The Leica 100-400mm lens was purchased to go with my new Lumix G9II. My older long range combo, a Canon 60D (later 80D) and Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary lens was getting too heavy for these elderly muscles to hold steady, and the reach of the new equipment is almost as far and weighs 2 1/2 pounds less! You can see in the pictures the quality of the glass. Another plus is the improved auto focusing and great image stabilization combined with the G9II. In situations where the Canon/Sigma needed at least a monopod, the Lumix/Leica can be hand-held. Although you can still shake it down, it won’t creep outward on its own while being carried vertically. I really like that. The zoom ring itself only needs a quarter turn for full travel, but I prefer pushing it in and out. The focus ring is perfectly smooth and the simplicity of attaching and removing the tripod foot can’t be better. The only thing I didn’t like is the focal length switch. It sticks up and is too easily tripped accidentally. The lens hood is a little weird, too. Otherwise I love this lens. It’s giving me some great close-ups from such a lightweight rig.

I got delivery of the new Panasonic G9MkII the other day with this lens to try out. I wanted to have a lightweight combo for birding and wildlife at the long end. I have a Z9 and 100-400 with a teleconverter but needless to say it's like getting a workout to use often. Some time ago I had the opportunity to use the MkI version of this lens on an OM-1 I had. Without the OM-1's IBIS on the lens alone was rock solid stable which amazed me. Sadly it wasn't sharp at the long end and went back. This new MkII version had a much smoother extension on the zoom which immediately pleased me. As did the switches and overall built which is very Leica like. Now for the bad news. Out of camera shots were anything BUT sharp from it's 250mm reach on. Very poor at the long end. I ... MoreI got delivery of the new Panasonic G9MkII the other day with this lens to try out. I tested it out extensively and found overall the OIS on this lens was very poor indeed. Anything BUT stable which the older version I tried was amazing at. I just couldn't reason keeping it, so it has gone back. I'm really bummed as I really liked the overall performance of the camera body. Maybe I'll either try another lens down the line or just forget about it.

I've used this lens for a week now, using it together with a recently purchased DG-9 mark ii camera. The lens has proven to be very sharp at all focal lengths and operates flawlessly. I was concerned about some comments noting a stiff zoom ring, but this must have been addressed in this version, as it operates very smoothly. So far it's been very easy to take great photos using it in conjunction with the G-9 mark ii. It's an impressively compact configuration for such a long lens. Looking forward to a lot more use!

I picked up this lens to pair with my G9II. I have another micro four thirds 100-400mm lens that I use on my E-M1 MK3 and I’ve never been pleased with the image quality or sharpness. This Panasonic lens is sharper, faster at the short end and way lighter and easier to handle. The zoom ring is buttery smooth, and the image quality noticeably better on either body. Very pleased with this lens, well done Panasonic. If you’re looking for a long lens for micro four thirds, I would suggest this over its counterpart.
I was delighted to receive from B&H a very good copy of the Mark II version of my most used lens, the Panasonic Leica DG 100-400. It is sharp wide open and zooms smoothly. Specular highlights are pleasing as is the OOF bokeh. My well-used Mark I version of the 100-400 was getting tired and seemed not able to keep up with my DC-G9M2 for BIF. This Mark II lens works excellently on the G9M2 and on my original DC-G9, too. (From another source I previously had purchased another Mark II, and returned it because my old lens was sharper wide open at 400mm and when stopped down to f7.1.)
I was sort of set back by the stiffness of the zoom ring but liked the performance I got out of the optics. I bought a really good, heavy duty metal screw in lens hood to fit this lens and now just grab the lens hood and use the lens as a push-pull zoom. That seems to work fairly well. At 400mm I generally shoot at f/8 and get excellent results. Wide open I did lose just a slight bit of sharpness which can be fixed with Topaz but I don't spend as much time as some people on post processing my raw files. When the Olympus 150-400 was announced, I got on the waiting list but when the price came in at $7300, I took my name off the list. This lens is a bargain compared to the 150-400. Since I have never used the Olympus lens I can't speak of performance comparisons.
I was searching for another telephoto lens to pair with the Leica DG 200mm f2.8 for close-up concert footage from a distance. The quality from this lens is similar to other zoom lenses in the Lumix lineup. That is to say, it's great! You will get some nice bokeh from this with the proper framing and it's most prominent in the 250-400mm range. If you are deciding between this and the 200mm f2.8, there is no comparison. The 200mm is above and beyond, and worth the additional cost, without question. As another reviewer mentioned, the zoom control is stiff on this, making it less than ideal to operate. I thought the lens lock was broken at first (and stuck in the lock position) but that's just how it is.
I took delivery on one of the first first units of this lens and returned it after writing a two-star review due to the wonky zoom and locking controls which were very clearly going to irritate me every time I used the lens. After reading several glowing reviews between November and now, I decided to try another unit, hoping that the problems had been addressed. And it turns out that they have been. I received a second unit yesterday and the build and working quality are up to Panasonic's usual standards which are worthy of at least five-stars. I've only shot a few test photos, but it looks like this lens is going to give me what I want which is a super telephoto lens on my Lumix G9 II. After testing this lens for a couple of months, I find that there are no physical issues with the lens and that it is optically sharp throughout the focal range. The build quality is consistent with other Panasonic Leica lenses. Meaning it is very well made. The zoom ring issue has been fixed in this newer version of the lens.I've used this lens for landscape, architecture, wildlife and macro photography and the image quality is excellent. Overall, this lens when paired with a G9M2 makes for a great long distance hiking setup. You can carry this all day long and not feel it the next day.
I received this lens yesterday. I could tell without even mounting the lens that I would be irritated every time I use it, regardless off the image quality. The zoom control is stiff zoomed-in but less so zoomed-out, i.e. it varies depending on the angle of view. Is that a design feature? It's not how the zoom control on my numerous other lenses work. There is a focus lock that clicks nicely when it is unlocked, but feels like it is traveling over a hump when you lock it. Is that another design feature? I like the mounting ring design, and the lens hood design is very cool. There is a shallow hood that slides and a larger hood that attaches to the sliding smaller on, so they slide together. Not sure why you would want them to slide together but it works nicely. ... MoreI received this lens yesterday. The wonky controls are reason enough to reject a $1600 lens. It's going back. This is not the Lumix quality that I am used to.
