I bought this a month ago for an 8 day trip in Yosemite. I was particularly excited about the breathability of the AG system, and was hoping for no more sweaty back!In order to fit that much food I carried a bear vault BV500. I was very pleased that this fit horizontally inside the pack. Thinking this was an upgrade to the exos with the mesh back panel let me say this about that. First off the hip belt is a real pain as it jams in your crotch when you’re lifting and shouldering the pack- tried to figure a remedy but no luck. Then i developed a burning irritation on my glutes that was only increasing no matter how i tried different adjustments until it came to the point i could no longer carry the pack because of the pain. Now here i am with an unusable piece of equipment many miles into the wilderness. Out came the knife and started to cut the elastic and under lying tension mesh on the lumbar support. I've just received the pack after much deliberation. I went to the MEC in Vancouver while on a work trip and spent about 2 hours in there trying on the various packs. Knowing I'll spend many hours wearing this I wanted to be sure it sat correctly, was comfortable and had all the space I'd need.I test packed it with a sleeping bag, pad, tent, stove, etc. just to get a sense of space and it will be more than able to fit my clothes and food and other miscellaneous supplies for my hiking adventures. It has the standard water reservoir space and good sized external pockets and pouches for water bottles, and other gear you want to keep handy.I appreciate the nicely padded harness and belts and the fact that the mesh keeps the bag directly off my back to allow air flow ... MoreI've just received the pack after much deliberation. **NOTE: This review is for the older-gen Atmos AG 65**I'm reviewing the older generation Atmos AG 65 but this review should hold up (at least as well as the pack).I purchased this after reading the reviews in Backpacker magazine to replace an ancient Gregory 5500 that had served its purpose but needed to be relegated to "Bug Out Bag" status. Here's what I've learned in the more than seven years of using my Atmos AG 65:Pros:- This pack truly holds you like a dance partner should. Main compartment, while just a big hole to put stuff in, is fine.- Internal reservoir sleeve is useful but if hiking where water is plentiful, the ability to ditch the bladder and use the two exterior stretch mesh bottle pockets (that you can actually reach while hiking) is sublime.- Don't want to use all 65L? You can ditch the lid and use the top flap as the new lid (even has buckle closures to do this!)- Hip belt is secure and the entire pack rests comfortably on your hips as this pack understands weight distribution far better than I do.Non-dealbreakers that subsequent iterations have either addressed or should:- Need stretchy mesh hip belt pockets (I think the newer-gens have them)- Shoulder strap needs a mesh pocket (I know this has been added--nice work by Osprey) to stash your phone, GPS, etc.Overall, this pack is great for a number of reasons, but the fit, distribution, durability (looks like I got it from REI yesterday after all these years and many, many hikes in rain, snow, and sunshine), and attention to detail make it, in my opinion, the best the market has to offer for the non-ultralighter.
I am currently hiking the appalachian trail. I sit at mile 145 eating breakfast on cheoah bald and my pack is toast. In about 70 miles the hip and should straps stretched out and i can no longer cinch either down to be snug where they need to be. The height adjustment for the shoulder straps is a good idea but in practice at the lowest setting i cannot bring them down far enough to touch my shoulders unless the hip pads compress around my hips limiting mobility. I am 5’11”- this pack should fit me fine. The plastic buckles to hold down the brain wore out and wont stay clipped so the brain now sits in my backpack. I have had two osprey bags before. Both exos 58 that i got rid of after several years of hard use. I liked the sipper pockets on the outside of this pack ... MoreI am currently hiking the appalachian trail. I use a OneTigris baker's tent (A-frame), which does not pack down small. So when I put that in the pack, it leaves only 50% of the volume available for food, clothes, and gear, which means that the effective volume I have available is 65L / 2 = 32.5 L and I still can carry enough dried food for 4 days, a cantine to boil water, and 2 t-shirst, 2 boxers, 2 pairs of socks, a rain shell, a sweater in the Summer, and a goose down ThermaRest sleeping bag. It is quite restrictive mounting the pack when fully loaded (15kg) as the waistbands are hard to stretch open to seat the pack and hold the shoulder straps at the same time.Lots of accessible pockets and stash zones. I am sure I will make good use of them as I get used to the pack.CONsNot so sure about the beefiness of the strap buckles; they seem quite flimsy against the ruggedness of the pack. Time will tell, but will custom fit better buckles in the future to assist with opening and closing with winter gloves.Not convinced yet with the floating lid. Overall not too impressed. The pack is pretty comfortable in the suggested weight range of 30-40 pounds, but for how heavy it is, it should be able to hold more weight. I'd trade this for the Aether or equivalent Gregory. When climbing Mount Rainier, I unintentionally had to help carry more of my groups gear, once over or close to the 40 pound limit, the frame would dig into my back (a huge negative). Why there isn't padding on the lower back portion of pack is beyond me. The mesh backing does ventilate well and the green color looks good, so it has that going for it. If the frame didn't dig into my back and it could handle 50 pounds, I'd keep it.

A blanket and some eating dishes. Next is finding a good pad pillow and some other small items i feel necessary. I have a decent amount of gear already but meet to fine tune and lighten up with the new pack. Only because i want to be more efficient. Highly recommend and encourage to look around and try out everything available to you at your local shop. Rei is very helpful and i talked with a few workers and customers about their experience and what they prefer. Amazing experience for sure. Thank you the bag is adjustable on the fly. Torso and waisted so if needed you can literally mach the adjustments on the fly with the pack on and in mid/full trekking without taking it off or stopping to do so. The airspeed anti gravity frame system on this pack is amazing. Cooling sensation from the amazing construction will ensure you stay comfortable with hot weather.
