But I can't think of many that really split the difference right down the middle as this pack. It has daypack features like non-rigid frame, quite light-weight, relatively small size, and able to cinch down if needed to compress it, and no real bulk. But backpack features like a dedicated sleeping bag compartment, a large enough padded hip belt, a top lid (brain), and adjustable torso size.If you're like a LOT of people out there, who like to go on long day hikes, or with a kid, or partner, or a dog, or in winter or sketchy weather when you'll need to carry extra stuff. This pack is perfect. It also does pretty well on just a regular half-day hike, as it's not very bulky. All the same, there are a LOT of people out there who don't want to go on epic backpack trips. 5-10 miles from the trail head for one night is plenty, this pack is the perfect size for that. So much so, this could be your only pack. There aren't a heck of a lot of packs you can say that about.The one thing I will caution people about, due to its mostly daypack origins in the frame (the Talon is a day pack line-up, but this 44 is not like the others in many ways), this pack, while very comfortable with 20 or so pounds in it, is not built for a heavy load. You start to get 30+ pounds in it and it's going to feel like you're carrying sandbags and water bottles. There are more technical type packs out there for example designed just for that purpose about this volume. But those don't double as good day packs well just the same.

So I looked at this pack side by side with my current Talon 22 (a couple years old model), last years model, and this new one. The newest version doesn't feel as solid or as quality, maybe it's the recycled material. The new pack's shoulder padding feels flimsy compared to last years. After looking more closely the top panel zippered slash pocket is definitely smaller than previous year versions. In the older version the internal pocket was sewn onto the larger top panel packet. Now the top panel is just as small as the internal pocket. The two pockets are essentially two sides of the same pouch with a divider. I wouldn't recommend this pack if you can wait for the next iteration and hope they improve the pockets.

After ordering this backpack I tried it on in-store and decided it wasn't for me. For many people this will be the ideal top-loader backpack for long day hikes. However, they have recently updated the back panel design to make it more breathable, and it seems to have also changed structurally. I find the lumbar support in this updated version to be uncomfortable. It protrudes into my back whencompared to other packs.Maybe this is the cost of making a more ergonomic and supportive frame, but more likely I tried on a faulty unit, it was not well adjusted for me or this backpack just does not fit in my back well. This is just about the most pack one can comfortably handle without getting load lifters above your shoulders with a rigid frame. For everything from a challenging half-day to 36-48 hours out this pack is perfect. Works decently well for airline travel too as a carry-on.The absolute miracle here though is that the pack is so light for its size, comfortable, airy, and compresses so well that I want to use it for most of my regular day hiking as well. Compressed, with a low weight, it feels nimble and body-hugging like the best daypacks for the sake of weighing just a couple ounces more than minimalist packs that you will never notice on such a comfortable suspension. Although really, in a muted color and compressed, this pack can look as sleek as many. Having used much lighter packs that were always a compromise in some way, and heavier, more luxurious models that were never worth the extra weight, I'm a little mad at myself that I didn't give this pack a try earlier in my "career".My only gripes are that as much as I appreciate having a brain instead of zippers or a roll-top, it is permanently attached on the shoulder strap side, and can look a little disheveled when the pack is compressed. (You can loop bungee the pole holders together to meet in the middle and hold it down for a tidier look.) It'd be great to be able to fit a foam sleeping pad beneath a floating brain for overnights instead of being limited to just smaller items like jackets.

