Interestingly the lens has not changed much optically since then, and a side by side comparison with this one and my dear old NC Ai-S from 1973 confirms little difference. I purchased mine to add auto focus convenience when I need it, not for anything better optically. The auto focus is consistent, within the limits of a shaft drive system, but it is also easy to manually focus. I regrease my plastic primes to remove the dry rattly feel, and to say it transforms them for the better is an understatement! It has correction for close focus through a floating element that results in impressive sharpness at all distances and apertures, especially in the center of the frame. Corners are excellent by f/4 and outstanding by f/5.6. Set at f/8 depth of field is immense, making this a great lens to shoot from the hip.I can't recommend this lens enough for travel photographers who want to stick with prime lenses. For me, this lens in a pocket and the AF-S 58mm f/1.4G on the camera makes the perfect kit. I could travel the world with just those two primes and really not feel like I'm missing anything.As an added bonus, being a D lens I can unlock the aperture ring, mount it to my 37-year-old FM and enjoy a well-corrected 24mm lens in full manual glory with identical optics and much less cost and weight than the AIs version.

Compact, light, sharp, good colours on photos. Neither of the last two have been scrutinised by anything other than a Mk 1 eyeball because frankly, I don't care enough. Straight out of camera on a sunny day,the images are bob on, not tried it in more taxing light but f2.8 is f2.8. My mate has the 1.4 sigma, and it's lovely but it's massive and heavy by comparison and forget carrying that round all day because I'm heavy enough. If you're bothered about sharpness / chromatic aberration etc etc I can't help, but if you want a light, solid wide angle lens and you've got the cash, I'd definitely recommend it. Good hunting.

It is very (very) contrasty and I feel it creates a very analogue style image on a large sensor machine such as the high megapixel D810. Dark shadows have solidity to them and corners and edges resolve well.The only problem is it is very soft on my DX when other lenses aren't. At first I thought it may need a little focus tweaking in the settings, which I adjusted accordingly. But it's not the issue. I agree with those who mount a prime lens when they want the best optics. I recently added this very sharp, quality built, wide angle 24mm f/2.8D AF Nikkor, compact size, light weight lens to my camera bag. It joins the similar design and build 50mm f/1.4D AF and a “more contemporary” 35mm f/1.8G. You know what? I prefer the older design D models. The look, the feel in my hands while framing a shot and adjusting equipment — there is just something special about it. Oh, I have zoom lenses: two Nikkor and three Tokina. I appreciate what a good zoom can do, but I get more satisfaction and better results from working a great prime lens. I am excited about this lens and recommend it to you for either a FF or a DX camera body.
I bought this lens on a recommendation by the Angry Photographer on YouTube as one of the best lenses for the money. I located this lens from a dealer in Japan. The lens arrived very quickly, was packaged very well, and looked brand new. The quality of the glass is flawless. The exterior was as if never touched. The image quality is second to none. This was one of those lenses that was made in Japan with outstanding build quality. I bought the lens to use as a reverse mounted super macro lens.
I used to have a wide-angle zoom, but I found I always used it at one or the other end of the range. I decided to ditch it and get a single wide-angle that I could use for everything, which saves weight and money. It was the right decision. 24mm is a good compromise for people and event photography - not so wide that composition becomes impossible, but wide enough that you can really get in the middle of the action without losing anything. This particular lens is light (though solidly built), very reasonably priced and delivers images far sharper than my old zoom. I'm very happy with it.
Landscape Test:I tested my old Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 against the newer 24mm f/1.8G. The depth of field is sharper with the old lens at f/2.8, f/4.0, f/5.6, and f/8.0.The depth of field is sharper with the new lens at f/11 and f/16 by a little bit. By depth of field I mean beyond the focus point and all the way to infinity.f/11 was the best performance for both lenses.At the focus point, the new lens is better at f/5.6, f/8.0, f/11.0.The old lens was able to have 2/3rds stop faster shutter speed to get the same brightness in the image as the newer lens.This old 24mm f/2.8 surprised me. Sure, it is soft at f/2.8, butso is the new 24mm f/1.8G lens.The new one focuses much faster, of course.The color saturation seems the same in both lenses.
I love this Nikkor. It's the latest manual version of the lens, and its nice and fast for a 24mm lens. But it's not huge or heavy, comes with the standard 52mm thread also, which really makes a difference to me as I use it for cinema. Integrates into my kit perfectly. Sharp, no distortion I can see, but really gives me a very intimate wide point of view since it focuses really close. The 2.8 was an amazing lens(which I also own), but this f/2 version is a total dream, come true. You say bokeh in a wide lens, yessssirreeee.
