Nikon Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR Lens
Are you going on a trip? With its extensive zoom range of 24 to 200 mm, beautiful bokeh, and fast autofocus, this telephoto zoom lens may be the only lens you need. It is lightweight, easily fits into smaller camera bags, captures detailed photos and videos, and is meticulously sealed against dust and moisture. Aspherical lenses, including one made of ED glass, contribute to effective distortion minimization across the entire zoom range. You will get sharp images with vibrant colors and brilliant contrast – both in wide-angle and zoom ranges. Nikon's ARNEO coating combats ghosting and flare, resulting in clearer images, even in wide-angle shots with light sources in the frame. Point light sources like street lamps at night are rendered faithfully. The integrated Vibration Reduction (VR) system allows for shots with exposure times up to 4.5 stops longer. This enables you to take telephoto shots without motion blur in fading daylight and achieve smooth pans during video recordings of expansive landscapes. A flower breaking through concrete. Patterns in landscapes and portraits. With a minimum focusing distance of just 0.5 m (at 24 mm focal length), you have full creative freedom even at short distances. This lens for mirrorless full-frame cameras makes traveling with a telephoto zoom a pleasure. The large Z-mount allows for a unique design with larger lenses in the rear part of the lens – a positive side effect of this is also excellent balance and ergonomics.

I have always shunned superzoom lenses if I wanted ultimate image quality, not just sharpness but also with regards to well-controlled veiling and color fringing. With the legacy F-mount, even the OEM superzooms aren't all that great in my opinion; so much image quality needs to be compromised for the sake of portability and convenience. This lens, however, changed everything for me: it's not just a very good superzoom lens; it's just a good lens, periodBefore I get into that, let's talk about what the lens is capable of. First, it's small for what it can do. It's not an S lens but the build quality is surprisingly good and it has the heft (but not TOO heavy) to indicate that there's quality to it. There are trade-offs, like its minimum aperture jumps quickly to f6.3 at 70mm...to compensate for that, it does have 5 stops of VR.Now as for the image quality. One would assume it's horrible at its maximum aperture; I'm happy to report that this is not the case for this lens...no need to stop down to get the sharpness you need (although stopping down does improve the sharpness towards the corners).I am usually a prime lens snob or if I'm using a zoom, it's the huge and heavy f2.8 constant aperture OEM lenses. I cannot get over the fact that this almost reduces the need for the PRO lenses...almost...of course, there's still some advantage for the primes and f2.8 zooms (DOF, etc)...but if you're on vacation and can only carry one lens? This is it.

I bought this lens after doing the homework, downloaded photos, checked any reviews out there. I knew this is not a prime nor the 24-70 S but the reviews were positive and the photos were fine. When my lens came it was a total delusion. Very soft on both sides, much more on the left side. To me it was unacceptable. B&H took it back with a great service, but I still wanted the lens.I gave it a second try and the lens was a different story this time. Make no mistake, there are reviews out there saying that it's like the 24-70 S F4. IT IS NOT. My test was done with a Z7. Very sharp at the center, some softness on the sides when full open from 24 to 35. Gets better from there and if you step it down to F8 is almost as good as the 24-70 on the entire range. It's a ... It's a compromise that is very good for travels. The lens is only 57g heavier than a 24-70F4, it's virtually the same length if you un-collapse the 24, otherwise it's a bit longer. It is almost the same diameter. If you print, even large prints you will not notice a difference. On the computer you do on the edges. Overall, for the price and the purpose it's a great lens. Last 30 years I was hoping to find a useful superzoom, it never happened before this lens. A note on the built. I'm hard pressed to see substantial difference either cosmetic or in robustness. The mount is metal like the S 24-70, the ring where the flange is mounted is metal on the 24-70 and plastic here but they are very similar cosmetically. This is good lens built to last and tanks to B&H for their impressive customer service.

I bought the Nikon Z50 with the 2 kit lenses (16-50, 50-250)and I found out that they were limited. The small one was too small and it was like looking through a periscope. The Large lens was the one that I was using almost all the time because of better optics but it was not practical for closer shots. Also, I did not like the fact that you had to turn the lenses each time to unlock them because there was a small time delay before the lens becameactive. The optics for the small lens was not as good as the large lens. I know that the kit lenses were designed to be light and OK for all shots. But in the end I needed a more professional type of lens with good close-up and good long range shots. One thing that concerned me was the fact the large kit lens would emit ... One thing that concerned me was the fact the large kit lens would emit a rattling noise when shook at little. I was told that was designed by the factory to satisfy the VR requirement. The new 24-200 Lens has no such rattle and I can set the camera for VR anyway. The new lens operates fast and has a solid feel to it. The optics seem be a little better than the large kit lens too. It is easy to grab, hold, zoom and shoot. I wish that there was a special kit package that combined the Z50 with the 24-200 lens at the time I bought the camera. The Z50 is eventually going to be the backup camera. I hope to buy the Z7 II as a the primary camera so the lens would be good fit for the Z7 II. Other lenses will have to follow for special shots.

