I used to have a heavy-duty stainless steel egg separator that was misplaced when I moved to a new house. I couldn't remember the brand (or find it online otherwise), so I gave the OXO one a shot. Low price, reputable/good brand... but it had questionable reviews online. But I have to say, I think it actually works better than my original one. I love that it has an edge to crack the egg, it's lightweight to lift and swivel to help loosen the egg white, and it's dishwasher safe. While this is a great idea and it looks like it would work well, the design falls short. This device is very frustrating to use. The egg yolk easily slips right through the slots and plops into the separated egg whites. The slots are too wide and too low to the bottom of the device. The area where the egg yolk should pool and be held is too small. I have a very old egg separator (Pedrini brand) that still works perfectly every time. It has yellowed with age, so I will continue to use it. The OXO was a disappointment. It now sits at the back of the junk drawer.

We needed 6 dozen egg yolks for a pie-making binge, and thought this would speed up the process. After about 3, we went back to using the egg shells back-and-forth method.Bottom line is the egg white was too thick to flow through the slits. If I swirled it around, it would eventually work its way through and leave the yolk behind, but it took quite a while, perhaps 30 seconds. Maybe it's because the eggs were still cold? I may try to make the slits a bit wider with a razor knife or drill bit to see if that works. More likely, I'll go to a restaurant supply house and try quart-size cartons of egg yolks if I ever need this many again.

I've had a hard time trying to locate an egg separator in a local store and had to result to the internet. I was excited to receive my egg separator due to the fact I lost a porcelain treasured one to Katrina. The separator is very durable and sound and I thought would be a great addition to my baking utensils.Unfortunately, we I used it - the white and yolk of the egg (large) went straight thru the holes. I don't know if this was the result of the eggs being room temperature or what - but I had to result to separating them the old fashion way. Never had this problem with my other separator. I will try again - same result- then this item is useless to me - as I bake often and the purpose of the separator was to aid in the process - not hinder it.
The perfect little egg separator which I've added to my son's growing kitchen tool collection. As he loves to bake, this is ideal for helping him quickly expedite his egg separating needs.
I had an old egg separator that I lost in a move, so needed a new one. This works perfectly. I hook it onto a normal stoneware mug, rather than the thick bowl lid shown, and that works fine. The little yellow handle makes it easy to pick up without getting egg on my fingers. It holds up well in the dishwasher, either rack, and is easy to clean by hand as well.
Was so excited when I saw this in BB&B! Couldn't wait to use it for Thanksgiving desserts! I am paralyzed on one side, so with this, I thought that I could manage my mom's egg white frosting with Dole crushed pineapple. Every egg failed!! Not worth the time or effort! DEFINITELY going back to BB&B! Should know if brand sold in Walmart, how good could it be? YES!! WORSE!!! Husband laughed at me for buying! He was RIGHT!!! SHAME, SHAME XO!! Only gave 1 star to post review. NOT EVEN WORTH THE ONE!!!!
I have alot of OXO brand pieces. However I was a little disappointed on the separator. I tried device on mixing bowl & it wobbles. You can see in listed picture how bowl is made & device fits nicely. They did try & make another area to fit smaller bowls and i love concept, but i ended up just purchasing an egg daisy you sit over top a cup to separate. We'll see how that goes.
This does not do the job it was purchased for. Any egg smaller than extra large and the yolk slips through. It’s whole job is to separate the yolk from the way.
This is one little tool that works. It separates eggs in no time. Cracking eggs on the raised ridge eliminates the potential for drips down the outside of the bowl or on the counter. I have used it successfully with both thick and thin-edged bowls. It is both sturdy and dishwasher safe. There are so many single-purpose kitchen gadgets on the market today, a number of which I question relative to actual need. This, however, is a keeper.
