On its best day this jacket might be considered "drizzle resistant", and even that's generous.I bought this for the 3-month South America trip I'm currently on. My priority was compactness over performance, as I'm operating entirely out of a 55L pack, and this jacket fit that bill. Of course it wouldn't have the wet performance of a proper 3-layer, but it's lightweight, stuffs into its own pocket, and reviews suggested it still held up well enough in the rain, agreeing with the product description: "When a storm blows in, slip on the light and durable protection of the men's Outdoor Research Helium rain jacket". After trying it on in-store, I also liked the fit and the look. And it's front pocket *just* fit my distastefully large (6.7") phone. In the mirror, I was already fantasizing about this shell bailing me & my electronics out on the hike back from Chalten.Hahaha! The first test came during a few hours of persistent rain in Buenos Aires. These sort of jackets aren't made for that, of course, but it was enlightening anyway. The then-new jacket wetted out in what must have been <15 minutes. My pants, which weren't even marketed as water proof, lasted 1-2 hours. My non-waterproof backpack lasted longer than it. Even my everyday tennis shoes, which have mesh vents on the top, kept me dry significantly longer than this jacket.I'm writing this at a coffee shop in Cochabamba a month later. I was inspired after walking ~10 minutes here through a gentle rain, taking it off and seeing the whole hood was already wet on the inside. So, what's the point of this jacket, exactly? In some circumstances you'd be better off just wearing a t-shirt (or an old REI Flash jacket, like it was meant to replace in my case). In addition to not performing in the rain, the lack of hand pockets was a lot more detrimental than I thought it would be. There are a couple other jackets in this segment than have both hand pockets and pit zips and come in at roughly the same weight, and to my those features would be worth having even at the cost of an ounce or two.To end on a positive, there are good reasons I'm not just giving it a 1/5. Despite its utter failure at it's stated goal, this jacket has actually been really nice to travel with. It's done a great job shielding me from some of the most intense winds I've ever walked in. The seals and stitching are all extremely high quality--so much so that I'm actually keen on buying more from OR in the future--and the somewhat exotic material held up better than I thought it would after I took a nice branch to the side of my head. As a Seattleite with no hair, getting a bit wet in the elements bothers me less than the misleading marketing.I hope some day we have environmentally friendly textiles that can make a jacket like this work, but clearly we aren't there yet. If OR has some tech breakthrough and wants to take another swing at it, and they add hand pockets and pit zips, I'll be first in line to buy a new one. But as it stands, we're talking about a $160 wind breaker... Pass on it.

Don’t call it a “Rain Jacket”

I purchased this jacket for a trip abroad for which packability and rain resistance were pivotal. I was very disappointed to find that it wetted out within 5 minutes in a medium rain shower on the first day that I used it. Unfortunately I hadn’t read the reviews of this product on either the REI or Outdoor Research website before purchasing it. Both had some highly critical assessments as to its water resistance, and my experience bears that out too. In my opinion, this product is only useful as a lightweight windbreaker. It is very light and it packs well, although it has only one small chest pocket. But if you are looking for a “rain jacket” that will actually keep you dry…. keep looking.

Huge failure
17 January 2023

I have numerous O R products and am happy with them. This jacket seemed a great light fast item for certain outings. Well, this is the most disappointing product iv'e ever bought. I wore this outside in a light/moderate rain and in minutes the fabric had wetted out and i felt like i had soggy sack hanging on me, i felt clammy, Took all night to dry, total failure . a few days later i did an experiment, i put a towel in a bowl and laid a sheet of toilet paper on the towel ,then turned hood inside out in the bowl so that the hood was a bowl, filled it with water within 15 minutes fabric was wetted out and most surprising was the toilet paper was swelling, getting puffy, and felt damp. Must buy! Very impressed!!

This is a very good product and worth the money! I was skeptical at first when buying such a light weight rain jacket, but I'm glad I trusted the overwhelming positive reviews on this product. My first and only use of this jacket (so far) was wearing the jacket all day in a soaking rain that dumped nearly 3 inches of rain over the course of the day. Temperature was around 60 degrees and a light wind and I only needed a light sweatshirt underneath to keep plenty warm. This jacket breathed well and I never felt like I was getting wet or sweaty. At the end of the day, only a little wet spot got through on the front of my shirt where I did not have the jacket zipper fully up. My hat, aside from the bill that stuck out past the hood, was completely dry.The packed size ... MoreThis is a very good product and worth the money! It was also surprisingly quiet.

