Best router I've ever owned

Full disclosure: I bought this 2 years ago and waited to review until now. I spent a couple months researching mesh systems, reading tech reviews and consumer reviews. My previous system was an aged Nighthawk with an even more aged hard wired Netgear router setup as an extender. I addition I had a Bitdefender Box II to cover security for the entire network. There were areas in my home with weak signals and because of the age of the equipment I frequently had to reboot everything. Even in it's newer days that setup still left something to be desired. The Orbi setup was ridiculously easy and because of the built in Armor security I was able to do away with the Bitdefender Box. The performance has been consistently outstanding. I couldn't be more pleased.

This was so easy to setup, someone who has never setup a wireless network before should have no problem following the on-screen prompts to connect everything and finalize the wireless network. My house is about 2400 square feet and a 1 story so it’s more spread out, but this system covers the entire house (including the garage). I was regularly seeing speeds of 220+ Mbps which was most likely limited by my internet service provider and not the Wi-Fi connection itself. The system has 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz connections plus the ability to enable a guest network which allows anything sensitive you have connected to your main networks to be kept separate from those on your guest network. Overall, I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who needs a lot of coverage area throughout their house without significantly impacting the upload/download data rates. If you consider the price of the Google Nest mesh system for a similar coverage size, the Orbi is about $80 cheaper and still has great internet speed. I received this product as a participant in NETGEAR’s First Look Review Program and am very excited I did as it is a great product which is easy to operate/setup.

We have no problems (well two actually) with our devices: one old iMac hard wired to the base, a hub for a laptop hard wired to the base (that’s why I bought the model with 4 hard wired ports available), 2 laptops, 2 iPhones, 1 iPad, a wireless printer (problem 1: the printer & router kept losing the printer’s IP address. A call to HP tech support helped with that), a Firestick in a dumb TV, a Samsung smart TV, a thermostat, and on outdoor smart outlet the turns the fountain on & off. Problem 2 was one Dell laptop would lose WiFi connectivity. The router & laptop we’re losing the IP address. A call to tech support helped that - my wife is not complaining that she lost signal. I’m glad I bought the product. I can sit outside on the patio and not have to worry about getting a signal. My outdoor smart outlet was hard to connect to the old router at it was distant from the router (1 bar signal strength), but now it is near the dining room satellite and it was easy to connect with a 3 bar signal. The outlet only works on 2.4 GHz and the outlet & Orbi figures that out on their own. I’m able to rename all my devices on the app so it’s easy to tell what’s device is connected to which Orbi router or satellite. One thing that odd is the wireless HP printer is physically 10’ from the base router yet it connects to the satellites often and the Firestick is near the living room satellite yet it connects to the farther away upstairs bas router. But our iPhones connect to whichever base or satellite we are closest to at the time and I’ve never had a problem with the phones losing WiFi connectivity.

Good quality Mesh system with solid performance
29 June 2020

I have been using a different, dual band, WiFi Mesh system that struggled with working from home and having a house full of people the whole day. My old system would top out at around 180 Mbps even right next to the main router. What a difference this system makes. On my cellphone I am now seeing 500Mbps plus over WiFi by the Router and will often get 350Mbps plus from either of the Satellites.Administration is a little "interesting" as the App is VERY basic. Any kind of advanced administration must be done in a browser directly to the master router IP Address. Anyone purchasing this system should immediately update the Firmware and then turn on Beamforming, MU-MIMO, and IPv6.Satellite placement is critical to ensuring the best connection throughput and this is particularly the case for the Satellites. Being a Tri-Band system, the Satellite runs through a dedicated 866Mbps link to channel the signal back to the Router and as this is a 5Ghz band the signal can be disrupted by building materials, Fridges and TVs etc. Handy tip: don't put a Satellite behind a TV or fishtank. All in all, this system performs very well and is a good price for the performance.

