There are a great many things to love about the Oru: it's lightweight, ingenious design, and incredible transportability on anything from a small car to an airplane are reason enough to love it. That said, there are some real drawbacks. The light weight means that a stiff wind makes paddling and holding a line a serious chore, the seat is poor, though a bit better with the gel pad, it is far more prone to damage than a regular kayak, and for my specific model (Bay ST) doesn't hold a line as well as other 12' kayaks I've used nor is it very stable. It is fantastic fun to light up at night, and draws conversation nearly everywhere I take it. For me, another product serves me better, but I'm keeping the Oru for airplane travel and night paddles.

Needs a way to tuck away straps. Seems like a lot of money for what it is, I have paid less for technical backpacks from top brands that have lots more durability and features.Seems like there needs to be a better way to secure straps. Otherwise it will be destroyed on airline baggage belts.

Anytime you need to carry your Oru more than a short walk to launch it, use this pack. The Beach LT is a little tight, but it is worth the effort to pack it. What is really amazing is how comfortable and stable a pack this size is. All the adjustments makes this pack even better. The only thing is that you do look odd carrying it. Even the nice looking models in the product photos sort of look like pretty sherpas.

I've had the Beach LT out twice now. I've felt surprisingly comfortable and stable within the kayak. It seems to track well. The Beach Splash Deck I bought, for me, seems like a total waste of money. It is so short it doesn't even cover my feet. The constant sale emails and texts are also irritating but overall I am enjoying the kayak, it's ease of setup and transport were the major selling points for me.
As I have written previously, with no response, your company’s main focus is on sales, sales, sales.No where in your assembly manual or video is the use of a mandated lubricant used. Secondly, the video Sport model is much more flexible than mine and the video makes assembly look too easy.Trust me, I am very mechanically blessed.You need focus on your businessmodel!!!Much too hot to have used my kayak.Know I will enjoy!
I love my Oru pack. It’s really well made and it’s been on 3 flights now. But as great as it is there could be some improvements for long travel purposes, but for simple carrying purposes it’s great. If you need to walk inclines, declines, long distances, uneven surfaces, etc., with the pack it’s not a problem. I’ve also flown with my Oru internationally, using the pack, and I didn’t have any major issues. I made sure to tighten all of the straps and then I tied them to one another to prevent snagging.I also made sure to put place the zippers in the top position on the bag when checking it in and I had no issues with getting snagged or damage. We don't own a car (by choice), and you can't just bring a hard shell kayak to a taxi and be like "hey help me get this to the water", ya know?Enter the pack. It fits my Bay ST perfectly, with room for my 4 piece paddle, emergency pump, and heaving line inside the pack (which is great for travel too, as I'm planning to check this guy on airplanes from time to time too. The only thing I haven't yet tried to fit in is my PFD (I got the MEC fulcrum ww). I just put it on top of the pack under the compression straps for any trips I've done. There are also straps to pull the top in closer so it's not kind of levering out from your upper back and flopping around when you walk. It is *large*, as in, it sticks out at least a foot on either side of me, but it's basically only as big as the Oru itself. I take it on the bus with me to get closer to the water, then walk the remaining 5 minutes with the pack on. It's not light all together, but the pack really does a good job of distributing the weight comfortably and keeping your hands free. I do take it off to board the bus, as I would basically just smack everything on my way in if I didn't. But that's where the side carry handle comes in.If you've got a Beach, Bay, or Coast, this is supposed to fit your boat. It certainly fits my Bay. :)
Zipper doesn’t close, the kayak is a little too big. I tried removing the 2 carry straps that came with the kayak. It helped a little bit. I think maybe it’s because of the seat, seat back, and bulkheads being stored inside the kayak that makes it a little wider. The pack needs to be a little bigger to accommodate kayaks with the attachments inside.
I'm in my later sixties, overweight and out of shape, so this first excursion was a bit tiring. Getting in was OK, getting out was a challenge. With some practice it should get easier. It tracks reasonably well for a flat-bottomed boat and did resist wind gusts pretty well. I was on the feed end of a lake, so the water was calm, but the wind gusting. All in all, it paddled well and should be a lot of fun - with practice.
Well-constructed pack, feels durable and fit for purpose. Have used it once so far, on American Airlines, and the kayak and pack came out unscathed. One issue is the shoulder and waist straps are left exposed, with no way to tuck them away, which is a concern when being checked on an airline. I was able to use string and zip ties to batten them down, and to minimize the possibility of them catching and/or getting torn, but a more permanent solution would be good.
