Not sure a review is even necassary as I dont see these available on REI anymore but here goes. The bottom line is, I disagree wiht some of the negative comments on here, but the glaowing five stat reviews on the Oru site are a bit over the top. The Oru brand accessories are over priced, buy generic like float bags and such. Stabilty is pretty darn good too, its does not feel tippy and has a second stage on its side. I would buy again and would even conider a Cost IF I could get it at REI. So why the 3.5? The company, because lets face it your reviewing a company as much as a product when you pay this much, the warranty is lacking, they dont offer free shipping but worst of all is the customer support. So you may never have an issue but if you do, your kinda on your own and the old REI guarantee (fir good reason) is gone.

I wish it fit better and the straps were easier to put in place. One more thing, I ordered two paddles and the parts didn't quite snap together perfectly. I had to sand down the ends of the poles so that the pins would snap into the pin holes. One of the locks for paddle length adjustment isn't tight enough and the paddle length slips in use.

So, my background is owning the Bay, it was a good Kayak but for wanting a little more room, better tracking, better price and being in stock at REI id still have that boat. But I returned it and purchased this boat. I have read the other reviews and frankly i'm scratching my head. I will fully admit 'm not the most experienced paddler, id say intermediate at best. But, other than a few peeves if you will in think this boat is excellent for price and convenience. I recently took it out in Resurrection Bay, Alaska, if you are not familiar there are extreme tides, it gets very windy, there is a large amount of vessel traffic and it gets quite choppy. I paddled for about six hours, it tracked as good as one can expect for no ruder or skeg. As I returned the weather got bad, decent size swells and waves crashing diagonally across the boat. It stayed up right and cut through the waves flawlessly, It felt plenty rigid to me and never seemed to be in danger of coming apart. The seat, yes it could be better and I need to order another cushion. It has tons of space and once you get good at at it, you can assemble and disassemble in a jiffy to access your cargo. If you watch Youtube videos, you will see older or euro versions of the boat and frankly 'm not sure where the features of those boats went as they seem far superior. Orange markings making for better visibility, a hatch to access items faster and most of all what appear to be straps that help hold the boat together side to side. Are they necessary probably not but its good for peace of mind. I don't know what other paddlers do, but I dont care to paddle in weather much worse than I encountered I suspect not many do, so what the other reviewer described during rescue I can only imagine. What this boat does do thus why I purchase it though is eliminate the need for a rack, allow me to take it around the world, Iceland, Mexico, Lake Tahoe, Kodiak Alaska. In some categories it's not as good as a rigid boat but in others, like weight and portability no contest. There are of course other options like inflatables, been there done that or some other brands more expensive of course. If 'm sound like im saying buy this boat, here are my cons, as I stated in my review of the Bay, I have huge issues with Oru the company, customer service is non existant, key among them. I would not consider buying any Oru item other than from REI for a great many reasons. Another is the way that advertise this product lets just say the booklet and the website greatly contradict one another and you can see what I mean. The assembly portion where you places the post into the back of the seat back is a pain. All in all for what I need and want this is the boat and exceeds my inflatables by lightyears.

Easy and comfortable

I waited a coupling years to buy the inlet after seeing my first one unfold at a small lake and it has been a great decision. I was sure I’d use it much but it’s so easy and a nice cooler weather alternative to paddle boarding to get near wildlife and nature.Yes, people notice you with this at about the level of getting noticed if you’re out walking a good looking dog. You just have to enjoy the attention since people are curious and probably envious as they haul their heavy kayaks back to their car roof.Previously I’ve rented hard kayaks with spray skirts and rudders and was limited to where rentals existed. The seats often felt uncomfortable/unsupportive on my bad back and limited my desire to go out. so I wasn’t sure how this would steer and feel to sit in. ... MoreI waited a coupling years to buy the inlet after seeing my first one unfold at a small lake and it has been a great decision. The seats often felt uncomfortable/unsupportive on my bad back and limited my desire to go out. so I wasn’t sure how this would steer and feel to sit in. We’ll, it’s incredibly comfortable. Between being able to raise the seat back and adjust the footbar - I felt no lower back tension. I tested it on a calm lake and then for an hour long paddle in the lake Washington ship canal with a little current and some wake. It handled well and only at the end did I start to feel like I’d been sitting too long. I ordered the extra cushioned seat to try next. Overall, my priority for a kayak was light weight, compact size, easy of assembly, fun to use and the Oru inlet checks all those boxes and looks beautiful. I’ve just ordered a second so my spouse can come with me. fits in Honda accord hybrid trunk.

