I bought two of these fans to add to my Fractal Design Define R4 Case. I ended up using the included two Fractal Design Silent Series R2 140mm fans for rear and top exhaust, and these two Noctua fans on the front intake. Very easy to install, for my case front intake there is a plastic tray where 140mm fans can be snapped into place. I had to remove the rubber noise dampeners on the corners of these fans. Even without the rubber pads the fans are almost completely silent, even at full speed. I thought the Fractal fans were pretty quiet, but these are even quieter. At full speed the Fractal fans make more audible noise than the Noctuas which are truly silent no matter what speed. Totally worth the money if you're looking for an excellent case fan that is always quiet.

Some may scoff at the price, "All for a fan," but I've had Noctua fans in my previous computers and they are still running. I built a HTPC in 2005 that still has the same Noctua fans in it that are still running. With other brand's fans, I find myself replacing them every 2-3 years because they start vibrating and making a ton of noise. Save yourself some headache and money in the long run and get Noctua Fans. You can use them in future builds.

The performance and the warranty justify the bad color scheme and the high price, in my opinion. I've been avoiding these fans for years on the basis of those two things, and after trying pretty much every other high end option out there, I can say definitively that no other performance-oriented fan will last 6 years reliably, and it will not have as good an airflow:noise ratio as these. So the question is - do you want an amazing fan that will save you money in the long run and perform great, but look lousy? Or do you want a better looking fan that won't perform quite as well and will need to be replaced in a matter of months-2 years because it dies? It's really up to you. Geeks like to keep the boxes of their fancy motherboards and graphics cards to display them in their rooms. Yeah, I know what you're thinking, but its true, for reasons inexplicable and lost on me. No offense, but these are just fans. Lose the expensive customer-bait retail packaging and knock $8 off the price of each of your products. Your customers will thank you and be able to buy more. Plus you'll get less cons in these reviews. We know your stuff is good, we don't need shock-and-awe when we open the shipping boxes (and read our invoices).
These 140mm, 1,200 rpm fans are more than adequate for typical everyday use, home office use, and casual gaming. For hardcore gaming and overclocking Newegg offers Noctua 140mm fans that operate at 1,500 rpm. These fans are not silent or inaudible. There is still some noise but they are definitely quieter than other fans I have tried. There is no high pitched sound. It is more like white background noise.
The build quality is sturdy and the performance is strong with good airflow and low noise, even when the speed is turned up the noise isn't too intrusive. 4 pin PWM enables user defined automatic speed control. The only real complaint is the price. 20+ is too much for a mass produced Chinese made plastic fan. A 5 price drop would mean stellar value to go with the performance.
I have had these for several years now and they are still performing well. The build quality of the plastic is much higher than that of many other brands.Good soft corner mounts allow for zero case resonance. When set to full power, the only noise I can hear coming from my case is the whooshing airflow from these fans, not the motors in the fans themselves.Excellent airflow, zero noise from unit itself and well built.I would buy again for any future machine.
I bought this because I wasn't satisfied with the Cougar CF-V14HB I used to replace the LED intake fan in my new PC (Lian Li PC-60FN case). Both the Cougar and Noctua fans have similar airflow specs and actually turned out to emit a similar amount of noise, to my ears, when I compared them side-by-side (both at full speed). I do prefer the Noctua, as the Cougar has more of a buzzing/whining character. It might be that the Cougar's blades are quieter, while the Noctua has a quieter motor. Both fans are basically new, so perhaps the Cougar would have gotten better after some break-in period. Although, I should note that, when I held the spinning Cougar fan in my hand, it seemed out of balance. I think that could affect its lifespan. My 120 mm Cougar (bought at the same time) is also like that, so it might be due to an actual design flaw, rather than just poor production tolerances. In the end, the Noctua wolud be my preference, though the overall difference isn't huge. If you're planning to use them at lower speeds, the Noctua might be significantly quieter, since I assume the Cougar's motor noise will simply change in pitch but not volume.
I had to google the part numbers to determine which low noise adapter was which. I started with the "LNA", but there was a surprising amount of low frequency atonal 'air moving' noise. Switched to "ULNA", and the noise is bearable but still far from silent. I have owned several 120mm Noctua fans and have been consistantly impressed with how much air they can move while remaining bearly audible. This fan seems to prioritize CFM over noise a little bit more than those 120mm fans. (Disclaimer: The 140mm fan is installed in front of hard drives with only a grill in front of it. Most of my 120mm Noctua fans are in cases like the Antec SOLO II where line-of-sight to the fan is blocked. This fan went in my wife's case, which was not designed for silence. I am comparing to a "silent" PC, so my idea of what qualifies as quiet may be different from yours. YMMV.)
I was on a quest to build a very quiet PC both idle and under load. This fan has made a great contribution to that objective. It does a fantastic job at pushing lots of air whilst doing it quietly too.Ultimately keeping my small form factor gaming PC (which could only accommodate one case fan) very cool.5 Stars!. I'm forever sticking with Noctua!
