Best Hoodie Ever

This is without a doubt the best hoodie I have ever owned. I usually lean more to the synthetic insulated hoodies due to the damper conditions in Western Washington. However, it appears that the fabric used on this item will help to keep the down from losing its insulating properties. It also seems like this fabric will be able to take a lot of abuse. This hoodie is amazingly warm in addition to being incredibly light. Yet it still breaths really well during a lot of exertion. And what was my favorite hoodie before I purchased this one? The OR Men's Refuge which still looks like the day I purchased it!

Good jacket, but arms are absurdly bulky

Jacket is well made, warm, and cut fairly slim. However, the arms of the jacket are so wide that i could fit 2 (or maybe 3) of my arms in it. They look pretty ridiculous.I'm 6'1 and about 200 pounds and I bought a size large and the arms are just bafflingly wide. This also causes fabric to bunch unnecessarily where the arm meets the shoulder, in both the front and back, creating a rather sloppy fit there. In the body, it's slim without being tight and the perfect length.I compared it to a Mountain Hardwear ghostwhisperer and the arms are probably 3 inches wider. I just can't understand what exactly they hoped to achieve with that...

Let me start by saying I love this jacket. It is my go to cool weather jacket and I have worn it for everything from casual winter dog walks to trekking in Nepal. It has a great fit and is super durable. I love the reinforced shoulders and arms, especially with a pack on. Saying this it has a couple cons.1. It could be warmer. I read a lot of reviews about down jackets before I bought this one. Some said it was warm, and some said it was not as warm as they expected. I don't find that I can wear this jacket in weather cooler that -8-10C without needing a mid-layer or base layer. It could definitely benefit from some more down, even if it adds a bit of extra weight. There are lighter jackets out there if people are concerned about weight, so make it warmer.2. The main zipper consistently puckers around the chest pocket, which, on its own, would make me reconsider purchasing it again. There's something about the way the chest pocket is sewn into the jacket that causes the zipper to pucker and fold over. This flaw seems like a relatively straightforward design fix, especially considering that none of my other jackets exhibit this issue. I am a big fan of OR product, but they have overlooked this aspect of the design. It's possible that they have addressed this in the new model year, as mine is a season or two old. However, I would strongly recommend trying it on before purchasing. If the chest pocket still feels tight and pulls on the zipper, it's worth questioning whether you can tolerate this issue, as it doesn't seem to improve with wear.

It would be a 5 if it were 1" longer in the torso length
12 January 2024

Bought this after searching and reading reviews all last winter for a thicker puffy. I had a few OR garments in my closet and never had a bad thing to say. I've used it for about 2 months now on hikes and general use in up to -20F.I like this jacket a lot. It hits just about everything I wouldneed in a cold weather puffy.I'm 6'4", 225lb with wider shoulder and I lift weights. Have a slight dad bod, but not terrible. The sleeves are perfect, the shoulder width is excellent and no tightness when active. It's warm, it's waterproof where it needs to be. The hood is perfect for wearing a buff with it (I always have a buff) and it seems to repel stains well. No tears or holes yet, but I'm sure I'll have some after the abuse I'll put it through. My only gripe is the ... MoreBought this after searching and reading reviews all last winter for a thicker puffy. It sits just below my belt line, but being a tall guy it tends to pull up when bending over. So I would add another 1" in torso length.Aside from that I highly recommend it!

Lack of baffles makes the jacket unwashable
17 August 2024

After a couple of years, I thought it was time to give it a wash. Put it in a frontloading machine, and then tumbled low with a few tennis balls. Let it finish air drying. Holding the jacket up to the sunlight, I could see that the down had bunched up into the corners of the long baffles, especially on the sleeves where the baffles run uninterrupted around the circumference. Is this jacket supposed to be disposable once it gets dirty?I'm very disappointed because I figured this relatively durable jacket would be a better value than something lighter but more delicate.

My go-to jacket
13 March 2024

This is a great jacket. I have taken it everywhere with me. The thing that I find with many other down jackets is that they are not durable enough for the clumsy lifestyle that I have. The Helium fabric on the shoulders and hood is awesome! It especially sheds off rainy Seattle weather, but is also very durable. It is my favorite down jacket I have ever owned. I did need to size up for this one so that I could wear a fleece underneith it as well. If you wanted a more fitted look and feel I would keep with your normal jacket size.

Perfect for cold and humid Montreal winter temperature
3 February 2024

Very pleased with the product. I'm 6'5" and 210 pds. XL size fits well to my body and also under my OR AscentShell jacket. Not to puffy. The length of the sleeves are perfect with my long arms. I live near Montreal, Quebec, where winter can be quite cold and humid. Bought the hoodie with the perspective of using it while taking a lunch break during a hike or at the end of a day-hike, but so far, mainly used it in day-to-day activities in and around town. The warmth and wind resistance do well the job so far. Looking forward to "stressed it" in harsher conditions.

Surprised by the Colour!
17 January 2024

When he coat arrived, I was very pleasantly surprised as the colour of the coat was far less shiny than online. It was very fashionable for the time period 23-24. That being said, the fit is snug and tailored in the back and side as OR tends to be. This coat has been around and the reviews speak for themselves. However, I find it does better in the wind than I anticipated. I am not used to an 800 loft not having the "puffiness" but I will say, the material and down handled the wind chill here in BC, Canada. All in all I like the coat and I will continue to sing OR praises. Worth the price if you are looking for gear, not just going to the mall.

Versatile, light and warm
31 January 2024

This down jacket is versatile and works well as layer or standalone. The cuffs are notably comfortable and durable easily adapting to over or under circumstances. Using under shell I am convinced it could adequately keep me comfortably warm below -20C with only moderate activity in typical conditions. So far have tested -18C in both humid and dry conditions in combination with base layer without any discomfort. The durability is convincing so far and I have tested it fairly extensively.Pockets have a super soft lining that most will adore though for me it catches my ruff cracked skin on my hands. The two interior quick stash pockets are well placed and designed and perform very well offering a lot of quick storage with little chance of items unintentionally falling ... MoreThis down jacket is versatile and works well as layer or standalone. Zippers seem dependable so far though they have a tendency to not close smoothly at times I assume its a tradeoff for some of the other more desirable properties like wind proofing. The jacket is fairly east to get in and out of including under more challenging positions like in a sleeping bag.I found freedom cof movement to be good also. This jacket packs down to a fairly compact size making it ideal for my backpacking needs. After unpacking it gains enough loft within minutes to provide significant warmth. I would have liked to see more down and loft in this jacket and less slippery nylon which I believe would improve breathability and make it feel lighter and more subtle. Also I find it lacks style being a tad boxy and not so form fitting but I understand performance comes first and that would undoubtedly effect versatility.

Warm and durable
28 August 2023

I have had a few days on the trail with this coat and so far really love it. The temps have not been all that cold but we hit the high 40s with 20 mph winds. The coat kept me plenty warm with just a t-shirt underneath. It really blocked the wind and shed the minor amount of moisture we saw. I really liked the hood, toasty warm on my bald head and the elastic adjustment had it fitting perfectly. The coat packs down real well and puff right back very quickly.Sizing. I generally wear large, nearly 100%of the time. I ordered a XL based on some other reviews and it was perfect. I would describe myself as 6ft 220lb and a mix of athletic and dad bod. I generally want a large tall for the length in the torso and the arms. The XL hits all the marks on size. Plenty of space to fit a base and mid layer as well. While this jacket isn't the lightest in it class it might be the most durable. As someone who goes crashing through the bushes from time to time I'm happy with how durable the material appearsSo far I'm very happy with this coat. We will see how it does this winter
