copper is improved too from my speed tests with ADSL / ADSL2 / ADSL2+ / ... MoreThis is a great bit of kit and I am very pleased with it. Also, I suspect my overall download capability via copper is improved too from my speed tests with ADSL / ADSL2 / ADSL2+ / VDSL modes I was able to use this as a trusted quality item with a decent quantity of reviews available against so many alternatives on the market to sort out the issues I was having. When It Is Connected, It's great.
2 February 2018

I initially had problems staying connected to the net with this router/modem, and had to seek assistance from the Netgear technical people. She was able to update the firmware (which I had been unable to do) and since that time (maybe two weeks ago) it has lost the connection less than a handful of times. When I am connected it works great. It has an added bonus of two USB ports into which I have plugged my printer and a backup drive. Before, my printer was plugged into my wife's desktop and when it was not in operation I could not print from my computer. That is no longer a problem as it allows my computer to print even when hers is off. It also enables me to print from my iPhone, which I was unable to do before. I have updated the firmware again and things seem to ... MoreI initially had problems staying connected to the net with this router/modem, and had to seek assistance from the Netgear technical people. I have updated the firmware again and things seem to be improving with the connectivity issue. It has been several days now since it last lost connection. I might add that regaining the connection is just a matter of rebooting the router/modem, but it is not something that you want to be doing more than once every six months or so. Hopefully, I am on my way to smooth sailing now. If not, I'll be back in touch with the Netgear technical support people. The one who helped me seemed very knowledgeable, helpful, and was most patient and respectful with me.
