Nikwax Tech Wash & TX Direct Twin Pack
Nikwax Tech Wash is the market leader; it has been specifically designed and optimised for breathable waterproof fabrics. Nikwax Tech Wash is a highly effective cleaner. Additionally it will revitalise existing Durable Water Repellency (DWR) and revive breathability. It is the safe way to thoroughly clean your waterproof clothing and equipment. Application in a washing machine is quick, easy, and ensures that the whole garment is thoroughly cleaned. Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In is the market leader. It is easy and quick to apply in a washing machine, and its highly Durable Water Repellency (DWR) develops on air drying. The washing machine application ensures that the treatment goes right through the garment, treating seams, tapes and cords, as well as the fabric. Also, as the need for tumble drying is removed, this saves energy and protects more vulnerable, older, garments from heat. Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In has been specifically designed and optimised for breathable waterproof garments; it leaves a flexible water repellent treatment on individual fibres allowing moisture vapour to pass through, maintaining breathability.

I used both the Tech Wash and the TX Direct as our jackets had been, lets say not cleaned for a while. We've had a load of rain here on the east coast of Oz this past two months and that finally beat the waterproofing that was left on our jackets. Hence me googling and coming across this stuff. Followed the instructions and initially at least both our jackets are as-new, certainly from a waterproofing point of view. I guess time will tell but so far so good. The only slight downside is It's not that cheap – only worth it for fairly decent waterproofs I'd say.

Was really impressed with this. Coat used to simply absorb water and now the water beads like it was when it was new.I put the Washing machine on a 40 degree cycle (empty) to remove any detergent. Then washed the coat on a 30 degree low spin cycle, then repeated with the Proofer on a delicates cycle. Hung it up to dry and put the washing machine on a 40 degree cycle (empty) to remove any remaining product

This twin pack is easy to use in the washing machine. It doesn't smell of chemicals. I have used it on a sea salt tin cloth coat. It hasn't rained yet so I can't comment on the effectiveness of the waterproofing. But Seasalt recommend this method of cleaning.

