I've only spent a weekend with it and I am absolutely happy with this purchase. I was really excited about being able to replace the f-mount 28-300. This is so much lighter, and much more compact without the FTZ adapter.I actually got a chance to test it out immediately. My wife had a work event where I was able to grab some great shots. I was also able to shoot at my niece's horse show. Granted, I'm still very new to this and am only a hobbyist at best. But, for my purposes... I think this lens performs great. I did notice that it's a bit darker than usual indoors, even at the wide end. So, I would recommend LOTS of natural light, or a flash. But outdoors... this lens is a one stop shop! I bought this lens for a trip to Costa Rica next January. I didn’t want to carry multiple lens’s & this lens was the perfect choice. I have been using it for birds, butterflies and other animals & it has performed beautifully. Great stabilization, crisp images. To get an even longer reach, I have tried going from FX to DX on my Z7ii, & have had good results at 600mm. The only drawback is the F8 at max zoom. So far this hasn’t been a problem, but it cloud in low light. This is the only trade-off for having a multipurpose lens that is easy to carry & has great reach, but it is worth it. I would definitely recommend this lens.

The only downsides are that the aperture is already at f/8 by the time I’ve zoomed to 200mm where the 24-200mm would still give me 2/3 stop more light at f/6.3. Obviously, the compromise is that it needs to be bright to use this lens as a telephoto, otherwise, you’ll be pushing ISO really high and introducing noise. The other downside is that this lens won’t accept a teleconverter unlike the 100-400mm. VR works as expected and really helps reduce shake at 400mm. The 77mm filter size like my other lenses means it’s one less filter size I need. All in all, I’m happy to trade the weight and size for a bit slower aperture and very slight loss of sharpness at the extremes.

I do a lot of nature photography (animals, plants, landscapes), and until recently, my rig was a Nikon D800 with two go-to Nikkor AF-S VR Zoom Lenses: a 200-500mm, f/5.6, weight 5.07 lb; and, a 24-70mm, f/2.8, weight 2.35 lb. I purchased a Nikon Z 8 last month, and these f-mount lenses have still been my go-to lenses on my new Z 8, with an FTZ II converter. They serve me well, but they weigh a lot. I put myself on the waiting list for this new Z mount, 28-400mm, f/4-8 lens, and bought it last week. It weighs 1.6 lb, very light weight. It doesn’t quite have the range of my long zoom, and it’s 1 f-stop slower than it is. And it’s 1 to 2.5 f-stops slower than my short zoom. What about sharpness? It doesn’t quite have the range of my long zoom, and it’s 1 f-stop slower than it is. And it’s 1 to 2.5 f-stops slower than my short zoom. What about sharpness? I put this lens through its paces shooting wildflowers and birds in full daylight on sunny days, and I am very satisfied with image sharpness. I’ve uploaded with this review 2 images of birds, 2 images of wildflowers, 2 images of mammals (one is a cat). To my eye, all came out surprisingly sharp. What about low light? Before purchasing this lens, I practiced taking photos on my f-mount lenses in low light at f/8 instead of f/5.6 for the long lens, and at f/5.6 instead of f/2.8 for the short lens. The images in these practice trials were noticeably noisier than they would have been wide open, but they were still workable. For most of my low light applications, this new lens is acceptable, but if I were doing mostly low light photography, I’d use faster lenses.Where I see myself using this lens a lot is during my daily nature hikes, where I’m switching back and forth between photographing wildflowers and photographing birds. And I will use it when I travel. Last year I spent 3 weeks in Scotland and thought my 80-400mm zoom would be the perfect travel lens. It served me well when I saw wildlife. But most of my photo-ops were landscapes and wildflowers, and I ended up using my cell phone for most of my photography. Next time, I will bring the Nikkor Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR lens. If I was on a nature photography expedition and weight wasn’t an issue, I would bring a full array of camera bodies and lenses. But if I need to travel light, this is my new go-to lens.
I got this lens for my Z7ii to take nature photos while still having somewhat of a wide angle available. This lens has exceeded all expectations. It’s lighter than expected (coming from an older 400mm Sigma lens). It is very sharp. Not nearly as sharp as the 120mm S lens, but incredible quality for an all in one.The customizable lens ring is awesome, although I wish it had a Fn. button. The zoom lock works well and keeps it from extending when it’s pointed down. The included lens hood works very well and is the perfect size. The f/4/f/8 aperture isn’t the most awesome, but for what it is, it’s incredible.Overall an outstanding, somewhat budget friendly, light, solid all in one telephoto for your Nikon Z.
In a word, OUTSTANDING! This Nikkor lens has plenty of range thereby replacing having a few (and heavier) lenses while on the go; and no need to switch to another. Although the Nikkor 28-400mm lens has some weight, it just feels good. There has been some concern about the f/4-8, but I haven't experienced any issues as yet. As you extend it from 28mm and f/4, it increases to f/8 at about 200mm. I have, and love, my Nikon FX D850 camera along with a wonderful assortment of Prime Nikkor F-mount lenses. My Nikkor Z-mount 28-400mm lens is on a Nikon FX Z f camera--together they go where I go. My only negative is that the rectangular lens hood blocks the AF-assist illuminator sensor on a Z f camera.
