I recently gave my Olympus OM D M5 MKIII to my daughter as an upgrade from her Lumix G7 since she is now using her camera more seriously. I really like the Olympus and it was my primary camera body for all of my Macro Photography due to its compact size. So this was the perfect excuse for getting the newer OM System version. Even the image stabilization is improved by a full stop from 6.5 to 7.5EV with Sync-IS lenses (up from 5.5 to 6.5EV with any lens).So overall I am more than happy with this newer version that OM System has introduced.Would I have upgraded knowing now what I do having the newer camera in my hands, still probably not but if this is a new camera decision for you I definitely recommend this fantastic camera! This compact, lightweight and incredibly great image quality and solidly built.

Before I get into the negatives I want to state that this is a good camera. It has many great features, solidly built in a small form factor. I like the image quality I have been able to achieve when I get the camera set the way I want it. Paired with the Zuiko Digital ED 14-42 EZ lens it makes a good walking around camera. I am and have been for decades a Canon guy and this is for all intents and purposes my first departure from that. I can switch to a different Canon camera and very quickly start shooting any setting. I can't do that with this camera. For me the settings are very complicated and even using the manual I have trouble finding what I want to set/adjust and understanding how to do it. But in the end, even though the OM-5 is just a refresh/update of the E-M5 iii, the OM-5 is a better camera-- better weathersealing, improved processor, hand-held high-res, starry sky AF, etc. You can find other cameras that improve on the OM-5 in some ways. However, it's hard to find another camera this small and light, with IP53 weathersealing, outstanding image stabilization, a huge range of lenses available (new and used), and all in this price range.

Good looking camera with plenty of features in a small package. Excellent image quality with the 12-45 f4 Pro kit lens. Autofocus is very quick and usually very accurate - despite not having the AI features of the top model OM-1. The camera is small and light - had to check my bag to see if it was actually in it! The menu system is not very intuitive - youtube I found to be the best help for that. Once set up however, you don't have to dive into the menus as the camera can be configured with short cut custom buttons, My Menu or through the Super Control Panel. I added the additional OM-Systems grip for a more comfortable grip with bigger lenses. Image quality is great up to ISO 1600 after which a little bit of noise reduction may be required. The outstanding OIS works very well at slow sutter speeds (reducing ISO for static scenes) as well as for the computational features. The size of the camera and lenses plus the robust build and weathersealing of both camera and lenses was the main reason for me to buy the OM-5 while it was on offer. It is somehow more fun taking pictures with it than with my Sony, great image quality and small enough to always be with you. Low light image quality above 3200 does suffer but that also depends greatly on the lens used. The camera tends to preserve shadow detail, which may seem odd coming from other cameras, however, like Canon, it pays to Expose the Histogram to the right (ETTR). Images do seem a bit too bright initially but highlight recovery is very good in post processing (or in camera) and shadow recover induces a lot of noise.All in all a very good camera but probably not for beginners as it does have a plethora of features (not found any many other cameras) and the menu system is not the easiest to nagigate through. OMSystems should bring a firmware update to bring it to OM-1 standard which is much better.

If I need it (for archtecture / static subjects), the 50mp high-res (handheld) mode also works a treat.There's a lot of talk about the preceived complexity of the menu system on this camera, but coming from a world of no menus on my film cameras, I never found it overly daunting and saved all of the common functions I use to the four banks of custom menus, which negates the need to go looking through menu options.The smartphone transfer via the (free) OI share app works well (for me). I shoot Raw and Jpeg and can download the Jpegs to my iPhone for instant editing and then work on the larger raw files when I get back to my studio.So, all-in-all, I'm very happy with this camera and would recommend you take a look if you're in the market for something small and lightweight, but with great versatility.

This is a great travel, starter, or second camera. It’s small and lightweight, with excellent autofocus. However, it lacks features for bird and animal recognition, unlike the OM-1. The sensor has phase detection and locks onto the subject quite fast (faster than my 2017 APS-C camera from a well-known manufacturer). It’s not a sensor that forgives mistakes, so it’s better to shoot at -0.7EV or -1.0EV to minimize the risk of washed-out highlights when shooting outdoors. It’s small and lightweight, with excellent autofocus. However, it lacks features for bird and animal recognition, unlike the OM-1. The sensor has phase detection and locks onto the subject quite fast (faster than my 2017 APS-C camera from a well-known manufacturer). It’s not a sensor that forgives mistakes, so it’s better to shoot at -0.7EV or -1.0EV to minimize the risk of washed-out highlights when shooting outdoors. If you’re on a budget and want to use long lenses like the 100-400mm zoom, I highly recommend the OM External grip to reduce strain on your wrist, even if you have to remove it to change the battery. As I'm getting older, I wanted a small travel camera instead of lugging my DSLR, but wasn't willing to give up much functionality. This camera fits the bill and I paired it with a Panasonic 14-140 lens.The whole setup only weighs about 1.5lb(699g) and fits into a small bag, which even has room for additional lenses should I want them. I'm looking forward to my next trip when I can leave the big backpack home.The downsides to this camera are twofold. 1) Because it is so small & I have large hands, I found it difficult to handle, After some practice and changing the eyepiece to the extended one, I'm able to maneuver my hands and face so they don't get in each other's way. This is the most customizable camera with the most functions I've ever seen, however descriptions are poor, the menu system complicated, actually finding things and understanding how certain functions are used are next to impossible. I was all set to return the camera until I came across the book,Mastering the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III, by Darrell Young & James W. Johnson. This is essentially the same camera; same body, same controls, same menus, with just a few slight changes. The authors explain things clearly,walking you through everything and give you their recommended settings to boot.
