2nd faulty burner

In brief, has been hours of trying to get it to light using the igniter (spark). First burner did not spark. Was replaced with a second burner that sparks but does not ignite. I really want this burner to work properly. All of this reported with great detail including several videos. Also, when nearing completion of the cooking, the flame goes out...sometimes. This problem has not been reported.Just would like a properly working burner that doesn't go out sometimes. So far, disappointed with the natural gas burner. Not giving up, love the pizzas. Here's hoping a get a working burner soon.

I was really excited to finally get this add-on for our Karu 16. I first used it to convert the Karu to a second oven for Xmas cooking, and I found out that at minimum gas, it's about 400*F, which was handy for the potatoes, and didn't fluctuate too badly.Since then, I've used it a few times to make pizza. It gets up to about 900*F which is hotter than I was getting with wood (~750*F), requiring a little adjustment in cooking. But the reason I'm giving it 4 stars and not 5 is for how it flames at high heat - it just shoots big gas flames out toward the front, and they seem to stay pretty low over the cooking surface, and end up going straight out the chimney, to the point that I think they're heating the chimney more than the oven (the chimney will actually glow ... MoreI was really excited to finally get this add-on for our Karu 16. I have had a hard time cooking pizza to the same quality I have with wood. It feels like there's a ton of heat coming from the flames that are going right over the pizza (instead of licking the ceiling, as is the case with wood), leading to an overcooked topping pizza before the crust is cooked. Now maybe I just need to turn the heat down a little, but I believe that the direction of the gas flames emanating from this burner are to blame for the high heat on the pizza toppings, and less even heating overall. If I could point the burner up toward the ceiling, and laterally a little more, I think that would be perfect. I think I'll be going back to wood as when one considers the time it takes to get the Karu up to temp, whether that's gas or wood, all things considered wood is not that much more work.I will give it credit for creating more even heat front-to-back; turning the pizza in the oven is far less critical with the gas burner than with a wood-fire burning.Lighting is a little tricky as I did have one issue with excess gas buildup that was startling, but that was mostly user error.I really want to like it more, and maybe I'll fiddle more with it in the future, but wood and I had such a good thing going, I think I'll take this as a sign and revisit old school methods...

Have you improved this burner as mentioned was in the works?Kevin10 months agoHow can they keep selling these?I'm writing this review specifically for the gas--not propane—burner for the Karu 16. I was an Ooni fan until I upgraded to the Karu 16 in April 2022 with a gas burner that didn't work. After dozens of exchanges with Support and three replacement burners, I've since learned from Support that these burners have a manufacturing defect that prevent them from 1) lighting effectively, and more troublingly, 2) staying lit while trying to cook. The burner flames out intermittently while cooking. You have to relight it multiple times, and the more often you do it, the less reliable the flame becomes.None of the suggested troubleshooting steps have worked. I even followed Support's instructions to take these units apart to adjust the mechanisms inside--a time consuming job--to no avail. Ooni Support told me that "Engineering is working on the problem." They've offered me the only options they can really offer at this point--a refund, a different model of oven, or a propane burner. They told me they are keeping a list of customers like me who are waiting for the new and improved burner units to be manufactured and that I'll be alerted when that happens. But it's been four months. It feels like the Support team is in the unfortunate position of knowing these units are defective, but still having to talk people through these ridiculous steps while Ooni fails to get its act together and produce a working burner. Shame on you, Ooni. You should not continue to sell a product you know doesn't work. My recommendation is that you not buy one of these until you can be assured these problems have been fixed.LessReviewed on ooni.com

Burner's ignitor doesn't work and it turns off for no reason

Hello - I have been meaning to contact Ooni sooner but forgot because my family and I don't use your oven any longer because it does not function properly.Last year, we remodeled our backyard and though a pizza oven would be a great addition. After doing some research, we purchased the Ooni Karu 16 Pizza Oven and separately purchased the Karu 16 Natural Gas Burner. Both took months to receive due to supply chain issues (which we understood). Both took months to receive due to supply chain issues (which we understood). We received the oven first then the burner a number of months later. When we received the burner it worked well twice then the ignitor stopped working. I checked the owners manual and your site for some troubleshooting support but the suggestions were no help and decided that I would have to light the burner with a lighter (which was an inconvenience but not the end of the world). We then noticed that the burner would go out for no reason and would require us to re-light the burner to keep the oven heating. We would have to do this many times until we were able to get a pizza cooked. I made sure there was proper airflow and it was installed properly. Also, again, I checked the owners manual and your troubleshooting suggestions, YouTube, etc. but no luck.I attempted to contact Ooni but you provide no phone support any only allow for trouble tickets to be opened up which, in my opinion, is not good customer service.Overall, my family and I are quite disappointed in Ooni's products. We were hopeful to get a lot of use out of it this summer (pizza nights, parties, etc) but are choosing not to use it because of the troubles / frustrations we face every time. For now, the oven just sits on our countertop as a decoration...I typically do not provide product reviews but I thought this was worthy of sharing since we spent over $1,000 with your company (oven, burner, cover, peel, etc). We would be grateful should Ooni rectify this situation and provide us with either a new burner or a refund (our preference would be a new burner that worked properly). Unfortunately, like having the open a trouble ticket with support, I suspect this will go into a black hole with no response.

