It's an external battery charger, even charges two batteries (if you HAVE two) equally slowly at the same time. My only gripe with the charger (it's ok that it uses any old USB-C PD source) is that instead of turning all lights ON steady when it's done, it turns all lights off. So, the battery is either fully charged or the cat pulled the plug out.The battery is fine and lasts a long time in the OM-1. Unfortunately, most of us wouldn't be caught dead without a spare battery, and OM Systems hasn't delivered the promised second battery to (apparently, a lot of) OM-1 preorders , and certainly not for purchase separately. The SBCX-1 kit was $220 when I bought it. With a battery going for $100, that makes the charger $120. That's crazy money for a simple battery charger.The charger works well when plugged into an adapter with high-speed Power Delivery (PD) functionality, charging a battery in 1 to 3 hours depending on initial charge. The battery and charger both work well, and I have no complaint about their functions. My complaint is that OM System should have included a basic charger as part of the camera purchase. A double charger can be handy if you are shooting a lot in a day so there can be a place for it, but it also takes more space if you are trying to maximize space in a camera pack. For those reasons the dual charger seems more appropriate as an optional purchase for those that have expanded need. Also, there is no excuse for having to use the cord that comes with the camera in order to operate the charger. What happened to the good old days when Olympus provided a charger, cord included, as part of the camera purchase?
This is the new OM Systems, external, 2 battery charger for the BLX-1 battery. This battery works in the new OM Systems, OM-1 camera, possibly in their future cameras as well. It charges the batteries fairly quickly. Obviously, from this photo you can see it charges either 1 or 2 batteries at a time. The light comes on while charging, once the batteries are charged, the light goes off. In my opinion it offers out of camera charging and allows you to carry fully charged batteries.
There's really not much to say about a charger except that it charges the battery. This charger does that and it works fine. However...For the price of this charger, I would think that they'd include an adapter so that the charger could be plugged-in and used, or at a minimum, the required USB-C cable. They don't include either of those items and rely on your using the charger and cable that came with the camera. For an item that costs $150, I think that's ridiculous!!
"But off-brand batteries are cheaper!" Yes they are. But when something goes wrong you know who will get the blame. Your cheapness. Sorry but it is true. Also off brand items have zero resale value. I opt to stick with Oly so everything in theirs except the memory cards. Great peace of mind knowing it will just work. Don't get cheap, it's not worth it. Buy the best and you only cry once.
Works as described, but OM Systems should include a charger with the camera. If you can continue charging the battery in camera, don't buy this charger. Another manufacturer is coming up with a charger and battery for $89.99. On top of the outrageous price, this charger is too big for travel. I would return it if I had kept the packaging, but I threw it away. Another example of a manufacturer milking its clients to the maximum.
It's nice to have a double battery charger although this one only charges one battery at a time. It does work fast. The 3 star rating is because neither, or any other battery charger, is included with the OM-1 camera. The camera is marketed as a professional level camera yet it gives no way for a working pro to recharge the battery and continue to use the camera. Why not include this or a single charger with the body and just increase the price to cover the cost.
What can you say about a battery charger...it works. The only thing I would change is...the lights show the progress of the charging, BUT WHEN CHARGED...they go out! MOST of my other chargers go the other way. As the charge builds, more lights appear and finally a green or a dedicated charged light appears. But, I have been working for a while with this and am growing to be okay with it. Lastly, the cord and wall plug for this device is much larger than it needs to be.
