700-200 FL ED vs 70-200 VR II

Because I own a Z9, a Z6, a D5 and an D810, I debated whether to purchase the new 70-200 Z lens or go with the 700 -200 FL ED version as I was looking to upgrade from the older 70-200 ED VR II. I ordered them both and in the end, I choose the 70-200 FL ED VR and sent the "Z" version back. I liked the fact that it is still made in Japan and it felt better on the camera to me. It is definitely an upgrade and seems to lock on faster in low light. It's super crisp as well. You do have to get used to the fact that the focus ring and the zoom ring are in opposite places from the older version but once you get that mastered you are golden. I do recommend it to anyone that has the older version and is on the fence as to whether or not to upgrade.

A lot of improvements !

A lot of improvements !I like the new 1.1 meters close focusing distance and the very effective VR (vibrations reduction) feature.Nikon inverted the position of the zoom and focusing rings and I like it better !I use a lot manual focusing and having the ring closer to the camera body make manual focusing easier. The lens is very sharp at any apertures and focal but at f/2.8 it lack of contrast (compared to a prime lens like the AF-S 300mm f/4E) witch is good for portraits use but not for wildlife pictures.I use that 70-200mm f/2.8 on D850 and D7200, on a D7200 it give me a 105-300mm f/2.8 cropped lens.

Fabulous lens. Have used it for a year now, shooting mainly high school sports and occasional wildlife, paired with my D500. Sharpness is fabulous, and performance in poor light is far superior to other (higher f/) lenses I've had in the past. Even with the DX format camera, still long for some extra reach when the action moves to the far side of the soccer field. I've coupled it with the Nikon 1.4x teleconverter (AF-S TC-14E III) which helps, at the cost of some light and a bit of loss of clarity. I think the latter, however, just points to how excellent this lens is on its own. Super happy with it -- heartily recommend.

Absolutely In Love with this lens and design

I'm not sure where to start. This is one of the best lens that Ihave used. It's lighter than it's earlier version. The 4 functionalbuttons are strategically placed on the upper edge of the lens can beconfigured for auto lock focus or back button focus. In my opinion, moving the zoom ring to the front makes it easier to use this lens. Itprovides for better stabilization and when used in conjunction with oneof the four focus buttons makes getting your shot much quicker. I knowmany will not agree with me regarding the focus ring but, by resting thelens tripod collar your palm he lens is stabilized balanced and steady.Using this posture places your fingers in easy reach of the forwardfocus rings, You'll notice that one of the four programmable buttons ... MoreI'm not sure where to start. I've usedthis lens on an older Nikon camera and let me say when someone tells youthat better glass will make for better shots they are not kidding.Thelens has 3 VR modes on off and sport. I always turn on VR even whenshooting from a tripod. The new sport setting is wonderful for when youare shooting from a moving vehicle like a car, boat or train. The lenshas fluorine coating which issaid to be superior to other coatings. I have noticed that it collectsless dust and it does seem to be much more fingerprint resistant than myother lens. All in all this lens was a great investment and I would fully recommend it.

Are you freaking kidding me!?

I use this lens primarily for motorsports photography. The F2.8 speed is WORTH EVERY PENNY! This lens performs well at night and in the day. It is spectacular for wild life photography too. It holds up well in a light drizzle without letting water in.Make sure your tripod head is beefy enough to hold up the weight of this lens. It's the size of a 1L nalgene bottle. Without equipment rated to handle the weight it wlll fail. It's good to use this lens with a monopod to save your hands, shoulder, and back from strain of repeatedly bringing this lens to your eye hundreds of times a day.I can't wait to slap a 2X teleconverter on this for the 2024 solar eclipse.

First time using LensRentals • SO IMPRESSED
12 May 2023

I have to say… LensRentals cannot be beat. They offer reasonable rental rates and an exceptional customer experience. Seriously. Not only did the lens arrive earlier than expected, it was packaged so well and I was relieved when it also included a lens hood. Down to including a piece of packing tape with the return shipping label, this company truly focuses on every detail and made this such an easy rental process. 110% would use them again.

NIKKOR AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 FL ED VR Lens
11 June 2022

All the reviews I read prior to buying commented on the speed of the auto-focus and I have to agree with them. I'm used to my other telephoto lenses doing a small amount of "searching" to find the right focus. This lens is very fast and goes straight to the correct focus. Like that all the focus elements are internal so the lens doesn't "telescope" when you zoom in or out. Love the f/2.8 through the entire zoom range. The only negative I have about the lens is the weight. It's heavier than I expected, making hand-holding a bit of a challenge. Not impossible, but a challenge. The tripod foot comes off making hand-holding somewhat easier. However, definitely not a lens you would want to spend the entire day carrying while walking around.

