A super versatile lens. Been shooting for over a year with this lens and my om-1. Birds, Elk, Deer extra. Prime lenes are great BUT, in the field, you need a good quality zoom lens to compose your subject quickly and efficiently before you lose the moment. No wasted motion with this lens, in a quarter throw of the very smooth zoom ring, you zoom from 150-400mm quickly with a constant f-stop of 4.5, flip the TC lever without taking your eye off the viewfinder and your at 500mm, F5.6. (With the om-1 and times two crop you have a crazy reach of 300mm-1000mm, 35mm equivalent.) I shoot handheld almost all the time, especially for birds in flight which is not a problem. If I know I have to wait out that nice buck, elk or bear, then is the only time, I put my gear on a ... MoreA super versatile lens. Been shooting for over a year with this lens and my om-1. The om-1 with its back lighted stacked sensor and this lens I don't have to worry about image noise anymore and most importantly I have put to arrest about switching to full frame. The only con to this lens is getting one in your hands. Hopefully the supply chain will get better. Enjoy the pictures

This is the most capable lens for bird photography and wildlife that Olympus has ever made since I started using Olympus equipment since the 70s. I have been using the 600mm F4 and the 40-100 F2.8 since they were available and with Olympus teleconverters. I have been very pleased by the IQ, and any limitations in IQ rest more on my technique than the lenses. The 150-400m f/4.5 has the jewel quality that other Olympus Pro lenses have. But, in this case, the inspiration of Yoshihisa Maitani shines through more than ever in the balance, lightness, and detail found in the design and manufacture of this lens. It is like Olympus made an Olympian effort to create such a lens - no pun intended! The lens has a larger footprint that the 600mm F4. It is taking some more time ... I have been amazed how consistent the IQ is and its three dimensional quality across the 300 to 1000mm range.I have noticed how bright the images are through the viewfinder.Maybe it is due to the increased magnification. I thank the staff of B&H for their professional service for handling my monthly inquiries over a six month wait and delivering it as quickly as possible once it arrived from Japan.

After a long wait I had this lens for about a week and took hundreds of pictures of birds and wildlife. It is balancing very well on OM-1 or EM1X. It is a perfect match with the OM-1 because of the improved subject recognition and autofocus. The autofocus speed is similar to the autofocus speed of the Olympus 300 mm F4 when using the focus limiters on both. The close focusing ability of the lens with half macro magnification is also amazing. The sharpness and contrast are also similar to Olympus 300 mm F4 Pro with the flexibility of a zoom lens. The weight is very similar to the weight of the Sony 200-600 mm (300-900 mm equivalent on crop body or large resolution sensor in crop mode) full frame lens, however the Sony lens is very front heavy and more uncomfortable ... The stabilization of150-400mm f/4.5 TC1.25X IS PRO is at least 2-3 stops better compared to the Sony lens. At 1000 mm equivalent it is possible to handhold the Olympus lens at 1/80-120s shutter speeds. With the 1.4x teleconverter the lens is still sharp, though the image quality and autofocus, particularly in low light, suffers a bit. With the 2x teleconverter the lens is usable, but the image quality, autofocus and stabilization significantly suffers.Overall, I really liked the lens and wanted to keep it. However, using this lens time to time I had blackouts in the viewfinder. OM digital solution support suggested to send the lens for checkup and repair. Instead I sent it back to B&H for replacement. The staff was very professional with the refund an exchange. Unfortunately, it is unpredictable how long I need to wait again for the replacement lens. It is quite frustrating that OM digital solutions is unable to keep up with the demand of their most expensive and probably most profitable lens.
I'm one of the fortunate few to own one of these stunning lenes. Game changer for wildlife m4/3rds using the om1 camera body, as it has been exhaustively talked about in other reviews. Here and elsewhere. I can confirm all is true about this lens. No negatives about this lens except the waiting time to receive one. One of the features that no one talks about with this lens, is its macro capability at a 1000mm. Stunning! This lens will focus from 1.3 meters. I shoot mainly wildlife, had this dragon fly as a still subject I decided to give macro a try using small single point S AF mode shot at a 1000mm about 2 meters from subject. Osprey shots were on C AF mode. the one in flight was at 1000mm f5.6, ss 3200, iso 1600, displayed on my laptop I have compared with other ... Amazing. By far my biggest investment in camera gear, and in my eyes putting to rest the indecision between going with m4/3 or FF gear.
