I have now worn these twice to work. Day one I worked 9 hours inside a building with concrete sub floors and tile and I had no foot fatigue from walking through the building on standing for 3+ hours straight. Day two I was out in muddy/rainy conditions. I stepped in some shallow mud puddles but nothing too bad but I was worried that mud would get stuck in the upper material. Usually after a day of work in an environment like this we go to the car was rack and spray the mud and dust off our boots and that's what I did. With the high power of the spray, it got the 5 hour dried mud off the boot and a bonus no water penetrated the boot. My feet stayed dry and warm in 40 degrees Fahrenheit weather. Unfortunately I came back with slight pain in the arch of one foot that gets aggravated when wearing my normal work boots on different terrain. Wearing these boots for two days I've felt no discomfort which is allowing my foot to slowly heal now that is December. The cons:The only con is it looks more like a tennis shoe than a hiking boot or work boot, so I don't know how long I will get away with wearing them at work. Also I may have to work with it more but so far the tongue of the hurts the front of my leg when I try to lace it all the way up to support my ankle. I'm not sure it the tongue is to thick or I have to find that sweet spot.

After wearing these around town and hiking I have a few initial impressions.First off is fit and comfort: I usually wear a 9-9.5 in hiking boots, so I decided to order a 9, as I plan to use these for shorter day hikes where thick socks are unnecessary. The fit is very similar to my La Sportiva Pyramid boots; theyâre fairly narrow and donât have a lot of room in the upper portion of the toe box. I do recommend ordering ½ to a full size up, especially if you prefer wearing thicker hike socks or want to put in orthotic insoles. For testing and âbreaking inâ purposes I left the regular insoles in and they were very comfortable and easy to adjust the lacing system for a perfect, custom fit. The top lace grommets hold the laces in place so they donât slip when youâre adjusting the ankle fit. Initially, I got a hot spot on the outer midfoot. With a little wear and re-lacing it resolved itself a bit, but Iâm hoping this issue will go away once theyâre a bit more broken in. The description says they provide a âhiking-on-clouds sensation.â While I wouldnât use those terms, exactly, I would say that they do provide a nice bouncy rebound which helps energize each step, reducing fatigue and alleviating pressure on joints, especially downhill. Iâm also very pleased that the ankle section is ultra plush and doesnât rub uncomfortably on my surgery scars. Another pleasant feature of these boots is how incredibly light they are, both in weight and breathability, which is often difficult in waterproof shoes.Stability: I have terrible ankles so stability is extremely important. While not as stable as backpacking boots, these boots do offer a good amount of stability for day hiking. The sole is wide and sturdy and the ankle support does its job without limiting mobility. I, personally, would prefer more ankle stability, but it works well enough. Additionally, the sole is beefy yet cushioned, reducing the feel of sharp rocks and uneven terrain. I didnât have any heel slippage going up or down, which is a bonus for stability.Traction: Rocky desert terrain has a tendency to be slippery when rock and dust slide over each other, but I was impressed by how well these gripped both large boulders and teeny rocks downhill, likely due to the massive lugs. Looking at the lugs I was worried that rocks would get stuck, but by some sort of magic they shed rocks.Durability: I havenât had these long enough to really test their durability, but after quite a few rugged hikes they seem to be holding up very well and the color is still surprisingly bright.Waterproofing: These boots effectively shed light rain. I did test them by spraying them with a hose and they were totally dry inside so I believe they will effectively be good for stream crossings. One interesting note: While I was getting my plantar fasciitis looked at I noticed my orthopedist was wearing On shoes. He said he not only loves and recommends them for their comfort and performance, but he loves them so much that he bought a pair for every one of his nurses and assistants for Christmas (and I noticed they were all actually wearing them).

I am a bit conflicted about these boots. Personally, I don't like a stiff boot - I really prefer flexibility and movement in my hiking boots since I am not worried about ankle support. These seem quite bulky. However, they aren't very heavy, so that is a plus for them. What ultimately was the deal breaker for me was that the material that the tongue gusset is made out of creates a bulge in the shoe which rubbed on my ankle. It may not anatomically do that for some, but for me it was impossible to hike with. Otherwise I really liked many features of these and they are worth a try on.

