A good solid professional tool.

The unit is exactly what I needed for my field construction work. One needs to practice with it to accomplish the measurements. It appears to be accurate and simple to use. It is compact and durable. It reads instantly and has good visibility for reading the interior scope and side window. I would strongly recommend it.

Accurate tree height measurements

This is the perfect Instrument for measuring accurate tree heights in the forest. Often and arduous task, the Forestry Pro II makes estimating heights very easy and accurately measures even leaning trees.

I've used both this hypsometer as well as the Laser Technologies Tru Pulse series. This one doesn't supply the intermediate slope of the object you are shooting, like tru pulse, but it does measure heights and distances very well, and is very affordable. No calibration needed with this device, just put the battery in and start measuring. I found it more user friendly than the tru pulse even though it isn't quite as powerful, meaning not quite as many calculated features as the tru pulse. The overall fit and finish is good. I'm satisfied. It is not as heavy as a tru pulse and is smaller in size.I use it to measure the heights of power poles and cliff faces for safety purposes when conducting aerial surveys with my drones (UAVs). I also bought one for my business partner as they are an excellent tool for this purpose. If you need to measure slope of a working face remotely rather than just height and distance, and angle to you, then I would give the edge to tru pulse, otherwise, I would suggest buying this one as it s a great unit and less expensive.Nikon claims a maximum distance of 5250 feet for this, which I have not confirmed, but I did accurately measure a cliff face height from 1,900 feet away with great success. And, that is the type of work I bought this for, so I'm very satisfied with the product.

Excellent tool, worth the price
5 July 2021

After over 20 years experience with both a Suunto clinometer and Spiegel Relaskop, the Pro II is a real upgrade. Mostly. In a dense forest, viewer location is still critical and can be a real challenge for both the top and trunk. You still have to think about leaning trees and weather conditions will still be a challenge. However, the fast distance measuring is worth the price. B&H currently has the best price, by the way, but be sure to call them to get it. Product quality was excellent. Shipping average.

Great for arborist work
21 May 2019

This device works great for arborist work. Measuring the height of trees accurately is very useful, compared to the old general estimation methods... Also, the zoom is very good for inspecting tree canopies from the ground. I can see spring buds at the tops of 50' trees.Works well, recommended.

Great tool for measuring tree heights
18 December 2020

Good price. Fast shipping. This instrument is great for measuring tree heights. Saves alot of time over the course of a day not pulling a tape from tree. A fresh battery will last for many days, if not weeks, of timber cruising. Carry a spare battery with you. For some reason, the battery will go out when you are along way off from your truck! Once you get use to using it you will not go back to a standard clinometer.

Nikon Forestry Pro More Than a Rangefinder
27 September 2016

This was purchased for taking measurements by distribution field engineers in the electric utility industry. We've used golf and hunting based rangefinders in the past, but so far this seems to provide more appropriate features for our work. The ability to show distances in feet vs. yards is nice. It's ability to calculate height measurements is very handy in determining pole and structure heights as well as grade differences. The accuracy is sufficient for most of our field work and it allows a lone worker to quickly obtain measurements that usually takes two people and a lot more time. Can't comment on durability yet as it's only been a month or so since we've acquired this one.

Precise and easy to operate
16 August 2016

I use this for kite aerial photography, it helps me get the camera up to specific height based on my subject height. It's easy to operate by one hand and the information is easy to read. The construction feels strong and the grip is rubbery and gives me confidence that it won't slip out my hand.

I also own the predecessor to this and the Pro II is much faster and responsive. I've used it a couple of weeks so time will tell about durability. So far no complaints.

The Forestry Pro II is an upgrade to the Forestry Pro model, a highly-acclaimed surveying instrument for forestry. It has an extended maximum measurement range – now from 7.5-1,600 m – with improved accuracy and a faster response. HYPER-READ now shows results on the internal display within approximately 0.3 seconds. Measurements include actual distance, horizontal distance, height, angle and vertical separation – the difference in height between two subjects. Two point-measurement can be used when both the base and top of a subject are visible, while three-point measurement gives an accurate assessment even if the base and/or top of the object is hidden.
