After using my Karu 12 for good few months, I can confirm that I am extremely pleased with the overall quality considering the price. I moved from having a brick oven, to the Karu 12 when redesigning outdoor kitchen and I am really happy with everything so far.It takes a good 25-30 minutes to get to a solid 430c. After a cooking a few pizza's you do see the stone temperature drop and you do often need to then wait for it to get back up to a good cooking temperate again.I have also since switched from using wood, to using propane. However, this was only due to the soot gathering on the roof of the gazebo where the oven is based. I have caught myself a few times and even with gloves, it's easy to catch your forearms. I doubt this would be an issue if you're using the oven out in the open, as you will likely be able to reach or walk around without issue.I'd still give it a 5 star rating, it's an amazing bit of kit for the value!

For speed and convenience, gas is the way to go but I wanted the flexibility to use wood if I wanted to invest more time in cooking.I’m also a bit of a nerd, and since everything is incredibly expensive I worked out the figures to recoup the cost of the oven after making 22 plain pizzas. Final cost for a 12” works out to about $1.55 in ingredients, fuel, and time.First, set up and heating are easy and takes about 15 minutes total. I’ve developed a system for making the pizzas and having them prepped so I can turn 5 or 6 pies in the oven in about 25 mins. The first time may take a little longer as you stumble through, but have fun learning what works for you. It includes instructions and their YouTube has plenty of videos, but it’s almost intuitive. In addition, I had a question about an instruction in the manual and emailed CS; their response came a few hours later with a focus on ensuring everything on the oven was working properly. Kudos to that team, as there’s still plenty of CS out that always seem annoyed you’re asking for help. What I especially love is that I control what goes into and on the pies. I make my own sauce, I cook and prep my own toppings, and I can control the level of seasonings added. I prep all my dough once per month and then freeze/defrost as needed. The kids have even volunteered to jump in and help make dinner! The next step is to experiment with Sicilian pizza and then cooking more than pizza in there. You’ll need are a thin peel to pull and turn the pies. I’ve used both metal and wood and feel that the wooden peel I have is too bulky to pull a pie. I also purchased an infrared thermometer at harbor freight, but after doing this a few times you may be able to develop a feel for how hot the oven is so I’m not sure it was worth the money to buy one; I now only use it to check the temp after preheating. However, YMMV and if it makes you feel more dialed in with control, have at it.If you’re interested in taking control of your pizza and ingredients and turn a weekend dinner into a fun and creative family event (and ultimately saving some money on food over time) then I highly recommend investing in a product from Ooni. They have something to suit everyone’s need and at a competitive price point with other manufacturers. They also offer a 15% military discount, which is incredibly generous. Cheers!

Can’t beat it for the money
1 May 2023

Bought mine today at academy. I previously was just getting by with a haphazard brick oven that leaked heat and was just stacked together. You know the one from YouTube that said to buy 47 red bricks and two big slabs. The bottom slab cracked and I decided to buy this. The improvement is indescribable but I’m gonna try.The ooni is incredibly efficient. The brick stacked oven I had made previously burned through over 20lbs of seasoned firewood and barely cracked 700 degrees. The ooni, burns at 900 plus with just 3 lbs over 4 pizzas. The design is rock solid. The hanger on the back for the fire door is perfect. There is plenty of space for a medium pizza and turner peel gives an easy time with the turn.I absolutely love this thing and for the money you can not beat ... MoreBought mine today at academy. We’ve had traditional pizza ovens in the past - the Ooni Karu multi-fuel is on another level! It is a fantastic piece of kit. Firstly, you can use charcoal or kindling (we use a mix of both) and can be used with gas. We intend on getting the gas kit for using over winter times. As we enjoy being outside in the snow! With this model you are getting the best of all worlds But at a much more affordable price simply because it’s smaller. Who cares. It takes about 2 minutes to make a pizza - so being 12 inch not 16 inch makes no difference to us! Except we saved about £400! A friend introduced us as her sister has one, they now do too - and I can honesty it’s a game changer for outdoor eating. We have the carry case for storage. A friend introduced us as her sister has one, they now do too - and I can honesty it’s a game changer for outdoor eating. We have the carry case for storage. It’s easy and quick to set up each time. It reaches temperature by the time I’ve brought out the dough balls and toppings. I recommend getting a flour shaker for a dusting onto the pizza paddle before you place your stretch dough and then top. It means a really smooth transition into the oven. Easier than a hand dusting which gets clumpy and too much flour. I keep tubs of pizza sauce and chopped toppings in the fridge. I make my own dough and store as balls in the freezer. So a quick pizza for tea, really can be just that! There is little mess as it burns efficiently. The ashes can be easily removed and discarded into the roses! It is heavy to lift but you would expect that! We bought our own heat gun and it is useful - also recommend. We bought the cleaning brush but haven’t really needed it, yet. Overall, top product. Recommend. Family of 5, UK.