I struggle to find good hiking boots that are also all black, which I require for work. This boot finally met my needs. It is waterproof and comfortable to wear all day. It took just a bit to break in the stuff tongue, then all was well. It is perfect for moderate temperatures. I make it work in the summer by wearing very thin socks. It wouldnât be insulating enough during cold winter conditions. I should stock up on these in case they stop selling them.
At first - Amazing. Most comfortable, best looking, lightweight, easy to clean..Like every other pair of On's I have had, they just didn't last. I paid $300 for these at the time, and within 7-8 months they had lost their waterproof capability and tread. I am not an extreme hiker and handled these with immense care, but On's shoes are just not made to last.A $100 pair of hiking boots can last nearly a decade but these, at 3x the cost, did not make it a year? I am super disappointed. I really wanted to like these.

Whenever I get hiking boots I always break them in around the house and on short walks. These were pretty stiff and needed a longer break in than my other shoes. Even after breaking them in and going for my first jike them them, the ankle area was still rigid. This is probably by design to keep the ankle stable. But for me it made it really difficult and uncomfortable to walk in. The ankle cover sits higher than most mid height boots and there is a very small amount of padding to them. The lace buckle at the ankle kept digging into my joint. This was the only real down fall to these boots to me. Otherwise, I like that they were lightweight and breathable. The material seems sturdy as well. Overall this is a cute, good quality boot. Just not comfortable for me.
These boots are certainly comfortable however, they are not the best for trekking or hiking distances that may take longer than 4 hours. These boots are also not for standing prolonged periods of time. I hiked a long trail that took us 6 hours to complete and the whole way back my ankle was killing me. The ankle bone on my right foot was aching so bad from rubbing against the shoe. Needless to say I wasnât very impressed. Theyâre cute and great for beginner and intermediate level activities but I wouldnât recommend these shoes for longer distances or all day wear.
Iâve had these for a little over a month and plan on using them on a camping trip in WA and then as approach shoes while going up 4000 ft on Mt Rainier. These are just as comfortable and provide fantastic ankle support, so I returned the Altras (to my surprise). I have been training in this boot for the past month and am not experiencing any issues with the tongue of the shoe as other reviews have mentioned. The shoes arenât too plush/comfy either, youâre not walking on straight foam. But theyâre very comfortable and I think the padding is a perfect amount.Yes, theyâre pricey. Iâve yet to try them out on the trail or test the water-proofness. Iâll probably use them in the bathtub to test it out đ other than that, Iâm very pleasantly surprised by these and theyâre worth the money!
The On Hiking brand is new to me, but consider me a fast fan! These boots are extremely light, but provide great support and traction on the trail. They are super comfortable, and this is not a given since I have a somewhat wide forefoot (depending on the item and manufacturer I sometimes wear a medium width and sometimes a wide width) and a bunion on my right foot, and these are a medium width, in my normal size shoe (I did not size up and these fit perfectly). Many hiking shoes and boots squeeze my bunion terribly, sometimes with an unfortunate seam placement, but these boots felt great from the first time I put them on in my house, through the several hikes I have used them for so far. These boots are extremely light, but provide great support and traction on the trail. Many hiking shoes and boots squeeze my bunion terribly, sometimes with an unfortunate seam placement, but these boots felt great from the first time I put them on in my house, through the several hikes I have used them for so far. The toe box is well-sized and well-shaped to allow some room for the toes to splay, and the material feels like it stretches a bit over the forefoot, and there are no misplaced seams that press on my bunion. These are the factors that have resulted in such comfort, but the boot also feels like it is hugging my foot, and with a medium hiking sock and optimizing the lacing, I have had no blisters and felt like the boot was secure and sturdy on my foot (no slipping). So, really, the boot fits my foot like a glove in all the right ways. The lacing system is pretty straightfoward for a mid ankle-high boot: the top two attachments at the bend of the ankle and above are easy to loop in or not use at all. I used them both and have tried different levels of snugness for different trails, and I have felt like the boot was very secure and provided my ankle and entire foot with excellent support. The tread needs a special mention here - it looks a bit like a monster truck! The manufacturer product page notes that the design 'makes sure you don't take the trail with you.' I wasn't sure what this meant until I took several hikes in moist to muddy conditions, and yet when I got back to my car, the soles of these shoes were practically spotless. I have never seen anything like this - I am used to my hiking shoes trapping some trail debris in various nooks and crannies and needing to brush them out. This is like magic. Also, I experienced great traction on rocks, roots and muddy patches of dirt trails. To recap, I am really impressed with the very light weight and yet great support and secure fit. I am thrilled with how extremely comfortable these boots are despite my foot issues that cause me to reject many hiking shoes. I am highly amused that somehow the tread is completely clean no matter the trail conditions. So I rate these boots as a winner and am excited to continue hiking in them for many miles to come.
