I purchased the Osprey Sirrus 36 Back pack after extensive research. I have a 4 day hike planned for Machu Picchu and needed a back pack to comfortably carry my "stuff". I am a 5-2 female and this pack is perfect because it is specifically designed for women. The Design is perfect for my trip! the main compartment has a hydration reservoir sleeve and easy access zippering on the side in addition to the Main access at the top. There is another zippered mesh compartment underneath the top with great storage for easy access. There is another storage pocket with easy access on front as well. I love the feel of the breathable back panel that allows airflow and prevents pack from being "stuck to your back". My trip is not until September, but I have added weights and am training on various cardio equipment, elliptical and treadmill on inclines. Lots of pluses, mesh side pockets, rain cover etc.

This review concerns the Osprey Sirrus 36 size XS/X women's specific design pack.I own more than a dozen backpacks/daypacks from various manufacturers (ranging from expensive to cheap), and this is my favorite for something that can carry 20-30 pounds. First and foremost, it is the right size for someone my height, which I had not succeeded in getting in unisex packs or men's packs. With my gear in it, the pack weighs about 28 pounds, and despite the fact that my standard hike is 8 miles up and down a mountain with a significant elevation change, I scarcely notice that I'm carrying it, because it fits so well. This has become my default pack.Other features I especially appreciate:-- The zipper pulls are wonderful. This has become my default pack.Other features I especially appreciate:-- The zipper pulls are wonderful. Sturdy and round, they are very comfortable to pull and work better than any other pulls I've had on any other bags.-- The zippers work well -- no getting caught all the time.-- The trampoline back does help avoid overheating.-- The bottom outside zipper pocket (intended for a sleeping bag) gives me easy access to my rain gear, useful if there is a sudden shower, because I don't have to open up the pack and root around in it in a torrential downpour.-- The main compartment of the pack does have two access points, the top and the essentially the whole front of the pack, which helps if one wants to get something from the middle or bottom of the pack without taking everything out of it.Is there anything not to like about it? A few minor points:-- The color (green) is named "stealth gray." (It's so stealthy I never would have guessed it.)-- Apparently because of the trampoline back that moves the pack a little further away from my back, I cannot get water bottles (that I use for electrolyte replacement, instead of putting powder into a water bladder and creating a cleaning problem) out of the outside side mesh pouches when I am wearing the pack.-- The zipper hip/waist pouches (fanny packs) are too small for my cell phone with its external battery attached, too small for Clif Shot Bloks without bending the packages, etc., and are hard to reach when I am wearing the pack.-- Because it is hard to reach anything in the pack (see above) when wearing it, I am currently wearing a safari vest with the pack so that I have some items within easy reach (e.g., cell phone, Personal Locator Beacon, Garmin GPS, map, snacks, electrolyte replacement powder, pocket camera, etc.) For example, if the PLB were in the pack and I fell and couldn't get the pack off, the PLB would not do me any good. Etc.-- This pack shares a characteristic with most (but not all) other packs, which is that one has to essentially unpack the entire pack to get the water bladder in after filling it. This is inconvenient. All of the above said, I would not do day hikes with any other pack.

I usually don’t do reviews but I love this pack so much….a review was a must. Firstly I have been a hiker for many decades and move my packs up and slightly bigger each time as one eventually does not meet my needs. This has everything….big enuf for 3 L water….great pockets on side for small chairs if you wish and not waste inside storage space and convenient holders for hiking poles from front and back but hanging in front you do not have to ask a partner to put them way…I often hike with one and then go back and forth depending on the grade and steepness of ups/downs. This meets ALL my needs but the chap who works at REI SF in backpacks helped me figure out exactly what I was looking for based on all me requirements. Comfort…….back support and sizing is perfect. ... MoreI usually don’t do reviews but I love this pack so much….a review was a must. This pack has many great features and upon receiving it I was super pumped and thought it was the best pack ever. I wore it for one hike of about 1.5 hours with minimal weight and still thought it was pretty great. However the next day I loaded it a bit heavier (17lb total including the pack) and when I put it on I immediately felt pain where the bottom curved corners of the pack frame were pushing into the top of my butt. I had gotten bruises there the day before without realizing it. After continuing to hike and trying every which way I could think of to adjust the belt and other straps, I was sad to finally conclude that the hard curves that form the bottom of the pack frame just are not in a good place and there was no way to avoid them pressing into the top of ... MoreThis pack has many great features and upon receiving it I was super pumped and thought it was the best pack ever. I even went in to my local REI and had the pack experts look at it with me and they agreed that the bottom of the pack frame curves in unusually (compared to other packs) and is rigid and immoveable. Such a bummer.
One of the employees suggested me this pack when I was talking to him about transitioning into UL gears. While, there are certainly other packs that are much more lighter, they are very very expensive!! However, I am very happy with this pack. I didn't suffer from any shoulder pain (after proper adjustment) during my overnight trip. I did made sure my pack was no more than 25lbs (food, water, and other consumables) so I think that helped. Now, there are some features I wish this pack had. During my trip, it was raining. I had dry bags and a pack liner so the problem wasn't that my stuff got wet. The problem was that I wish there were mesh pockets to store my rain fly and rain jacket when the rain finally stopped! So, if you want a large mesh storage, this may be a deal breaker. I also wish the hip pockets were a little bigger so it can fit my phone (admittedly my phone is big, it's Samsung Note 20 Ultra).Anyways, still love this and I hope to go on my trips with this for many years to come.
