But I can't think of many that really split the difference right down the middle as this pack. It has daypack features like non-rigid frame, quite light-weight, relatively small size, and able to cinch down if needed to compress it, and no real bulk. But backpack features like a dedicated sleeping bag compartment, a large enough padded hip belt, a top lid (brain), and adjustable torso size.If you're like a LOT of people out there, who like to go on long day hikes, or with a kid, or partner, or a dog, or in winter or sketchy weather when you'll need to carry extra stuff. This pack is perfect. It also does pretty well on just a regular half-day hike, as it's not very bulky. All the same, there are a LOT of people out there who don't want to go on epic backpack trips. 5-10 miles from the trail head for one night is plenty, this pack is the perfect size for that. So much so, this could be your only pack. There aren't a heck of a lot of packs you can say that about. The one thing I will caution people about, due to its mostly daypack origins in the frame (the Talon is a day pack line-up, but this 44 is not like the others in many ways), this pack, while very comfortable with 20 or so pounds in it, is not built for a heavy load. You start to get 30+ pounds in it and it's going to feel like you're carrying sandbags and water bottles. There are more technical type packs out there for example designed just for that purpose about this volume. But those don't double as good day packs well just the same.

I was looking for a ~20 litre pack and struggling to decide, so I bought ALL the Osprey ~20l packs (over £1,000) so I could try them all. They all offered something I liked but you know I couldn't find one that ticked every box for me, this Talon 11 ticked most!Pros- It seems bigger than 11 litres. I was able to put almost as much gear in this as some of their 20 litre packs- It looks narrow and neat on your back, not big and bulky- It's very comfortable- It's not as hot and sweaty as I thought it would be (I wanted a trampoline back)- The hip pockets are big enough to be usable (some other bags are big enough for just a car key, literally!)- Stow on the go walking pole holders work wellCons- The bladder pocket is flawed and needs to be redesigned. It is very difficult to get an Osprey bladder in there (I'm using the narrower blue one) as the bladder is wider than the space, caused by the load lifter straps being in the way. Yes you can loosen the straps, or even remove them, but this is a faff. Also, the strap that supports the bladder has been sewn onto the soft flexible part of the bag rather than the stiff back support. This means when you have 1-2 kilos of water in there the weight pulls down and distorts the top the bag making it look a right mess.- No integrated rain cover.I've used this bag on two ultra challenges now, both were 100km continuous walks. They stow on the go worked well, I was frequently putting my poles back in the loops and found I could do this without even stopping or slowing down just by leaving the poles fully extended. The hip pockets were accessible and big enough for extra snacks. The bag didn't make my back too sweaty (I was expecting it to), being small and narrow probably helped this. And it was comfortable. I will be modifying the bladder support strap myself. It would be nice to have an integrated rain cover, I know their hiking specific bags have one, but this is not a big deal for me as I have a separate one from another bag, and I can leave it at home if the weather is great.

As soon as I got this bag I was stoked! But didn’t want to write a review until I had a chance to really try it. After spending 2 months hiking in Idaho,Wyoming, Montana I have to say I love this bag and all the features! The size is kinda big for a day pack, But that’s what I was looking for. I purposely overloaded this bag With hammocks, Helinox chairs, stove etc to have epic picnics in Glacier, GTNP, and Yellowstone and it carried well. Did several hammock overnight trips in it with a ton of room to spare. Features are smart, what you would expect from Osprey. Has all the features of a heavy haul pack in a size 44L. Sizing is generous Got the L,XL and it fits really well. The only changes I would make and it’s not enough to shave a star off is I would have liked ... MoreAs soon as I got this bag I was stoked! The only changes I would make and it’s not enough to shave a star off is I would have liked a longer zipper on the lid, there’s plenty of room in the brain just the access zipper is a little short which is a little tough getting things out. Also the side stretchy pockets have 2 access points, the angled ones work great however when you put your Nalgene in vertically it’s a little tough getting it out, especially when pack is loaded. Overall If your an oz counter and minimalist, this bag may not be for you. If you want a comfy bag with loads of features check this one out!

