A bargain if you don't need the latest & greatest

Recently purchased the Panasonic DMR-HWT260 Twin HD Tuner to replace the "old" Panasonic DMR-XW380GLK 250GB SD version I've had for years and so far I'm pretty happy with it. Having had the SD version for so long, using the Twin HWT260 was a breeze as it's (obviously) so similar to the old version. While this particular model is sort of old tech, it's "high tech" enough for me and at the discounted price, it was a bargain. Does everything it should and didn't have to tune in stations which was good. Has a clean look about it it which I like. As an added bonus I discovered that I can use the "old remote" on the new machine. Another bonus is the bigger HDD (1TB) as compared to the old 250GB. No big deal though. Other than that it's all good. Had a bit of trouble hooking it up to my Samsung TV but that was down to me being a bit stupid and not thinking it through. If anyone's had a Panasonic PVR before I'd suggest you won't have too much trouble with this one. All in all pretty pleased with the purchase. That view will possibly change if it starts playing up (ha-ha). Cheers.

The antenna connection is a Pal socket and plug that supports daisy chaining back to your TV so you can record two channels simultaneously and watch a third channel via the TV. A daisy chain cable and an HDMI cable are included. The PVR also supports a number of Streaming services through WiFi or an Ethernet port for direct connection to your router. The PVR is also brilliant at "pausing live TV" if you don't want to miss any of a live show when you are interrupted by visitors or the phone. This PVR is easy to use and far outperforms the 'pretend' PVR's with USB memory that are built into many TV's and Set Top Boxes. If you don't have a PVR, this unit can change the way you watch TV by capturing those 'interesting' programs that are aired at an inconvenient time.

Does the task, but slow older tech.

I'm surprised that Panasonic, in this day and age, are selling technology which is a physical hard drive base, rather than something that is SSD based. Not only for speed allowances, but also for providing a failsafe so that the hard drive doesn't fault or break like so many physical drives have been known to do.The PVR does the job, however it does feel like a very old OS system, and there's no way to have the system automatically turn on when it sees the TV being turned on. Because of this, it's a bit of a hassle, especially when trying to explain the system to older generations who "just want it to work".The picture quality is great, however, and after getting used to the system, it does what you ask it to do.My only recommendation is, if you don't have a ... MoreI'm surprised that Panasonic, in this day and age, are selling technology which is a physical hard drive base, rather than something that is SSD based. A shame, given how great the Panasonic brand once was.

Bought this 4 days ago to replace Vodafone TV. After reading some negative reviews I was surprised to find that this is a good unit and I can definitely recommend buying it. Unlike Vodafone TV this can record anything and the recorded programs are very easy to find and play, also the fast forward-rewind is much better. You can also set up future programs to record from your phone, away from home, and can view recorded programs on your phone or tablet (some people have trouble with the app but you need to register first via the app and be on the same WIFI as this recorder when setting it up). The remote is good - I do not agree with criticisms except that the buttons for Netflix and Internet are somewhat small but just be careful. There is no Mute button so you have to use the mute on your TV remote or soundbar remote. The recorder remote can pair with your TV - just follow instructions in the user manual. It is true that Tivo is (was) easier to use but this recorder is not difficult to use at all unless you are really inept with technology. When recording a program you cannot watch other TV channels unless you use your TV remote and choose the Source as TV (not Panasonic Recorder) - this is a drawback but not a deal breaker and besides there is no other recorder currently on the market. Netflix and YouTube are good on this device.

Not the best recorder I have had.
11 July 2022

It is the only one available now and there are quirte a few things I don't like. The handset is terrible as the keys are so close together you accidently press the wrong button. I previously had two Topfields and an Altech but they are no longer available but were a far superior unit. It doesn't show how far advanced the program is when you are watching a recording without pressing info twice, then it's hard to figure out, and there's no padding, so you have to remember to extend the length each time you record or you miss the ending because Channels are always running late.

Easy to set up. Records properly. Easy to control with the remote. The only thing i found is that i need to turn volume up higher while using the recorder than i need if just watching the tv itself. So when i go back to normal tv, i then need to turn volume back down again. It wouldnt matter to people that only watch through the recorder, but i dont do that. Thats why it lost a star from me. Im very happy with this recorder.

After setting this up I was shocked to find its tuner had very little volume meaning you had to turn up the volume by more than 10 notches on the remote to hear it. Called Panasonic three times. Technicians no help. They just said that's the way it is. Appliancesonline were more helpful - I could either have a Panasonic technician visit my home or they could arrange a replacement. I opted for the later and the changeover was scheduled for the next day. But that night I did a bit more checking of the unit and found that despite being told there was no volume adjustment, I found volume adjustment Mode 1 and Mode 2. It was set on Mode 1 so i changed it to Mode 2. When I set up the replacement. once again the PVR tuner volume was very low so I changed it to Mode 2. Still seemed low. Then I noted in the manual that the TV can be operated from the TV operations buttons on the PVR remote. So I followed the instructions to enable this and strangely, the PVR volume came up to almost be at the same level as the TV volume. So it took a lot of effort, no thanks to Panasonic technicians, and the PVR works fine and I'm happy with it.

Bought this to replace old Topfield PVR that stopped working. Does everything I need with a great quality picture. Noticed some negative comments about certain features that I'd like to address. Someone said they can't change the recording time for the program to end later than scheduled. You can. Press record, then press record again and a box comes up to say edit timer record, then adjust the start and end times. Simple. Also if you are recording 2 programs and want to watch another, you can put the TV on Live TV instead of PVR as sometimes the channel you want to watch is on a different bandwidth from the 2 programmes you're recording.Simple!

Serious shortcomings
8 February 2022

The audio level on recorded programmes is very low. For most programmes it is necessary to have subtitles displayed which makes for a degraded viewing experience. It is not possible to set up a default over run time for recording programmes so if the programme is late starting (as happens very frequently), the last few minutes of the programme are lost. The only way around this is to not only record the programme I want, but also the programme after it which will then carry the end of the programme I want. There is apparently no way to add other apps or shortcuts to streaming services such as iView, SBS On Demand etc.All in all, a most unsatisfactory experience. My past experience with Panasonic products has been excellent. This recorder, unfortunately, is a lemon.
