I'm a long-time user of Nikon gear. Intrigued by the telephoto capabilities, I bought the P-1000 on a whim. After buying the camera, I had a conversation with a B&H tech regarding its overall capability compared to other Nikon cameras. I will be the first person to admit that if you want to blow these pictures up too much the low density CCD will make them grainy. The trade off is that you don't have a bunch of extra lenses and adapters in your bag so even though the camera is bigger, you don't really have any more weight in the camera bag. I really like it and would recommend it for those people looking for a camera without a bunch of extra equipment.

It arrived the day before I requested delivery and I wasn't home, but it went to a nearby UPS store for pickup, so it wasn't a big deal. I initially got this camera avid 2 years ago to replace a Panasonic lumix. The zoom is amazing, which is what initially attracted me to this. We get polar bears up here and we like to watch them eat but didn't want to get too close to bother them. It's definitely outlasted my previouss cameras (refurbished sales on amazon under $200) and I am impressed. I stepped up and started learning to handle a nikon d850 and lens attachments but this is still my go to. Getting a back up Coolpix P1000 camera (this was hard to find new online because they're in such high demand?) In case anything happens which it tends to with dogs and all the water and salt and abuse my equipment gets.It does pretty great with macro shots as I love taking pictures of plants up here.The ... I had to leave it on one setting all the time, because if I changed the setting, it was very difficult to get it back to a different desired setting, and impossible to do so quickly. In photographing wildlife, it's often critical to be able to change camera settings quickly.The camera had a one year warranty, and it failed after just two years of use, so I can't really complain too much, but none of my previous Nikon cameras ever failed - I simply upgraded to a new camera after about four years of use. If Nikon had a new and improved model to replace the P1000 available now, I would probably just order that one, but I don't want to purchase another P1000, since this one failed so catastrophically. It's maddening that the very nice optics and most other features of this camera are perfectly fine, while the tiny but critical Mode Dial failed after only two years of use. It's possible that the Mode Dial could be fixed easily and inexpensively, but I haven't looked into that. I've never had to have a camera repaired before.
The camera was exactly what I needed for my safari trip. There were very few instances were the distance was to great for the camera, but by then there is no point in trying to get a picture. I found the camera easy to operate, but it would have been ideal to get a cheat sheet for the different camera settings so I didn't have to do so much google searching to find out what setting would work best for sport mode or low light. I also recommend renting an additional battery. When charged the battery lasted for the day, but I had an incident where the battery didn't charge overnight. If it had not been for my sisters having their cameras it would have ruined the day. Overall it was a great camera and I'm so thankful that this site was recommended to me. I got to have ... You can take great photos with this camera and it's portable. I spend a lot of time at nature preserves and I see most people with ungainly SLRs with 400-600mm lenses attached. They are never seen far from their cars.My P1000 is hikable. I usually carry it in a backpack until I'm ready to shoot. That way your hands are free and the camera is protected.For those of you complaining that the sensor is small, I'll leave this comment. It is 16Mp. Many of Nikon's full frame cameras are 20. It's not a significant difference. The P1000s pixels are closer together on the smaller chip, but the resolution should be about the same. Of course, to get the best/sharpest photos you need good light and gentle winds. Same with any camera.Have fun out there.
I had the P900 and loved it. So I expected this camera to be better than that one. I was excited to get it but when I started shooting i found it to be unimpressive. Using the digital zoom. the photos came out fuzzy and the white balance wasn't quite right.. Taking closer photos yielded better results, but the white balance had to be reset every time I took a photo. I tried to get some shots of the moon. The P900 took excellent shots of the moon with lots of crisp details. The P1000, well, let's just say wasn't as good. The images turned out to be a bit fuzzy. You could see the craters but they weren't crisp like the P900. I'm attaching photos to demonstrate the zoom. The P1000 seems to be about twice as heavy as the P900 so it is clunky when trying to take photos on the fly. It is also slower than the P900. It takes a noticeable second to focus and the another to refocus and shoot and more to process the photo. I haven't tried shooting action shots but birds were difficult to capture in flight due to the slow focus and shoot. It seems it gets distracted by something that moves in front of it, like a breeze that moves the leaves in the foreground causes it to lose focus on the subject. That can be remedied by avoiding the auto setting and using a tighter matrix to focus. I will probably get used to the differences and challenges of using this camera but after using it for more than a week, I am still not impressed. There is a sharp learning curve for me. I take a lot of photos but am not professional. This is my 4th bridge camera and it is by far the steepest learning curve.
It's good, almost great. . . For $1000 bucks the camera will bridge many an amateur's needs while consistently delivering very sharp images. It's a very, VERY fun camera to use due to its versatility. Pick a mountain goat off at 1/2 mile, or macro-video a bee at 50 feet. Too cool!It feels very ergonomic in a single grip carry considering its large size and weight.The Bad. Auto focus can struggle. Birds in flight and the Moon for example, Not disabling. Just not great.The Ugly. Its Big, maybe not ugly. IT IS HUGE though; Looks like a baby Rino, but I suspect it's slightly less difficult to transport. It weighs over 3 pounds.That said, Love this camera. No regrets!
This camera is truly phenomenal!! Now that I've had a good amount of time to experiment with it, it's been amazing!!! I couldn't be more impressed with the quality of pictures I can take with it!!! I'm talking about pictures of the moon that I've ONLY EVER seen in magazines!!! Lol. The only thing though (NOT a negative) is...you definitely need a tripod to get super still and extremely high-quality pictures!! And if you download the app on your phone, it will allow you to remotely take pictures on the tripod with absolute perfect stillness and it will automatically send all your pics to your phone too!!! It brings the moon in very big, about the size of a soccer ball!! Yes, it's an expensive camera but it is WELL worth the cost!!! I would still like to get a set of ...