I took some time for the lens to be delivered, 1st piece I receive (8 months after placing the order) had a manufacturing defect (chipped glass on one of the internal element). Returned and waited for replacement another 5 months. It was worth the wait! Very sharp even with engaged built-in 1.25x teleconverter. A bit heavier than 300 mm PRO lens but still suitable for my hand-held only approach to wildlife photography. The only annoying thing is that the tripod collar can not be removed, but at least it's easily adjustable so it makes for a good handlebar. The focus and zoom rings are great and move smoothly with just right resistance.
This lens feels like the swansong of a great optics and photography company. It is the penultimate of what m43 can do and offer for a photographer. Everything about the lens is superlative. First of all the choice of focal length and F-stop. Perfect for birding. In the months prior to its arrival I often wondered why not a 400mm or 500mm fixed focal length, but the zoom is so much for practical. And why not F4 - because it would be too heavy. And why not F5.6 - it would be too slow for the many low light situations you encounter when you are birding.Everything about this lens exudes quality. Olympus told customers to wait because perfection takes time, and this was certainly the case here. The zoom ring is super smooth, the tripod foot fits so well into its positions, and the camera mount fits without any play. Just perfectly tight.Image quality is beyond par in the world of m43. Photographs seem like full-frame. I compared m43 birding options for a friend, and the 150-400mm came out way on top, followed by the 300mm, even with the 1.4x converter, then by the 200mm Panasonic, with the 2x converter, and the two 100-400mm zooms came in last, not by much, but nevertheless. They were pretty even. I remembered the Panasonic to be less sharp, but there wasn't much of a difference to the Olympus. When compared to my old favorite the 150-600mm Sigma on the Nikon D500, the Olympus 150-400mm with the E-M1X is a notch better. However, Sony's recent 200-600mm or the 600mm/4 with the Sony A9ii are superior, but also heavier. With all the hype for mirrorless, Nikon's D850 or the D6 with their 600mm or 800mm primers are still superior in low light. Just thought I'd mention. Nevertheless, when it comes to a combination of light weight, perfect handling, and outstanding sharpness, Olympus wins hands down. Well done, Olympus! Wish you another 100 years!
I bought into the whole Olympus system to have rugged yet lightweight equipment. Before purchasing this lens I had an Olympus macro 60mm 1/2.3, Olympus 12-40mm1:2.8 pro, Olympus40-150mm 1:2.8 and the Olympus 300mm 1:4 IS pro. I was happy with this set-up and have taken it to Europe, Iceland, Antarctica and Africa.I love wildlife photography. When this lens came out I started watching the review videos. It sounded too good to be true. I ordered it and expected to wait 6 months to a year. Enough time to decide if it was a crazy idea. I got it in 4 months. I've now had the lens almost a month and am using it a lot. The clarity and detail is beyond expectation. The first day i had it I went out to shoot birds, but none to be found. I kept seeing dragon flies, so thought i would try them.. My first shots were handheld, and I was amazed by the results. The detail is truly incredible.Using it with the Oly OMD EM1 MarkIII it weighs 6 lbs. The last couple days I tried it with a monopod and it worked well. The built in TC works seemlessly. I am excited and happy to try to test its limits.
Paired with the OM-1, this kit provides the perfect combination of size, weight and capability when on the road. The build quality is superb as are the optics. The zoom and built-in teleconverter provides flexibility as the distances to subject change. The improved AF on the OM-1 make the most of every opportunity. The image below was captured on the Rio Frio in Costa Rica from a boat.
Easy to carry, super sharp, get real candid pictures with M1X. Using a red dot sight helps. Better than FF competitor's that need fiddling of [i] settings and other focus rigmarole. Maybe I should keep it a secret for competitive reasons :)