I was hesitant to buy this lens at first but I needed a little more reach for traveling. I had a Nikon 24-70mm but it just didn't have the reach I was hoping for, so I bought the 24-120 that served me well for many years. I recently purchased a Nikon Z9 and with a couple of the larger zoom telephotos coupled with the Z9, I found that this old man just couldn't carry that camera coupled with a big telephoto around for any length of time. I recently purchased the 24-200mm lens and thought I would try it around the neighborhood before heading to Europe on vacation. I also have a Nikon D850 and was contemplating using that camera because of the weight difference but really wanted to use the Z9. Well, I think the Z9 with the 24-200mm is a match made in heaven. The combination is not as heavy as I thought it would be and the 24-200mm is razor sharp. The rotation of the lens barrel is smooth and solid and is really a sleeper of a perfect lens. The extra reach I get from this lens is perfect for me. What I can't get as far as extra distance, I can make up for in post processing. I don't regret for a second purchasing this lens and can't wait for my next vacation.
I've had this lens for 1.5 years and love it. I love the versatility of a zoom especially when when carrying multiple lenses may not be an option - like hiking or traveling. This lens, at a fraction of the weight/size and price of the 70-200mm f/2.8, made sense for me. I was pleasantly surprised by its sharpness and, even though it's not the fastest lens, I've been able to shoot handheld in lower-light with the Z6 with no problems. I've hiked all over with it and taken it on several city trips - it fits in a purse and isn't so conspicuous that you feel weird pulling it out when everyone else is using an iphone.Photos for reference: Marmot - versatility of reach at 64mm & 200mm; Mountains/Lake - pretty sharp at f/11; Waterfall - handheld at 1/20s (F/11, ISO 100); ... I bought this lens to fit on my Z6, which is what I use when on holiday and, to be honest for the money, this lens has far exceeded my expectations! It's light and compact and feels very nicely balanced on the Z6. If you check out YouTube reviews, you will find that a lot of professional photographers say the same. They bought it for travelling, not expecting great results and have been pleasantly surprised by just how good the images are.The image quality is very good, and if you use F8, the sharpness is more than acceptable. The beauty of this lens is that I can now just travel with a single lens, and because you're not constantly swapping lenses, it protects the sensor in very dusty environments.Another nice feature is the minimum focusing distance, so, if ... A bit soft around the edges fully zoomed in and doesn't let in enough light for low-light scenarios, but other than that, fantastic. It's not quite as sharp as the Z 24-70 f/4 across the common range, but it's *almost* as sharp, which is an incredible accomplishment for a zoom that goes to almost triple the focal length. It's at least an order of magnitude sharper than the 18-300mm that was my previous mainstay fully zoomed in.Bokeh is not particularly special, but it's acceptable. The small aperture is an obstacle after sunset or in dim indoors settings, but is fine otherwise. Sunstars aren't as nice and sharp as other lenses I've used, but if you stop down to f/22 they'll still look pretty good.I get some softness on my Z7 II so the lens can't out-resolve 45 ... Hand-holding at 83mm I can get sharp photos of waterfalls at 1/5s. I only need a tripod if I want/need to go longer than that.My last trip I took my Z7 II, Z50, Z 24-200, Z 24-70 f/4, and F mount 105mm f/2.8 macro lens. The 24-200 stayed permanently on the Z7, and I never felt the need to break out any other lenses for any purpose whatsoever. In the future I'll just bring the 24-200 and Z7 II, and leave everything else behind.Superzooms are compromise lenses by their nature, but the Z 24-200 compromises surprisingly little. If you do any travel photography or otherwise don't need the incredible sharpness and large apertures of the f/2.8 Z lenses, this lens may do what you need.
First the bad. It's optically slow and it gets there pretty quickly -- it's already registering its slowest f6.3 aperture on the Z cameras by about the 85mm mark -- as such, you won't be isolating much optically with this lens, nor using it a lot in really dim light. This is really the only bad.Now the good. It's quite compact for its zoom range --the benefit of that optical slowness-- focuses fast and accurately, has the same color cast as my other Z lenses, is quiet and zoom function is butter smooth. With Z camera stabilization, I have successfully hand-held shots as low as sec at the 200mm end(!), so for me the optical slowness and inherent slower shutter speeds are mitigated somewhat by this; and then coupled with the excellent higher ISO performance of these ... The focal range is versatile for sure, optically this lens is very good from 24 through 135, and remains quite good right up to the 200mm mark. It turns your Z body into a very handy one lens do-it-all camera.I have faster primes and faster zooms in the ranges covered by this lens and so can easily grab one of them when the photographic situation calls for it -- but that also means this lens gets left on the camera a lot simply because of its ready-to-go versatility.
I shoot the 70-200mm f2.8 when I need to blow out the background, but there is definitely a place for this lens in my collection. It is just so versatile. Being able to walk out the door with 24 to 200mm of range without carrying a bag is so nice. The images I have created with it are more than acceptable. I shoot for the joy of shooting, and creating. I'm not zooming to 100% and studying text with a magnifying glass. The lens has no glaring short comings, and as such, it will be a regular staple when I head out for a nice photo walk in the woods or a big city.I love that I can lock the zoom so it doesn't creep out slowly and bang against my leg when I'm using a cross body strap.
I own several nice lenses, most of which I have purchased primarily for my Nikon D850 and I probably didn't NEED this lens, but I was looking for a travel lens for my Nikon Z6ii. I took this lens to Pinnacles National Park for a hike today, and I couldn't have been more pleased. For the hike I also took my Sigma 100-400mm f5-6.3 Contemporary (which I love) and my Zeiss Milvus f2M ZF.2 Macro lens (which I love), just in case I was disappointed with the NIkon Nikkor z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR Lens. After all, I didn't want to waste a good hike. I also took my FTZ adapter and my Sigma TC2001 2x Teleconverter in case I wanted the extra reach. I could have left that all behind as well as my Peak Design travel tripod. I got 90 very nice frames out of 91 shots and I was ... If your needs are to take photos in during daylight, then this is a wonderful travel and hiking lens. It will slow the shutter speed indoors at night and under low light conditions, but if you really need to shoot under those conditions, then buy a nice Nikon Speedlight and your problems are solved.