It definitely takes a lot of getting used to and playing around with make a good pizza. (I've yet to make a GREAT pizza.) I can't seem to get the oven even up to 800 degrees, let alone the 900+ they claim it can get to. I bought the gas burner for this but have yet to try it because I want to perfect the wood burning pizza so we can use this at our beach club (that only allows coal/wood grills). I am a bit disappointed that Ooni then came out with a larger wood burn try just a couple of weeks after I purchased it, obviously recognizing that there is fault with their design that keeps it from getting as hot as they claim. But if you want this larger burn tray, you have to purchase it for $30. I think that is not really fair.Aside from the grill not getting hot enough, one of the other issues I have is with the launching of the pizza. I have used a bunch of flour but that launch of the first pizza into the oven is always the trickiest and often makes a mess in the oven. I need to try the perforated peel and see if that makes a different. If I had to do it again, I would also buy the 16 inch grill, as the 12 is sort of small.I was also bummed that only a few months after this, Ooni came out with a new version of the karu 12 with the glass door that doesn't come off and a thermometer on the side, two features I really think would help change my mind for this review to at least 4 stars, perhaps even 5. I purchased the thermometer for the oven, but I would've liked to have one on the oven too.

This thing is utterly fab. Used a combination of Beech wood and Lumpwood Charcoal. First go was making four pizzas - normally a lovely family activity, and this time even better because it somehow seemed less pressured than timing a pair of pizzas in our electric oven and having to keep the surfaces clear. A lot of fun and perfect (apart from my wife who decided to put an egg on hers, and the yolk launched into the end of the oven and cremated itself). But all the pizzas were great!Second use last night was in making Steaks using a cast-iron ridged pan I bought secondhand. That worked really well, but the Ooni cast-iron ware might be better as you need to be able to shut the door to keep the heat in, which you can do with the detachable handles on the Ooni plates ... MoreThis thing is utterly fab. Even so it was great not to have the kitchen full of smoke from the searing, as normally happens!Lastly I'm totally amazed that the Ooni uses very little fuel - a big handful of lumpwood and a couple of wood lengths to keep the flames going. I love this thing and wish I'd bought one ages ago!

I purchased my Ooni Karu 12 about six weeks ago. I bought the accessories: metal peel, propane burner, infrared thermometer and carry case. I love this oven. Hands down, best thing I have ever thrown money at. I watched several YouTube videos before launching my first pizza. Thanks to a little forethought and preparation, my launches are flawless and burnt pizza has never darkened the doorstep of my Ooni. I have had issues with the igniter. Sometimes it lights on the first try, other times not so much. The quality and design are great. It’s compact enough that I have taken it camping. Wood-fired pizza in the forest is delightful. Assembly was simple and straightforward. You do have to remove the pizza to rotate it with the Karu 12 model. There simply is not enough space to turn in the oven. The metal peel makes this task quick and easy. I made my first dough from the Ooni website, which was delicious. Bottom line: I adore this oven. I’ve always wanted a wood-fired brick oven and this is the next best thing. It’s portable and produces delicious pizza at lightening speed. 10/10 recommend.

Revolutionary Pizza oven
23 April 2023

It's a revolutionary kitchen oven, I use it to sauté onions, grill steaks, grilled salmon, make Ciabatta, and awesome biga style pizza. It's easy to clean, lightweight, and easy to manage flames. It does take more than 15 min for the half inch pizza stone to heat up to 750 deg. The temperature drops to 500 degrees after the first bake because all that heat is transferred to the dough. I push burnt embers onto the sides of the fuel container to make room for new wood, and it'll take some time to heat up the stone again to 700 degrees. I also put metal shims to elevate the pizza stone close to the flames, and that works well. The oven is an amazing piece of gear for home baker's that long to bake artisanal breads anywhere, anytime.

Superb product, superb company. The Ooni marketing and digital teams deserve lots of plaudits for the resources that are on offer post purchase. UI and UX of the app and website are brilliant. The production value of all videos; content, style and message are a perfect match for that particular part of the user journey. The product (oven) itself is simple to use, robust, portable and looks stylish. The Karu 12 allows for wood, charcoal and gas fuels but I've found wood to be the easiest to use in multiple settings due to it's availability e.g. home garden, camping, wherever. Wood does take a little more effort in terms of making sure the burner is stocked to keep the rolling flame going but if you use good wood e.g. oak this burns longer making oven management ... MoreSuperb product, superb company. Overall though this doesn't detract from how good/practical the Karu 12 is.