Inlet, perfect travel kayak

I purchased an Inlet a couple of months ago to test the viability of using a folding kayak over roof-hauling a rigid kayak all the way to South Florida as I have often done. I'm a pretty heavy paddler so I was curious to see how the sub-10 foot Inlet would compare to my 13+ foot Liquid Logic Deuce Coupe sit-on-top.The Inlet was amazingly easy to setup (even the first assembly went quickly) but the real test was on the water & the Inlet proved to paddle far more like a rigid kayak than I expected. For a short, beamy kayak it tracks quite well & paddles very easy; it takes little time or effort to get the boat up to speed. The Inlet proved far superior to my Stearns two-person inflatable kayak & the folded boat is no larger than the uninflated Stearns. The Inlet proved far superior to my Stearns two-person inflatable kayak & the folded boat is no larger than the uninflated Stearns. Of course assembling the Inlet is much, much quicker than the inflatable.Being a heavier paddler I wondered how the Inlet would fare when getting in & out of the boat but it's quite strong when assembled, far more so than one might think for a fold-up kayak. Since the goal was to test the Inlet to determine if it would prove satisfactory (it was & then some) my thought had been to purchase the longer Beach LT for me & have my spouse, who paddles much less, use the Inlet but the Inlet performed so well I decided to go with another one & save a few $ as well as making hauling in a vehicle easier by having two boats with the same folded dimensions. The Inlet makes for a great travel kayak, especially if one is flying.

Love the oru inlet. Just bought two as gifts for my child's family. Can't use them right now in the Northeast, unfortunately.Unfolds, after practice, in the 5-10 min as advertised. But refolding takes 15-20 minutes, including time to dry and clean. Have never been able to get it quite as compact as original, but at least it still fits in the box and stands on end. Having flats on the folded ends are brilliant to minimize floor space in storage. It's not quite stiff enough to push one hand on the outboard side and get out onto a dock.I've never had training other than your videos, but probably intermediate level experience for using on calm waters.

I live in a small city rowhome and drive a Nissan Versa so owning a kayak was out of the question until now. I have the Bay ST and yes, putting it together takes some practice. If you make a mistake, be prepared to take it apart and start again, with people watching. :) The other reviewer is totally correct - it's sooo much easier putting it together when it's warmer. I went out in the morning at 30ish degrees F and it took me forever due to the plastic being so stiff. She did great on all three, tracked well, super easy to maneuver, and cuts quietly through the water. The Inner Harbor was partially frozen and it handled this with no problems. Living in the city, I usually have to put it together in some weird spot and carry her down to the launch, this is not a problem at all. It's crazy lightweight and easy to lift. Getting in and out is definitely a little bit trickier than your standard kayak. Being so lightweight is tends to bob a bit more. You just have to be a bit more thoughtful about your movements. I'm 5'5" and 140 lbs and I'm very comfortable in it. I haven't used the floats yet since I've been on flat water, I would definitely use them if I was dealing with more boat traffic or higher winds. If you buy the paddle, it actually fits inside the boat when folded. I have the phone dry bag too and love it. Super smart design for the water. I look forward to traveling with this kayak and not stressing about boat rentals or lugging heavy equipment.

Sleekest folding boat out there

My girlfriend and I each bought an Oru Bay ST two years ago. Neither of ours have had any leaks or quality control problems. While the Bay St doesn't assemble quite as quickly as the manufacturer would have you believe, it folds down really quickly after use. The fact that something which looks like an oversized suitcase can transform this way into a kayak at all is actually impressive. Once assembled, it paddles fast, handles nicely, and tracks straight. The cockpit opening is a bit small for someone my size (5'11", 180 lbs.) to get in and out of, but there's plenty of room for long legs once inside. And you will likely want some additional padding for the seat bottom. I recommend a Skwoosh gel seat pad, which is more comfortable than the additional "seat wedge" ... MoreMy girlfriend and I each bought an Oru Bay ST two years ago. After searching for a few weeks last year, we acquired two Bay ST kayaks. We've tried inflatables in the past, but found them too difficult to navigate. The Bay ST kayaks are perfect for city dwellers like us, who don't want to risk a fallen roof rack but still have a passion for water sports. They fit perfectly in our SUV's trunk (both kayaks) and we've been taking them on camping trips and day trips. The portability and easy storage make Oru an ideal choice for those who want to hit the water at any time of day, without being limited by kayak rental facility operating hours. In terms of quality, these kayaks are sturdier than expected, even in choppy waters and strong winds. Hope this helps.