I have used this product for a number of years. Waterproof breathable garments lose their ability to shed water after a period of time and need cleaning and reproofing. Ordinary detergents are too harsh and will strip the water repellent properties from the garment. Tech Wash is a more gentle cleaner which also revitalises the water repellent properties of the fabric. However as it is a gentle detergent it does struggle to completely remove ground in dirt, so don't leave it too long before you wash! Particularly dirty areas should be treated with neat Tech Wash and a sponge or a soft nylon brush before washing. Relatively new garments or those recently waterproofed will have their water repellent properties renewed by Tech Wash alone. Particularly dirty areas should be treated with neat Tech Wash and a sponge or a soft nylon brush before washing. Relatively new garments or those recently waterproofed will have their water repellent properties renewed by Tech Wash alone. Use TxDirect to renew waterproofing on garments that have not been re-proofed for some time. Simply machine wash one or two garments at a time with the appropriate quantity of Tech Wash (100 ml for soft water areas, 150 ml if you have medium or hard water) following the garment care label instructions. If you need to reproof, follow this with another washing cycle using the same quantities of TxDIrect. This will also lubricate zips on the garment, an added bonus! Available in 300 ml and 1 L bottles, the larger sizes are much more economical. Expensive? yes, compared to ordinary detergents, but not if you want your waterproof clothes to continue to keep you dry!
With the Tech Wash I spread some on marked areas of my jacket before putting in the washing machine for a full wash with correct measure of Tech Wash but in general it did not do a very good job of removing the stains or generally soiled areas around cuffs. It may be better for mud stained clothing but mine was just general 'use' marks. As for the TX-Direct waterproofer - I used this in the washing machine too as directed and was not impressed as the machine ended up with a coating on the drum and I had to run a 90 degree cycle afterwards to remove it. Also when testing the jacket afterwards it showed that the DWR coating was not evenly applied with some areas beading and other areas the water soaked in. Also when testing the jacket afterwards it showed that the DWR coating was not evenly applied with some areas beading and other areas the water soaked in. I therefore did a hand treatment with the TX-Direct which fully coated the jacket. It is therefore far better to use the waterproofer by using a hand treatment rather than a machine to ensure all areas get treated - it also has the benefit of using a lot less of the TX-Direct so you get more treatments out of one bottle! So, in summary, Not a particularly effective wash treatment (possibly would be better with hand was as can focus on dirty areas) but DWR treatment appears very effective if treated by hand rather than machine. Overall I would not recommend using a machine atall and doing it all by hand and perhaps just spin (and possibly rinse) using a machine. As to how long the DWR treatment will last I have not tested.
Apart from driving various types of large vehicles, including the obvious cars and vans, I also ride motorcycles. Being an avid motorcyclist who enjoys being out in all weathers on my bikes, I also do a fair amount of walking, usually with our German Shepherd dog. The terrain and weather often varies and not only covers the usual fields / parks, but woods, hills and beach. Out on the bikes, riding at whatever the limit maybe when it rains one tends to get the full force of mother nature, unlike folks tucked safely in their cars. Just as with any other waterproof clothing or those that are sold as water repellent, motorcycle clothing also needs cleaning and re-treating from time to time in order to maintain its efficiency in dealing with the weather. Just as with any other waterproof clothing or those that are sold as water repellent, motorcycle clothing also needs cleaning and re-treating from time to time in order to maintain its efficiency in dealing with the weather. I can honestly recommend the dual pack of NIKWAX TECH WASH & TX DIRECT WASH 300ML TWIN PACK FOR WATER PROOF CLOTHING to do the job as advertised. Easy to use with clear precise instructions and more than enough to clean and treat three jackets, two pair of trousers and the inner's of all these clothes. I'm more than happy with the results and especially the effectiveness of how the product works.. especially after a 700 mile round trip on one of my motorcycles recently with the weather literally throwing everything it could at both man and machine. I was a great feeling and gave peace of mind, knowing I was not only dry inside the clothing, but the outer was only marginally damp. Something that didn't happen last time when I made a similar trip as I was soaked prior to reaching my destination. To conclude, I was that impressed, I searched for the best deals online and purchased a couple more packs, including the products that Nik Wax manufacture for both leather and footwear. Worth trying if you've never used it before.
As a dog walker I am that insane kind of English woman who is seen in every weather from sunshine bliss to rain sodden, mud laden madness as the dog needs her walk and she is my responsibility. With all the weather, mud, salt from snowy days and generally being near a large German Shepherd when she's shaking, my coats always take the brunt of it. As I walk along a country lane at night I have a bright yellow waterproof coat that gets clarted up quite easily due to the colour. I purchased Nikwax tech wash and washin in a hope that my coat could be restored by to life after its blathering by mother nature (and my dog). Good as new and looking good. It actually made my coat more waterproof than it was when I got it and it was pretty damn good then. It does about 10 goes too so 100% worth the money. Or you could not bother and just buy 10 new coats but my betting is you would have been financially better just buying the NikWax products. I would say buy both the tech-wash and the wash-in as you get the results you were wanting! Highly recommend this product.
I am a keen motorcycle rider and advanced motorcycle skills, instructor. I ride throughout the year and recently in the extremely hot weather. Nikwax is the only product I have ever used to clean and refresh my gear. I have never been disappointed and it cleans and waterproofs - what more do you want :-)
Over the years have built up 6 flotation suits, all have become dirty with the usual smells. Rather than buy another at 100+ decided to try cleaning one. The usual rinse down with warm water never seemed to work for me. Unfortunately, told in no uncertain terms" you're not putting the in my new washing machine or the bath". Using a bucket containing the recommended right mix I set about cleaning one in the garden with a sponge and clean water. Results were surprisingly good. I never expected it to remove some of the ground in stains and, for most it didn't. It did however remove most of lighter stains and gave this suit a fresher, brighter and less odourless appearance. Yet to try the waterproofing but expect similar success.
I bought this to try and get more use out of my tent. It's 19 years old but a great design and suits my needs perfectly. Was looking a wee bit grubby in places and I got a couple of very small leaks on one of this years trips. Can't bear to part with it yet. Washed the outer in the bath (too big for a machine)and it has come up a treat. I then gave it the Tx direct treatment and noticed that it instantly became more buoyant in the water which suggests its reproofed very well. Also the water drained off very quickly when I emptied the bath. I followed the instructions on the bottles and am delighted with the results. Will probably need to do a seam check too but feel the tent has had a major revival already. I seemed to have plenty left so hubby's motorbike jacket ... MoreI bought this to try and get more use out of my tent. It's 19 years old but a great design and suits my needs perfectly. Next dry day: the inner tent is getting the treatment. Not sure if I can do an update later, but if so I will take some photos on next camping trip and update on effectiveness of the reproofing.
