Do you have a sony crop sensor? Forget carl zeiss 50mm 1.4. Get this. Image quality identical. Only difference is 3/4 stop in apeture which is indescernable. Same angle of view as cz 50mm on full frame. Beautiful sharpness, bokeh and saturation. Most of the shots take my breath away. Better than my sony 16-50 2.8 in picture quality. Just dont drop it. What a gem thank you sony

I've had this lens now for a few weeks. I've put this lens through it's paces. I wasn't expecting a lot from the lens considering the low price. I was WRONG! This lens is EXCELLENT in low light. When I say low light, I mean outside dark with a tiki torch burning can appear daylight with very little noise. A quick stop in post I have some great photos. This will surely be my walking around lens as it can do it all. Stop it down and you get really nice, sharp images. Open it wide up and you have some beautiful bokeh.

For the price, this lens is excellent. I bought mine second hand and it arrived in near mint condition. The body is plastic but still durable and makes the lens very light. The glass takes great photos and the f1.8 aperture is quick. I've also found the SAM on this lens is quick as well. For comparison, I own a 24mm Zeiss and while this lens is not as good as the Zeiss, the difference isn't that great and the Zeiss is a lot more expensive. All up, it's a great lens that gives you a lot for the money, that I love to shoot with and don't plan on selling.

It is as light as a Dixie cup but despite its plastic construction it has held up remarkably well for 10 years. I find myself using more versatile zoom lenses more often but for the times you need a short controlled depth of field this lens delivers. It won't give you the dreamy look of an f/1/4 Rokkor from days of yore but defocuses backgrounds a lot better than most variable aperture zooms ever could at 35mm. As a for instance, Sony's 18-250mm superzoom is at f/4.5 at 35mm and even constant aperture f/2.8 zooms are a stop-and-a-half slower. Also, that wide aperture and light weight make it easier to shoot handheld in dim conditions, You won't confuse this lens or ... The camera has multiple components to choose from for full utility of the camera. It is very light, takes really crisp outside photos, terrific panoramas and easy snap and shoot. I have used the movie feature, but haven't downloaded it to see how it came out. My only criticism is with lens. I would like to see other lenses fit on the camera like my Canon.

I used no flash at all for one venue and an external flash for the second, extremely low lit hall. This lens did fantastic in both situations. Sony has done a remarkable job with their low cost primes by focusing on what's most important (optics) and spending a little less on housing. This lens is not the best build, but it is built well. It's not a metal housing, but neither does it have a $1000+ price tag. Although, I would put its optics up against the more expensive primes. I want to comment on the angle, as well. Check 'Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX Lens' here at B&H: it has metal mount, no moving parts outside - this feature alone protects your investment not pumping air/dust inside the lens during focusing movements. It has *wave* motor which is fast, quiet, precise and allows you manually adjust the focusing not even using the AF/MF switch. To compare it against the Sony's, this one has two more optical elements, so being more complex thus more expensive in production it costs -10% less and delivers pretty same image quality, except maybe bokeh, Sony's bokeh looks slightly better.Conclusion: this lens is a must for Sony users, get one! It is good and there is no better choice in this price range for Sony. p.s. You might get impression that my review for this lens seems to be rather negative. Well, I'm trying to be honest. It is good to be informed. I'm Sony Alpha user, but sometime I'm looking at Nikon lenses and regretting that I didn't choose Nikon at my beginning.
