Neumann U87 Ai - Black

For over five decades, the Neumann U 87 Ai has stood as the undisputed king of studio microphones, shaping the sound of countless hit records since its introduction in 1967. This legendary large diaphragm condenser microphone has become the gold standard against which all other studio mics are measured, with its iconic tapered body and distinctive headgrille design instantly recognisable in professional recording environments worldwide. The U 87 Ai's reputation extends beyond the recording studio - radio DJs have relied on its pristine sound quality for decades, making it as much a part of broadcast history as it is recording history. What makes the U 87 Ai truly exceptional is its remarkable balance of technical precision and musical character. Built around the same dual diaphragm condenser capsule design as its legendary predecessor, the U 67, the microphone features a sophisticated FET circuit with minimal signal path and transformer balanced output. This engineering approach results in remarkably flat on-axis frequency response while maintaining the distinctive sonic charisma that makes vocals and speech sound naturally present and engaging. The three selectable polar patterns, combined with pad and low cut options, provide remarkable versatility for any recording situation. The U 87 Ai excels across a broad spectrum of applications, from its primary role as the ultimate vocal microphone to its effectiveness on acoustic instruments, drum overheads, and amplifier cabinets. Its balanced bass response and exceptional midrange detail make it equally at home capturing the nuances of a classical cello soloist or the power of a guitar amplifier. Many engineers consider a stereo pair of U 87 Ais their first choice for piano recording across all genres, while its natural sound reproduction makes it indispensable for voice-over work, dubbing, and audiobook production.