Anyway, a definite improvement.Osprey made this less of an improvement by a design change: the ends of the lower compression straps are sewn to the ends of the hipbelt pocket on each side. When you tighten the compression strap it distorts the hipbelt. It's not like you can put on the pack, tighten the hipbelt, then reach back to tighten the lower straps - at least I can't. I would have returned the pack over this, but my wife modded the straps by sewing the ends to a spot on the pack body. Check this feature carefully; it may annoy you as much as it does me.The new 33 is heavier than the original, but not much. Osprey shaved weight by speccing narrower webbing and smaller buckles throughout. Mostly this works, though in cold weather the small buckles are a nuisance. The new top lid is similar to the old, though with improved pockets. On the old pack I didn't care that the top lid was fixed; the pack could deal with overloading. The new suspension can (IMO), and a floating top lid would be nice.The old pack had a great hydration sleeve - easy to load and unload, carried a bladder well. The new pack has a much tighter sleeve, and it's really hard to get a bladder past the new back panel. Once the bladder is in it still carries well. Better hose routing would be nice. The elastic bands are already a bit stretched out. How about a velcro hose tether like my wife's Deuter pack has?Features are pretty much like the original. back and side stretch pockets, tool loops and tethers, a stretch cord for retaining hiking poles (I"ve never used it), etc. Lots of places to stick stuff on the outside of the pack to keep them handy. Except for a place to clip a camera bag for my camera. No place on the shoulder straps to hang that. Sigh.Sizing remains a fiction. I have a 19" back, should be between S/M and M/L according to Osprey. In fact the pack hangs below my shoulders so much that the load lifter straps can't do any lifting because they're already below my shoulders. With the new suspension this pack can actually carry 20+ lb, and that's when I notice the weight on my shoulders. The back panel can handle it, but the pack is too short. Honestly, there needs to be a third size, a L/XL. 19" is not that big. I know people whose backs measure 20" and more....So, all in all a worthy improvement. They kept the weight close to the original while making the pack more capable. A couple issues - the compression straps, the back length - to check out, but worth a look.

I can't understand why they designed a 'fast and light' style pack like this with placement of the side water bottle pockets which makes them impossible to reach while hiking. They could have added a side entrance to those pockets, as they do on the Aether and Atmos models. The tiny, weird pocket on the shoulder strap also seems pretty useless, and a waste of valuable space that could have been used for a larger, stretch pocket which could actually hold a smartphone or GPS. A mostly great pack. High quality suspension and low rise made this a fantastic bike-packing pack. Except for one significant shortcoming: It is nearly impossible to slide a water bladder into the sleeve with anything in the pack. While needing to frequently stop and pump water on a recent trip, this became a real challenge. I resorted to shoving the bladder in 3/4 of the way and just dealing with it. A related point is that a magnetic clip is not included to capture the tip of the drinking hose, typical of many other Osprey packs. Therefore, there isn't a great way to run the drinking hose over the right shoulder, as I'm accustomed. Unfortunately, there is not enough room to add a magnet clip next to the left buckle. I bought this pack to replace my old Talon 22, which ripped at the front after 8-9 years of heavy use. I loved that pack so much I successfully urged my partner to get one roughly 5 years ago.This is in no way comparable to the other two older packs. For starters, it is much smaller in terms of useful space. I barely had room for a light jacket, a larger pair of binoculars, and a couple snacks. Secondly, the hydration sleeve is frustratingly small. Be prepared to spend an extra 10 minutes trying to get a bladder in. Lastly, the material is lighter and cheaper feeling. I recently retired and purchased this Osprey Talon 22 pack along with an XS REI Ducks Back Rain Cover for day hikes.I had it fitted (with added weight at REI )before I left the store in Cincinnati. I am happy to report that this bag performed admirably. It has great fit and balance while using trekking poles on uneven terrain. I had done quite a bit of research before I went to the store. When I talked to the salesman about my needs, ironically it was the the same backpack he recommended. I can see why this bag is rated well. A well balanced fitted pack makes all the difference in the world. I focused on the beauty of my hike instead of the fit/function of the pack. After the first long hike the entire pack made more sense with its stripped back vibe but very functional. After the second long hike I had the adjustments dialed in and settled on how to organize my gear between the inside and outside pockets. This is a great pack. The outside mesh pockets are large and stretchy and can easily accommodate a 1.5l bottle or a waterproof jacket and mid layers etc. the hip pockets felt too far back but I have since got used to their placement. The pocket on the shoulder strap could do with a redesign(take a look at the Gossamer Gear Vagabond). In fact, this would be my ideal bag for multi-day hikes such as the Camino de Santiago.Very satisfied with the pack and I appreciate the smaller details such as the zip pulls etc.