New jacket soaked through almost immediately
3 June 2023

After using my 1st Helium jacket for a few seasons I decided to buy a new one. Unfortunately it would soak through within minutes of wearing it in light rain. It's very confusing because the jacket is so expensive and OR is such a reputable company, but it just seems like there are quality issues with this Helium jacket. Also if you're planning a big trip, I'd buy this jacket with plenty of time in advance in case you need to warranty it. Currently their warranty department takes weeks/months to process a claim. After I filled out the online claim form it took a month to get authorized for a replacement. I mailed the jacket back to them and I'm expecting it to take at least a couple weeks to a month to be issued the credit to buy a replacement on their website.

O.R.Helium Jacket was great gear on A.T. !
11 June 2023

I recently bought the Outdoor Research Helium rain jacket right before launching into my 2nd long section hike of the A.T. starting in mid Virginia. I have always used a sea to summit ultrasil large pack covering poncho but grew frustrated with lower portions sticking to my legs and unsnapping. The O.R. Helium rain jacket worked great on several day long rainy hikes this time. The Helium is lighter than the very light poncho I had been using and was more dual purpose as a wind jacket and warmth layer, and town wash day outfit.I was very impressed and surprised with its breathability while hiking in the rain. I used a super light silnylon pack cover and will probably add a rain kilt to keep my shorts dry…probably worth a couple ounces that the wet shorts would absorb ... MoreI recently bought the Outdoor Research Helium rain jacket right before launching into my 2nd long section hike of the A.T. starting in mid Virginia. It fit well under my pack as if not even there. No bunching up problems at all. Waterproof zippers!I’m 5’9’ 175# and a large fit just right, nice form fitting with no extra, but not tight anywhere.I’m very happy with it as a multi purpose piece of gear that saved me a couple ounces too!

This is the jacket! Vents sweat, warm, not too hot
20 August 2023

I’ve been looking for a solid “active” jacket for a while now. My hope is to find something good for running in a light drizzle and staying warm (but also cool) on spring, summer, and fall hikes. This is a broad spectrum of requirements, I’m aware, but I loathe “options”. I don’t want to read a forecast and build an optimal outfit, I just want a jacket that works! I’ll take it off if it’s too warm, but want it to be light and effective when I need it.Requirements:* Vents heat and sweat (crucial)* Waterproof (important)* Light weight (I want to be able to shove it in a day pack, carry it running)Vanity stuff:* Good length (I’m 6’2” and have a somewhat long torso, I prefer M Tall tee shirts to give an idea of what I aim for)* Stylish (I pretend this is not ... MoreI’ve been looking for a solid “active” jacket for a while now. I’ve tried several, and they all come up short. They are waterproof but trap in heat like a sauna or get humid like a steam room. They fit poorly or look goofy. Not this one.I’ll be honest, I have not tested the water proofing, but this felt great all the way up and down the Freemont Lookout Trail at Mt. Rainier. The jacket performed admirably. It provided solid mid-high altitude summer weather warmth, blocked wind, and let sweat evaporate easily.Even if the waterproofing is just OK, I think I’ll be very happy with this purchase.I went for one of the not discounted color schemes, it was just too good to pass up. So I think this jacket is worth it even full price.5/5, Outdoor Research made a nice jacket!

Ultra Lightweight 2.5 layer
21 January 2023

Pros: It is extremely light and comfortable. It works in light to mid rain and decent for short time periods in heavy rain. Excellent wind protection, too. Great for travel and activities when you don't expect all-day rain every day. Great for cold drizzly windy weather. The fit is slim and long. All in all, it's a great piece of equipment if you recognize its limitations.Cons: The only real unexpected downside is the lack of velcro on the cuffs. The elastic doesn't quite work for seal my wrists, so water and wind can enter my sleeves. I bought the large so I could fit a midlayer underneath, but should have stuck with medium. No pit zips or hand pockets (but I knew that when I bought it), so you'll probably overheat if worn for a long time during activities or in ... MorePros: It is extremely light and comfortable. This oa a fantastic bad weather shell that, from my experience, a medium period of time, will keep you out of the wind and dry.I would also like to note the jacket itself dries very quickly as well. This was my first experience using the helium. I have used it also as a windbreaker in sunny but cold and windy conditions and remained quite warm.Overall, a fantastic investment. Very portable too!
