I am a young but experienced birder, and after almost three months of researching I thought that the Monarch ATB 8X42 binoculars would be my best choice as a B-day gift. I was right. The Monarchs, award-winning, best-selling binoculars live up to what people say about them. Images are sharp and bright, even in cloudy days and dusk and dawn. I could see almost every detail of a yellow-rumped warbler way up in an oak tree. Chickadees, nuthatches and woodpeckers at my feeders looked so detailed I felt I could almost touch them. I could see the primaries of a very distant red-tail hawk with amazing brightness, and every hair in a white-tailed deer's gentle head. They work well with eyeglasses and, apart from all the normal little adjusting you have to do with all binoculars (Diopter adjustment: close your right eye while looking through the binocs, then turn the focus wheel until you get the sharpest image, then close your left eye and open your right one. Turn the adjustment wheel under the eyecup until you get the sharpest image, and open both eyes. The image will be sharper on both sides. Remember to extend or retract both barrels to remove the black circles around the sides--sometimes twisting up the eyecup for eyeglasses will help)are a joy to use (that parentheses was much too big). I recommend these for both backyard birders and jungle-walkers. In conclusion, if you're a birder on budget and want some really nice binoculars for a great price, these will certainly do.

I bought two pairs of these binoculars and gave one to my wife. We are avid birders and I take this to the extreme. That's why I got them in 8x42. I feel that these Monarchs are very bright and clear and certainly perform well in the worst of weather to include heavy rain. Over the past year these binos (my pair) have been used by several other people besides myself and have withstood the use/abuse very well. I like the fact that when the eye cups are extended they stay extended and do not creep down. Some folks do not like the objective lens coverings but I find them to be fine, in fact, handy. And I'm a nut for keeping my lens protected. I strongly recommend the Nikon Monarchs for everything from heavy duty birding to casual viewing. It's highly likely that my next pair of 10x42s will be Monarchs.

I decided that I needed to upgrade my binoculars to ones that were lightweight, waterproof and shockproof. Saltwater and bouncing around in my boat ruined a pair of non-waterproof binoculars that I owned. After looking and all of the options, I chose to buy the Nikon 8X42 Monarchs and I made the right decision. These binoculars, while not the usual marine 7x50, work great for my use on the water and they also performed great at a recent ballgame that I attended. These are lightweight, reasonably small, easy to focus, bright, and image clarity is so much better than anything that I've previously owned. I highly recommend these binoculars. I also bought a pair of Nikon ProStaff 9x25 waterproof binoculars as I wanted a second pair of small binoculars to take with me ... MoreI decided that I needed to upgrade my binoculars to ones that were lightweight, waterproof and shockproof. These were bought to give my back yard birding the same performance boost the Monarch 5 10x42's had given my long-distance birding. They allow me to quickly acquire the bird I'm looking at due to the wider field of view. Nikon has packed performance into the Monarch 5 line that rivals other brands at twice their price. Sure, they cannot compare with a $2,000 + pair but for the serious binocular user on a budget these are a great choice. I'd go so far as to say most people would not be able to tell the difference. Good low light performance and edge to edge clarity make these a big step up from the lower priced options. They are easy to use with medium fast focusing. Mid-weight so I haven't noted them as uncomfortable to carry, All-in-all, a great product that has ... MoreThese were bought to give my back yard birding the same performance boost the Monarch 5 10x42's had given my long-distance birding. I got these for my wife so she could see what I was looking at while photographing birds. It changed everything! Rather than being rather frustrated at having to wait around while I'm shooting, she now sees and is able to participate in what I'm doing. The Monarch 5 Binoculars are clear, bright, and sharp. They're easy to adjust and focus. The lens caps are attached to the neck strap so she doesn't worry about loosing them. They're not the highest end binoculars, but not the lowest either. She's now very excited to be out with me when I'm doing my photography thing. They're really quite good!
I am an experienced birder. I bought these binoculars for my wife and as a back-up to my aging but still excellent Zeiss Dialyt 7x42 binoculars. As of this writing I have only had the Nikon Monarch 5 binocs for 1 week, but so far I am very impressed. The image quality is excellent - exceptionally sharp as other reviewers have noted. The focus mechanism is smooth and very sensitive. My wife and I both wear eyeglasses, so the long eye relief is a great plus. I have put the close focusing to the test, and it is working to about 8 ft as advertised. The low light performance of the Monarch 5s is not as good as my Zeiss, and their field of view is much narrower (partly because they are 8x vs. 7x, but I noted from some professional reviews that the Monarch 5s have narrower ... MoreI am an experienced birder. The low light performance of the Monarch 5s is not as good as my Zeiss, and their field of view is much narrower (partly because they are 8x vs. 7x, but I noted from some professional reviews that the Monarch 5s have narrower FOV than some other popular 8x binocs). The image quality outweighs this IMO. The Monarchs are relatively light-weight and compact, so I have had no problem hiking and snowshoeing with them. Btw they work fine in cold weather. Overall I am very pleased with the Nikon Monarch 5 8x42 binocs, which at ~($) deliver image quality that I would expect in a much more expensive binocular. I would recommend them to anyone who wants a superior set of mid-price-range binoculars.