Dissappointed

This system does not light up properly. Left a message with the Ooni team with no response to date...very disappointed with Ooni support so far. Have over $1000 invested in this system with no responses to my concerns. The temp regulator that came with the system does not work either. The temp gun with infra red temp reader does not work properly. When the oven is at the right temp 750....the pizzas are great but I have to use my old device from my BBQ and gloves. Conclusion: you temp system is clearly poorly engineered and your gas lighter fails to spark enough to light the gas. Impossible to light, flame goes out
8 January 2023

I got a new Kari 16 with the gas burner attachment. The burner is very hard to light, seems like the spark only occurs about 1-10 times. Also, if you can get it lit, the flame goes out frequently no matter what air flow I adjust to. I’ve used 3 times now with two different propane tanks. Oven is completely level on calm days. Only worked well 1 out of 3 times. The first time it worked, but flame went out 3 times. The most recent time the flame went out just as I was about to cook pizzas for my daughters birthday party and could never get it to work again even after trying all the troubleshooting tips. Ended up ordering Pizza Hut which was a pretty big let down. Spent over $1,000 on oven and all the attachments. Bummer.

Relatively convenient
7 February 2023

The burner itself works as advertised and it is more convenient than using the standard firebox. There are some quirks though. The burner control know is at the rear of the oven. In my setup, I have the hose routed through some cabinets so it isn't easy to move the oven which means I have to reach around the oven to light it. It is a long reach. I've also never been able to use the built-in lighter to get it to light. I am still a novice, so I may eventually get it, but it isn't easy. I end up getting a long lighter and using it to light the oven. Also, the burner went out a couple of times. I finally realized that in needing to reach behind the grill from the front, I had inadvertently partially closed the flue of my oven. This was causing the flame to suffocate. ... MoreThe burner itself works as advertised and it is more convenient than using the standard firebox. There are some quirks though. If you have the oven in a place where it is easy to access the rear of the machine, however, it is probably a much simpler experience than mine.On a different note, I needed to contact Ooni customer support about an issue and they were very responsive and helpful. They do a good job standing behind their product.

Replacement Burner
20 March 2023

First, I cannot say enough positive things about my experience with OONIs customer service. The communication was timely, on point and honest about the issues in design and OONIs plan to replace with new design. In addition, the fact that OONI not only did not make me return the old design, but provided the new design burner for no charge was "the right thing to do" as far as I am concerned. I have used the new burner several times since receiving. It still seems to be a little difficult to light using the auto light feature, but has lighted after a few tries. Also, it appears to be staying lit during entire heat up process and during cooks, which was another issue. As a side note, we have also found your web site, and dough calculator and recipies to be very useful.

Still not better. Sub standard, expensive problem.
8 July 2023

Now that summer is here I brought my Karu 16 outside. This is the same problen I had with the first natural gas burner which you replaced. The replacement took many months (as it was out of stock) during which I could not use the oven. As with the original burnwe it shuts itself down at about 860 degrees F. I can not get the stone hot enough to cook a pizza. I have had the oven since 12-2021 and have never been able to use it. This is unacceptable especially considering the price I payed. I find it hard to believe this is not a unique problem given that I have had 2 faulty natural gas burrners with the same problem.. My friend has the same oven with a propane burner. He does not hace this problem. Should I switch. If you can not make thios right I want my monewy back!

Was ** but now ***** with the new Karu 16 glass door
7 July 2022

Tons of issues with the Fire Safety Device (FSS) turning off at high temperature. After servicing it per Ooni instruction it wasn’t better (involved tearing apart the whole burner). Also many issues with the the lighter/striker ever working, closely following their instructions and repositioning the probe. I almost always have to use a lighter. After months of issues with the FSD inadvertently turning off the oven, finally figured out you cannot run the burner with the door closed (needs to be slightly open) or it shuts off at high temp. Works if you just keep the door ajar on the hooks- and no it doesn’t matter the vent or chimney settings of the door is closed. The door is pointless with the gas burner.Ooni then came out with the new Karu 16 glass door in June ... MoreTons of issues with the Fire Safety Device (FSS) turning off at high temperature. After servicing it per Ooni instruction it wasn’t better (involved tearing apart the whole burner). Also many issues with the the lighter/striker ever working, closely following their instructions and repositioning the probe. Clearly the NG burner has issues with ventilation. Do yourself a favor and get the new door accessory if you are getting the NG burner, it’s the only way the burner ever stays lit and holds high heat for fast pizza cooking. Now it works like a charm.Thankfully Ooni support and R&D supported me well, but the design Should never have made it out of engineering or QA.