Maximize the bandwidth you already pay for!
15 August 2020

This truly has improved our Internet issues greatly! Like with many older homes, the problem wasn't that we needed to buy more speed (which the cable company eagerly tried to sell me), the problem was a consistent connection throughout the house best utilizing the speed we already had. Our original cable-company-provided modem and router were not originally installed in the best location (our fault) - lots of walls and ceilings to get through for the signal to reach each room despite being less than 2,000 sq ft. So we disconnected the cable router, replaced it with the Orbi and placed the two satellites strategicall throughout the house. Our ISP plan is 100 Mbps. Before Orbi we were getting 100 near the router, but 50 or less with often dropped connections in other areas of the house. Now with Orbi, we have over 100 throughout the house, upstairs, downstairs with six plus devices all connected including my son gaming. Orbi manages our existing bandwidth so well we finally are getting what we have been paying for all these years! Plus, I love the on/off controls on the app (we already have agreed upon screen time limits, and now I can simply turn any device throughout the house on/off from my app.). the security features (monitoring malware, etc) and Circle parental control look great although I havent fully explored them yet. Set up: it was relatively easy (I never had to call an 800 number or anything), but give yourself a few hours depending on your situation. If you are using Orbi as your first router with a new ISP connection it should be pretty simple. If you, like me, are replacing an existing router, do make sure with any back-up Modem battery to take it out, let it sit a bit, then put it back in after you have disconnected your existing router. Also, regardless of your set-up I would download the Orbi app on your phone first before starting the set-up. All in all, this netgear Orbi is totally worth every penny!

The review of our requirements and the hardware available to service it was very helpful, and resulted in a different purchase (Orbi 3-pack vs. Orbi 2-pack) which has made our network much better.Speed and availability are better than they have ever been, and we have not had to touch the Orbi devices since we installed them. The Orbi devices are large compared to others, but they quickly disappeared behind other decorations. Not an issue. Our requirements included 5 hard-wired devices, and 10 - 12 WiFi devices including an Amazon Fire Cube (suggested by Best Buy consultant and much appreciated.) Applications include two active offices, two televisions, and 5 or more laptops, phones, and tablets, and one gamer :-) All are getting transparent access without issue.Worth the expense, and thank you Best Buy.

New to Home Mesh Wifi
22 June 2019

Our Asus high-speed multi band router with extenders simply was getting overloaded with all our smarthome devices - even with only 2 people at home. I decided on the Orbi RBK20 router + 2 satellite pack after some extensive research on mesh wifi systems. Most of the lower cost systems are dual band and often don't have MU-MIMO whereas the Orbi had multiband and MU-MIMO. Even the in-store Geek Squad tech commented that the Orbi is head and shoulders above everything, including the much praised Velop - in particular he mentioned that the RB20 is easily the better overall product to the more expensive RBK50 set up. Even the in-store Geek Squad tech commented that the Orbi is head and shoulders above everything, including the much praised Velop - in particular he mentioned that the RB20 is easily the better overall product to the more expensive RBK50 set up. Setup was a bit troublesome, and I did end up having to call Netgear support, however as it was later in the evening, the wait time was only a couple of minutes and once I connected with a support tech, I found them to be very helpful. It took us about 40 minutes to get the router and internet access configured which included a reboot of my Fido high-speed modem. After than he even helped me set up the DNS for my VPN services. Once I got the router going, re-connecting all our devices to the new network was a breeze. I only have a couple of Echo Dots to connect now because I decided at 11pm at night to give it a rest. We are in a two-storey home, with the router located in the basement (one of the reasons for poor connectivity across my previous set up with 2 extenders). I have set up one satellite on each of the main and second floors in a zig-zag pattern as suggested by the support tech. I am still futzing a bit with location, but all seems very stable and very fast. The key pros I found with the Orbi include: - single network across the entire environment rather than the multiple networks under a router plus extender setup - excellent signal strength throughout the entire home. - streaming seems more reliable - mobile app - web-based control app much more intuitive and easier to use than previous web-consoles I have used - all 3 units - home router and both satellites, include 2 ethernet ports providing additional device connectivity options if you need them. There are one or two cons, however. - units are larger than other competing products (Velop, Google, etc.) - locating satellites will take some time to get it just right - setup was less intuitive than I would have hoped. I have attached a D-Link 8 port Metal GB switch to the router for all my attached devices (VoIP box, personal cloud drive, etc.) and the entire footprint for these two devices is smaller than the previous footprint of my Asus RT-AC87R router which was one big piece of kit. There are much, much less expensive products available and I was a bit unsure about dropping this much cash on home networking, however, now that it's up and running, I admit to being very happy with the end result. Overall, you'd be very hard pressed to find a home mesh wifi system with this level of features at this price point.