I'm very happy with these binoculars. I will admit that I am not well versed in binoculars. I bought these sight unseen, just trusting reviews. I considered the Nikon Prostaff or Monarch 3 but since I could not see any of them in person, I went with the more highly regarded model.Things I noticed after a few days of real use compared to shortcomings of my old binos:Clear view right out to the edges. No lens flare when the sun is in front of me.No chromatic aberration when subject is back-lit.No distracting reflections from nearby lights when used at night.Brighter under low light conditions. Actually, brighter all the time, a much cleaner view, easier to see details.Like others, I was not thrilled with the lens caps. Actually, brighter all the time, a much cleaner view, easier to see details.Like others, I was not thrilled with the lens caps. They are handy, but I was used to taking off my caps and throwing them in my bag. Now I have caps hanging. I got used to it though and now like them. If you need the eye piece caps to stay on more securely in your bag, wrap the strap around them and the hinge, then squeeze the bino halves tighter together to trap the strap. The big question on everyone's mind... 8x or 10x?? Well, I wanted two pairs so I got one of each. I got 10x for backyard use and 8x for outings, including rowboat fishing. With both powers in hand, it's still impossible to choose. The 10x are very slightly less bright. It is noticeable at dusk when switching back and forth, but not really a significant difference. Both are still brighter than my old binos. The 10x's lesser field of view does not bother me, no issues for me scanning the tree line for wildlife. The image is bigger with the 10x, but with slightly more shake on the 10x, it's a wash compared to the 8x to discern fine details in most situations. The 10x will give you a small advantage in identifying a distant animal, but handheld, neither pair will be better at confirming what is in his mouth. Discerning those fine details just becomes a wash because of shake. Same for reading distant signs, I lose the ability to read them at the same distance with either power. You won't regret either power, but I think if I could only keep one pair it would be the 8x since I have some boat use. Both work well with my eye glasses, although I still prefer to lift my glasses. If you will be using from a boat, definitely get the 8x. Otherwise, its your choice. If you are really agonizing, get the 8x. No downside at all to choosing 8x. I am happy with my choice of 10x for land use and 8x for use on water.
I'm pretty rough with my gear. Hunt rough terrain and have always made do with cheaper gear. I have wrecked 5 sets over the years. Prisms come loose ie, double images, water fogs some up and 1 set grew fungus on the lenses! These new glasses are great for spotting deer, pigs, thar and chamois in poor light conditions. They can handle rain, mist, sweat, blood, dust and the odd little bump inevitably encountered as the rough stuff is traversed. Spotted the odd animal in fading light that my old 7x50 Tasco's, that my son was using, couldn't pick up. Only thing I don't like is the lack of fine focussing adjustment. Been on 20 odd hunts and are still good as new - touch wood!
My Nikon Monarch 8x42 ATB arrived today and I gave it an immediate field test on some deer and songbirds in the field behind our home. The view is crisp, sharp and bright, with good contrast. The body is solidly built with a good balance and the focusing control is very smooth. I find the diopter adjusting ring rather tight, which makes adjusting a bit difficult, but that also helps to keep the adjustment from being accidentally changed. Some others have complained about the lens caps being of lesser quality than the binoculars, but my experience with expensive cameras and binoculars has shown that other units costing thousands have caps that are no better than the ones supplied with the Nikon ATB. I would refer my friends to this site if they ever are looking for a good price on quality optics. Best regards, Bill Hoffman
I love these binoculars. I went from super cheap binoculars and nearly quitting on birding to one who can see color and fine details easily. Send that is what a birder needs to tell the difference between a thrush and an oven bird or a crow or a raven. I’m even able to see some blue in an indigo bunting when the sun is behind them. I’m kind of a bird nut, water birds, birds In the woods and backyard birds too. Totally worth the price and I can’t imagine needing anything more for my purposes. So if there are better binoculars out there I imagine they could only be required but only by professionals.