Nikon's 70-200mm f/2.8E delivers beautifully as advertised.

I am probably the last person to ask about a Nikon product, especially their lenses. I am biased, in that I firmly believe, through trial and error, that it is better to use the same lens accessory made for your Nikon, by Nikon, for your Camera. I am Nikon, and Nikon lenses only. They just seem to work as designed and better. I pair all my Nikon camera's with Nikon lenses. Why, I got burned a few times with third party lenses not being as capable a lens designed for the parent product. There is one third party lens that I still own, and use, Tokina. They are good, but even the smallest Tokina, is extremely heavy compared to counter parts. But wait, this is about my 70-200mm Nikkor. It is unbelievable, sharp, crisp, picture depth, throughout the lenses full range (MM). What is really amazing, I can actually shoot hand held at 1/20 shutter speed, with no visible shake noticeable. That is due to the improved VR in the lens. I started to buy the older version of this lens, which was almost a thousand dollars cheaper, but a little camera on my shoulder told me to buy the new E version. I am Sooo glad I did. I am still discovering just how much this lens works delivering the D850 and D750's dynamic range abilities. This lens even improves my D7000's photo's. It is a real Beauty and a Beast of a lens. I'd buy it again, probably will before it gets away for good. I love my DSLR's and I won't be changing them any time soon. When or if I change, it will be to get the Z9, of which I will have my Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8E mounted to it's front end!!

The one thing that made me hesitant about this lens were the many comments about potential loss of functionality with the switch-up of the focus and zoom rings. My previous 70-200 was my go-to lens probably 90% of the time...it lived a long hard life, served me well, then just kind of rolled over and died. When you use a lens THAT much - pretty much non-stop for 15 years - functionality is critical. All of the comments about motor-memory, awkwardness of the extended reach to zoom, and also the inability to shoot with the lens hood mounted in the hold position on the front of the lens were big concerns. The lens hood thing really bothered me - I know I'm not the only shooter who stores the hood handily on the end of the lens so that I can ditch the bag and carry the ... MoreThe one thing that made me hesitant about this lens were the many comments about potential loss of functionality with the switch-up of the focus and zoom rings. All of the comments about motor-memory, awkwardness of the extended reach to zoom, and also the inability to shoot with the lens hood mounted in the hold position on the front of the lens were big concerns. The lens hood thing really bothered me - I know I'm not the only shooter who stores the hood handily on the end of the lens so that I can ditch the bag and carry the bare minimum on location but still have the hood handy. The previous design let you stash it on the end of the lens without blocking the functionality of the zoom, but you can't do that anymore. You have to either shoot with the lens hood mounted or leave it behind if you don't have someplace to stash it, which for me is pretty much always. That said...it is what it is. The lens is beautiful. The edge-to-edge focus is beautiful. The focus distance is about a full foot closer, which I absolutely love. Focus seems really crisp, although I haven't tested it shooting sports yet. I find the motor-memory issue to be minimal - it did slow me down slightly the first couple of uses reaching for the wrong ring, but I don't anticipate it being an issue for long. As for the 'reach' issue, while it is somewhat awkward, I find it helpful to use the tripod foot as a sort of brace to rest the weight of the lens in the palm of your hand and use your fingertips to spin the zoom ring. Leaving the foot loosened or unlocked lets you easily spin from horizontal to vertical without any delay. One commenter solved his reach issue by switching out the nikon foot with the Really Right Stuff the LCF-11 Replacement Foot, which is longer. While I haven't done it yet (pricey), I plan to. A longer foot would pretty much eliminate the reach problem, in my opinion (are u listening, Nikon?).All in all, no regrets. Change happens. It's still a beautiful lens.

Unparalled Sharpness; Excellent Customer Service
29 November 2022

From the first photo I took, I was hooked! The sharpness, resolution, and detail are remarkable. The book says a gain of +4 stops for the VR...meh...+3 stops definitely! Handheld 200mm at 1/60 tack sharp with VR on either normal or sport and equivalent to 200mm at 1/250 with VR off. A little on the contrasty side...had to be careful with our black and white cat...something to keep in mind when setting up lighting. Attached photo D750, 150mm, f5.6, 1/160, ISO 2800.B&H lowered the price for Black Friday right after I bought the lens and honored the price match. I have been doing business with B&H for over 30 years and have always been pleased with their customer service. From SLR film, to med format, to pro DSLR with all the accouterments...they are my first choice!
