I own a few other brands of binoculars. I use them casually when I watch sporting events as a fan. But most importantly, I use them professionally when I am a spotter and PA Announcer at sporting events. The image from these glasses are very sharp. Very easy to focus. I always wanted a pair of sturdy and and functional pair of binoculars and found them in these pair. A friend of mine has the same type and brand in the 7x35. Didn't think it would make a difference in the 8x40 but it did. I am definitely sold on these binoculars. They are my favorite of the many different ones I own.

I wanted a affordable pair of binoculars to watch the wildlife from my home. These work just fine. The image quality is very, very good. They are advertised as water proof and fog proof, but time will tell. The only small issue I found with them is that the ocular adjustment on the right eye lens is very, very stiff. This might actually be a good thing in the long term, since it won't easily be turned out of focus. But I was surprised at how hard it was to turn to get to the correct adjustment for my eyes.

Excellent binoculars
23 October 2020

I use these to look at birds, animals, mountain scenery and whatever else catches my attention on an outing. The optics are terrific, crystal clear and bright. The depth of field makes distant views look like I am there. The wide field of view makes it easy to follow animal and bird movements and just provides a nice, broad picture. I am very pleased with these binoculars and they go everywhere I go out in the wild so I don't miss anything.

GOOD FOR THE PRICE
30 January 2018

I bought these to replace my old Nikon "Action" 8X40CF " binoculars. Though approximately the same size as the older ones, these are a bit heavier. The optics are not as good and I dislike the turn-and-slide rubber eyecups. They turn too easily when putting them up against your face. The diopter control is more difficult to adjust and the markings are barely readable. Also, the carrying case does NOT have a built-in strap, so unless you have a strap attached to the binoculars themselves (which I don't), forget about hanging it over your shoulder. I'm using my old case as it DOES have the strap attached.Overall, they are good for the price. And yes, they are made in China.

Nikon 8x40mm Action Extr. ATB Binoculars
12 October 2014

I've used my Nikon binoculars at football games with every expectation met. I selected this model for its field of view at 1,000 yards. I had used a pair of Bausch & Lomb 8x40mm binoculars for almost 40 years that were excellent for spectator sports, hunting and all other uses. I find my Nikon 8x40mm Action Extreme ATB Binoculars are every bit as good. Images are sharp, crystal clear and free of distortion at the edges. The field of view allows football plays to be observed from tight end to split end including the entire backfield from a distance of some 80 yards up in the stands. Punts and kickoff are easily followed in flight due to the wide field of view. The neck strap is comfortable despite the moderate 30 oz. weight. However, I believe the objective lens covers method of attachment to the strap will eventually cause loss of one or both when traveling on foot with the binoculars slung around ones neck. A second strap for the case would allow the binoculars to be better protected when traveling over rugged terrain. These binoculars are of excellent quality, and I will recommend them to friends.

Perfect for birding

I've been using my 7x50 binocs that I got as a college graduation gift in 1975. I don't think the diopter on the right side worked anymore and they never seemed to focus well. My wife bought a pair of Nikon 10x50, which, although a little more powerful, provide a small field of view. This makes finding and tracking birds more difficult. She wanted me to get a new pair also when she got hers, but I stuck to my old pair I guess for sentimental reasons. I'm glad I waited because I like these 8x40's much better than hers. They provide a wider field of view and they focus crystal clear. Excellent binoculars.

Superb Porro Prism and Excellent Value
8 July 2010

I bought these binoculars to compare to some high quality roof prism binoculars that are highly rated on many websites. I did a comparison between these Nikon Action Extremes and the other 8x42 roof prism binoculars and here are my specific findings: 1) The Nikon Action Extreme 8x40 is extremely bright, which makes viewing an absolute pleasure. The view was noticeably brighter than the roof prisms (which were twice the price). 2) The Nikon Action Extreme focuses reasonably close, but not quite as close as competitive roof prism binoculars. 3) The Nikon Action Extreme is larger/wider than a comparable roof prism. 4) Image quality is outstanding, easily matching (or in some cases even exceeding) more expensive roof prism binocular designs. 5) For further comparison, I ... MoreI bought these binoculars to compare to some high quality roof prism binoculars that are highly rated on many websites. The Nikon Action Extreme 8x40 is, quite simply, a superb value. The other porro that should probably be considered in this price range is the Leupold Yosemite. Ultimately, I rated the roof prisms (which again, were twice the price) as being slightly better with a wider field of view and better contrast. I also appreciated the smaller width. But with crowd-pleasing image brightness and a great in-hand feel, these Nikon Action Extreme 8x40s are a safe bet for just about everyone. The width/size may not please some people and it will definitely take up space in a suitcase if you intend to travel with it. I absolutely hate the objective lens covers; you'd think Nikon could have spent a dollar more and gotten covers that fold down and have a retaining loop around the lens body. Focusing is not as quick as with some roof prism binos. These minor concerns (at least for me) are far outweighed by the outstanding image quality of the Nikon, the fogproof/waterproof/nitrogen-filled construction, great eye-relief for eyeglass wearers, and the great in-hand feel. One of the best affordable porro-prism binoculars on the market, as well as being just plain one of the best binoculars around. Very Highly Recommended.

Terrific Binoculars - great value
11 November 2016

I spent quite a bit of time checking out various binoculars. For whatever reason the Porro prism's seem to work best for me and feel better in my hands. These have a great feel to them and are very easy to focus. I carry them in a shoulder bag so the weight is no issue (they are not really that heavy anyways). They also have a great field of view which is important to me as I scan the trees. it was a tossup between a 10 x 50 and the 8 x 40. In the end I felt it by8x40 was best for my application (birding). My only complaint is that the objective covers do not stay attached to the binoculars when I take them off i.e. I have to put them away so that I do not lose them. No doubt there are better binoculars out there, however, I believe you would be hard-pressed to pay 5 times as much and get even 20% better. I think it's a case of diminishing returns. I am completely satisfied with these field glasses.

[Rewarded Review] Medium quality

Optics: No significant chromatic abberation across most of the field. Out of the box collimation is good. Center field clarity is very good; however off-axis is blurry. About 40% (subjective) center area is sharp and usable. Blackout axis is narrow, probably due to the smaller exit pupil, but I have similar binos that don't exhibit this; IPD was set correctly. Generally, image is bright, fairly clear. It's nowhere close to what you'll get from expensive European glass, but then again it's under 200 bucks.Construction: Diopter adjustment is flimsy. Twist out eyecups are innovative, but they feel like they will fall off after a few dozen cycles. Body coating is, well... icky feeling in the hand. Focus knob is sloppy, has a good 30 degrees of backlash.I will use these until the stop working, but I would not buy another pair of Nikons, at least not the consumer grade.B&H: 5 stars for B&H! Fast shipping, and they packed these very well. I will definitely buy from B&H again.