Purchased as a one lens travel kit along with a Nikon Z6ii. The photos speak for themselves and all the attached photos are at 400mm. If your an ordinary amateur photographer and not a pro or photo journalist who all seem to poo poo this lens or compare it to the Nikon Z 100-400, the performance is great at any focal length but only in GOOD LIGHT. It's not a good low light performer and I don't believe it was designed to be and it shouldn't be compared to the Nikon Z 100-400 either which is in a different design, build & performance class.Controls are minimal, lockswitch and control ring but I didn't feel I needed any.Its a lot heavier than the Nikon Z 24-200 but I found I quickly got used to it.I think it's worth every penny I paid for it!
I am an advanced amateur photographer, owning some of Nikon's best cameras and lenses. My interest in the 28-400mmf4/8 lens was for having a travel lens with me at all times that could have real telephoto reach. My Nikon 180-600mmf5.6/6.3, 500mmf5.6PF, 400mmf4.5, and 70-200mm2.8S lenses are fantastic quality glass but, often, I find it a burden to carry such lenses on trips that may not require their use.I decided to give this new offering of Nikon a try, though my expectations were relatively low. I expected this lens to have too many compromises to image quality and function, as most super zooms in the past have demonstrated. But I was wrong. Read on.First let's discuss image quality. I was able to compare the 28-400mm lens with the telephotos listed above as well as Nikon's excellent 24-120mmf4S lens. I was quite surprised how well the 28-400mm performed in the center area. From 28mm all the way to 400mm, the 28-400mm held its own. Though slightly less sharp and slightly less contrast than its expensive counterparts, overall, this lens was quite acceptable for most uses. The corners do soften up a bit as the lens zooms towards 400mm but, for most nature photography that is not really important. This lens is sharp where it needs to be! This observation comes from someone who is addicted to sharpness! In addition, lens distortion, vignetting, and chromatic aberrations are well corrected in Nikon's software (and cannot be turned off). All of my testing was done on the Nikon Z8. My hope was that focus acquisition, focus tracking, and low light focus acquisition would be reasonably good and it was. It truly is a modern day wonder that a lens with a maximum aperture of f8 (from 200 to 400mm) could focus so quickly and accurately.Flare resistance is quite good, considering that this lens does not have some of Nikon's advanced coatings. The VR worked extremely well. I actually got a sharp image at 400mm and 1/5th of a second exposure. In addition, when taking multiple image shots in the VR normal mode there was virtually no jumping around of the image within the frame. Most of my other Nikon lenses have to the in the VR sport mode to minimize this annoying effect. The ability to focus close is, of course, very handy, allowing those fun images of insects, small flowers etc. that the big Nikon lenses just cannot do.Until one has the 28-400mm in their lands I do not think they can really understand how extensive the zoom range really is, and, how light and small this lens really is. For the first time, I can actually walk around taking 400mm images and not stand out from the crowd. A perfect travel lens to say the least. In summary, the Nikon 28-400mm lens does what we all wanted such a lens to be. Very good at all focal lengths, sharp even wide open in the center area, decent in low light situations, yet small and compact.A caveat would be the Bokeh performance but, hey, that is why the experts shell out the money and put up with the weight and size of the exotic lenses. Another caveat is low light performance. As decent as the 28-400mm is under dim light, the exotic lenses will do much better.Though I may take one or two of my large lenses with me on some outings, I know that the 28-400mm lens will accompany me on every outing and on every trip. It is that good. Well worth the money and then some.
This should eventually be offered as with all Z cameras as a kit lens because it's a fantastic do-it-all (almost) piece of glass that can be left on the camera most of the time.Is it the sharpest Z lens? No. Is it the fastest? Not even close! But under most circumstances the average person will find themselves in, this single lens covers A LOT of uses. It's great for pretty much anything outdoors. Long enough for most sporting events, some wildlife, air shows, potraiture... wide enough (same fov as your phone) for vacations, landscapes, some architecture.... focuses close enough for detailed/artsy botanical shots... great for family outings, outdoor events, general travel. It's biggest downside IMO is it's speed. But with how well the Z cameras handle noise these days, you can really push the ISO to make up for a lot of that.Again, this lens is not the sharpest but it's no slouch either! I've definitely found it sharp enough. For the price, size, focal length range, and having up to 400mm, and overall performance, I find this lens to be a great value and worthy of having in addition to your higher end pieces of glass.
Anyone buying this lens must first come to terms that this is not an S-Line lens. If you bought this lens you should be thinking in terms of a decent lens on the cheap. I often see reviews trashing a lens because it doesn’t perform like high level lens or it doesn’t have function buttons nor is it weather sealed. If you can comprehend English you would have known that. The fact is that this is a really good lens for the price. Best performance will be outdoors with a range of f4–F8 and not in the rain or a sand storm. I did a test on some textured weathered wood to see how the center image quality was verses the edge quality. For a lens at this price, it performs very well all the way out to 400mm. Key words ‘very well’, not 100-400…but very well for the price. It’s ... MoreAnyone buying this lens must first come to terms that this is not an S-Line lens.