I just received this pack a few days ago but have been day hiking most every day since with it. So far I am very happy with it. It's replacing a 25L day pack to be my day and a half bag. Mostly plan to use for day hikes but there is so much room can easily make an overnight to a couple of nights bag. Once I have the rest of my backpacking equipment I'll probably update this with a review after I've spent a couple overnights in it! But so far nothing but good things to say about this bag! I do intend to get a larger pack in the future but wanted something I could get more than 1 use out of for right now.
Great multi day, I packed a quilted sleeping bag, tent, trekking poles, water supply, weeks worth of food supply, weeks worth of socks and undershirts, two pants and various other items. They all fit great and the adjustment straps make everything well balanced. I got the smaller size, but I wouldn’t recommend the smaller size unless you’re really petite. This is coming from someone who is short; I have trouble getting my arms through the arm straps.
this has been my go to pack for the last 4 years. anything from a day hike to multiday trips I haven't been let down. Recently I even completed the JMT with this pack. Yes a bear vault 500 will fit laterally inside the pack but you will be to the gills with this thing. I would just pack my sleeping bag and pad at the bottom, then place the bear vault inside and just stuff everything else around it and on top. My tent would go between the brain and the body with the middle strap and the brain holding it in place, and the poles I would keep in the water side pocket with my smart water. That said, I would only recommend this pack as a multi day/ multi week pack to people who have their gear UL and dialed in though.. no room for luxury items but just enough for doing ... As said, it looks, this backpack hits the right spot for those who wants a single backpack both for light journeys and multi-day hikes. It is pretty lightweight and well organized. I like the top compartment being separate from the backpack, so you can carry some extra stuff, rope for example. Big side and back pockets, comfortable lumbar belt. I may regret that I haven't got a red color, but in blue it looks beautiful as well.Osprey does good and quality products.
The product description describes the "Talon 44 was designed with ultralight multi-day adventures and travelers in mind.", and for that reason I have to citizen this pack.Backpacking packs generally fall into two camps, ultralight and minimal, or bulky and overbuilt. Unfortunately falls into the latter camp. The side stretch panels annoying with the compression straps that just get in the way and make it difficult to insert/remove 1 liter plastic bottles from them. The pack was clearly intended for the use of a hydration bladder. The bottom access panel is useless once you place add a pack liner to the bag and I'm afraid the zipper hardware is going to tear a hole in the sleeping bag. The combination of the brain and cinch cord access make it a pain to access the main compartment. And lastly, there are straps everywhere and it's not made clear what connects to what.I ultimately decided to return this to REI and and instead purchased a much more minimalist and lighter pack from another company which had a well thought out design for a ultralight multi-day backpacker.
I received this pack but unfortunately had to return because the length was about 3 inches short on me, despite the xl size description as fitting my torso length. I have a larger volume version of this model which has a very useful shoulder strap Velcro adjustment feature, which I set to the longest possible position, making it a good fit, three belt buckle rides lower about two and half to three inches below my belly button which allows me to sinch up the belt and put any whieght on my hips without pressure on my abdomen. I cannot do that with this pack, despite the fact that the torso fit lists it as same as the larger model. Osprey was probably trying to save weight. But if you can’t use it, it doesn’t matter how light it is !15 years ago I had no problems ... Wonderful pack! A pleasure to carry. I ordered a small pack. I didn't want a lot of carrying capacity. I carry between eight and twenty pounds in it and it feels great! One negative: I was shocked to see the condition of the Osprey logo and name on the back of the pack after only a couple of weeks use (probably about 15 miles of carrying and about ten business days of use as my take to the office pack). The logo and name are about halfway gone. Only this part: logo and name look bad. For anyone who wants to flaunt affluence by carrying an Osprey pack this comes across looking like it's old before its time. See attached photo. The L.L. Bean anorak is over thirty years old and its label is holding up rather well.
