I am a novice when it comes to using nice binoculars. No one in my family has spent as much as I did on these but I do not regret my purchase at all. I wanted a nicer set but nothing to expensive as I intended on taking them on my kayak in the California coastline. I found them heavy at first on my local day hikes but I took them kayaking on my camping trip to Santa Cruz island and found the extra weight helped me keep them stable when I was on the water. I was able to see a great white shark eat some kind of shorebird in the distance with these!!! I use binoculars for monitoring archery arrow shots on the target. 8X is about the maximum magnification for hand held use. 42mm objective lenses gather enough light to make these binoculars useful in dimming light. The binoculars are sturdily made, easy to focus and come with a neck strap and a padded case. The binoculars are a bit on the heavy side for a long day in the field. More expensive binoculars may have a marginally brighter and sharper image but these Nikons are a good value.

This is actually my first review... of anything. I took these to Honduras to look at some property. It performed well under tropical conditions. Thought I might use it for sports, hiking or hunting later. They seem pretty tough and if I loose them or damage them, they are affordable enough to replace.

I am a novice birder and these binoculars were recommended by several online sites. I like them except for the flimsy plastic covers for the lenses and eye pieces. Good instructions on line are available for actually focusing the binoculars. The accompanying instruction manual was not very helpful.
Bought these for bird watching. Great clarity, even in not ideal lighting. I especially appreciate how great they work while wearing my glasses. The strap seems a bit cheap and is uncomfortable but I still give them 5 stars because I love how well they work.
I'd planned to buy Nikon Monarch 5s but the Prostaffs felt more comfortable and they were considerably less expensive. I used them for wildlife viewing and I was quite happy with them. I am not a birder or serious user but for my purposes they worked well. They were easy to adjust and I like the screw open eye piece adjustment.What I don't like are the lens caps. They are designed to clip on the strap but they don't stay on at all. I spent a fair bit of time hunting for lens caps that repeatedly fell off the strap and they don't seem to fit that securely on the lenses either. The monarchs have attached and beefier lens caps. It seems like a poor cost saving measure by Nikon on the Prostaff.My one other ding on these it that the warranty on Nikons was shorter ... I use these binoculars everyday for birding. Pros: lightweight, work great in low-light conditions, adjustable eyecups mean they work well even if you wear glasses. Cons: The objective lens caps are a little awkward to use. Overall, I love this pair of binoculars and highly recommend them.
So happy with this purchase. After researching the different binoculars out there I decided on the Nikon ProStaff for my husband's retirement gift since he recently took up bird watching. I fully expected him to not be happy with whatever I purchased because he has corrective lenses and it has been difficult to find a pair he can see clearly with but to my surprise this pair has worked out perfectly. They are light weight and have the clearest vision.
I bought the 8x42 versions of the Nikon Prostaff 7S, Nikon Prostaff 3S, Vortex Diamondback HD, and Carson VP. All of them are popular recommended choices. Prostaff 7S is easily the winner. The 3S was nice, but the increase in optical quality/clarity/depth of the 7S is well worth the increase in cost, weight and length.The others had good optical quality, but the Carsons were very heavy and also had play in the focus knob (online reviews indicated this may be a product-wide issue), and the Vortex design was awkward and unpleasant in the hand (too many angled edges). I've had many binoculars over the years for birding. I find these to be my favorite. When I spot a bird, and lift the binocs to my eyes, the bird is right where I expected it be. That is wonderful and not my common experience with other products. I use them with the harness and they are very comfortable. Great price, too!