It is my wife’s backpack and I found it very, very comfortable and great size to put all the essentials for my winter condition ascent including snowshoes and an ice axe. I took me a while to finally share this: there was an accident at a 14ers and a skier died. He took his last breath while I was giving pressure to his injury and his body was on my right lap. The medic didn’t make it in time because of the location and some people tried their best to help, 4 of us lift the deceased to the helicopter. I didn’t realize some of my gears are covered in blood until I got home, I threw away my gloves and some stuff, I was be able to clean my shell jacket but I wasn’t be able to clean the foamy shoulder straps and hip belt so I contacted Osprey online but after I fill out ... MoreIt is my wife’s backpack and I found it very, very comfortable and great size to put all the essentials for my winter condition ascent including snowshoes and an ice axe. I called and they confirmed they received it and Damien (the Osprey guy) ask if there’s any issue with the parts and I explained what happened, long story short is that I don’t want my wife and I wear something that reminds us of the tragedy. Osprey decided to replace the entire backpack at no cost. Osprey products are great in quality and their back system is the best, they also have compassion. Therefore, I put Osprey as priority when I recommend a backpack.
This was my "gateway pack" into Ultralight backpacking. It is a heavier pack but with great suspension/support like my 'classic' larger Ospreys. The things I would change on this pack? Hip pockets are too small for my iPhone to fit well, the water bottle pockets could be a bit roomier, and I miss the mesh outer pocket. That being said, I have put this pack to the test and pushed it to it's limits and it has held up great. It has traveled hundreds of miles with me on thru-hikes (I have a lot of UL gear and strategically divide/share gear with my backpacking buddy) so our base weights and gear size are pretty minimal. There are times I could use a few more liters of space on my long trips when doing longer food or water carries, which is why I will be upgrading to a ... MoreThis was my "gateway pack" into Ultralight backpacking. I think if you intend to use this backpack as your carry on or just as a very expensive overnight bag you'll be fine. If you want to use this outdoors and plan on using a bladder, I would avoid this bag like the plague.Everything related to hydration is poorly designed. I carry a full pack including a 2L bladder. The pocket for the hydration bladder is quite large, so expect your bladder to slip down. There is a strap to hold the bladder up though. The pass through for the hose is EXTREMELY tight. So small, that it has knocked the nozzle of my hose off and spilled my water twice. Not only that, but the pass through is also so small it puts too much pressure on the hose which actually prevents the water from passing through the hose easily. Not only that, but the pass through is also so small it puts too much pressure on the hose which actually prevents the water from passing through the hose easily. Lastly, because the hose pass through is so tight, it rubs up against the hose and squeaks with ever step. Oh, wait, also there's very little give to the bands on the actual shoulder straps so unless you have a super streamlined nozzle you're going to have problems hooking your hose in there, too.Aside from that, the bag looks nice, but it's almost sleek to a fault. If you need to wear gloves or have reduced sensation with your hands you may find getting a hold of the straps and ties on the bag can be frustrating.I'll be returning this one.
Love this pack! I also have the Osprey Tempest 24L which I don't like that much but this one is much better. First of all 24L is just too small. With this 36L I never feel like I don't have enough room and with the same contents it isn't noticeably heavier. I absolutely hate the external bladder compartment of the Tempest. It is a total pain. The Sirrus has an internal pouch and is never a problem. The side pockets of the Tempest are not deep enough to hold your water bottle or seat pad without them falling out if you bend over. The Sirrus ones are a little deeper although they could also be a little deeper. The Tempest doesn't have an incorporated rain over and pocket but the Sirrus does which is much handier. I spent a long time and a lot of research packs and finally found THE ONE.This pack has quickly become my winter hiking best buddy and I'm really looking forward to using it for all seasons.Pros:- Very comfortable to carry heavier loads due to the internal frame.- Roomy and well organized. Enough space to carry all my winter hiking layers, and a few extra luxuries (binocs, thermos, helinox chair). Big without being too big.- No hotspots (unlike the newer 2022 version of this pack)- Available in multiple sizes and an adjustable harness. This helps me as a 5'3" woman for whom the one-size-fits all backpack is often too large and suitcase-ish.- Excellent ventilation due to the mesh in the suspension and harness straps. This is a much better design as compared to some other Osprey packs where the compression straps are connected to the hipbelt for some weird reason.- Internal hydration pack sleeve is big enough to accommodate a laptop, so I can use this as a travel pack as well.- Overall I liked the quality of the pack and it feels like it will last me a long time.- Extra side zipper for the main compartment is very convenient, and also the bottom "sleeping bag" pocket works as a shortcut to get to items at the bottom of the pack.- Pockets in the lid are generously sized and easy to access.- Hipbelt pockets are just big enough to fit a phone. Could have been bigger but are adequate for my use.- Love having the included rain cover in its separate pocket.Cons:- No stretchy mesh front panel pocket. Instead this pack has a front zippered pocket which is smaller and less suited for stashing things on the go, e.g. a wet jacket. This is the only real con.- This is an older years model and multiple color options are no longer available. Not too big a deal for me, the black color still looks pretty nice due to the orange accents.