During my testing I tried behind in a utility room on one end of the house and end a far bed room at the other end. Total distance is about 80 feet across the house at those two points.Setup was easy, plug in, and download the app. I used a Samsung S9 phone to complete the setup, it was very simple. It finds the unit and walks you through the steps to setup your network and set passwords, etc. The satellites don't require any setup. They do have a sync button that you can use to re-sync them, but I have not had to.Playing around in the app I was impressed with the amount of configuration options available. The app also has the ability to turn on parental rights, schedule wifi, and a bunch of other features as well. You can also log into the hotspot directly and do more advanced configuration as well. The performance has exceeded my expectations. I am receiving wifi signal in the garage and outside on the driveway, which I didn't have before, even though the AT&T router is only 20 ft from that room. At the other end of the house, my son's wifi has gone from 1 bar to 5 bars and if much faster as well. After using this router for over 3 weeks, my family has been much happier with the signal levels throughout the house.

I am a repeat Orbi customer: I have a 2 piece Orbi system (RBR50 and RBS50) at another house and am very happy with it. For this house I bought the NETGEAR Orbi Whole Home Mesh WiFi System with Tri-band AC2200 WiFi System consisting of 3 pieces (RBR40 plus 2 RBW30 satellites). Like the RBK50, the RBK33 claims 5000 sq. ft. coverage. It was simple to install. The only issue (I wont call it a problem) was finding the optimal outlets in which to plug the satellites. One was easy but the other required trying 8 different outlets and then measuring the signal strength at 6 different spots where people would use a wireless device connected to that satellite. At the RBR40 (router) the speed is 458 down and 27 up. At the final spot where the second RBW30 satellite is ... MoreI am a repeat Orbi customer: I have a 2 piece Orbi system (RBR50 and RBS50) at another house and am very happy with it. At the RBR40 (router) the speed is 458 down and 27 up. At the final spot where the second RBW30 satellite is located the speed is 387/24.I like the compact RBW30 that plugs directly into an outlet compared to the full-size RBS50 that uses a corded plug.Beyond speed capability (2.2gbs vs 3.0gbs), the only possible drawback to the RBK33 versus the RBK50 is the number of ethernet ports for wired connections (3 on both the RBR40 and the RBR50). However, the RBS50 has 4 ports (based on its wireless connection with RBR50) while two RBW30s have none. To handle my wired port needs, I go from the RBR40 to an 8-port switch hub. With my first Orbi (a new install) I had no trouble connecting 2.4GHz WiFi thermostats and light switches. With this second Orbi (replacing a non-mesh router), I will have to take some extra time to move the 2.4GHz devices to the Orbi. Before buying this second Orbi, I reviewed the other mesh systems available and concluded that Orbi is the best for my needs.

Worst Router ever
2 September 2020

I bought this router when I got 10g internet connected to my house. The initial setup was already problematic. I had to call support to get this working and as it turned out they needed to push upgraded firm ware to connect the satellites to the base unit. This should have been my clue to return it, but I did not. Second warning sign is the heavy pushing of the call center rep for an extended service plan. I rejected it because what could go wrong with a $350 router?. And I know now a lot and now I am stuck with this crappy router. In the first couple of weeks once a twice a week, I lost connection to the internet overnight and when I started work in the morning there was no connection to the internet. And I know now a lot and now I am stuck with this crappy router. In the first couple of weeks once a twice a week, I lost connection to the internet overnight and when I started work in the morning there was no connection to the internet. Luckily this is before my wife woke up who already complained I spent to much on a router but after a reboot everything was fixedNow it even loses connection during the day, especially between 800 and 900 am my Orbi router decides to lose the connection to the modem. I immediately switch to my trusted Airport and which is connected to the same modem and continue to work. After about 15 minutes the demented Orbi router decides it wants to play again and without manual interference it connects to the internet again. This is unacceptable especially if you are in calls and it is unacceptable for a router of this price. And this has nothing to do with distance. A satellite is on my desk 1 feet away from my laptop and the base unit is on the same level in the house 25 feet removed from the satellite unit. (I measured it).So save yourselves the frustration and your money and do not buy this system, unless you are looking for decorative items because I have to admit they are esthetically pleasing.
