Tried smaller and lighter cameras but l just couldn't get used to them - wear specs and have a bit of shake in the hands, but this camera is very forgiving. So I've come back to my favourite camera from a great seller with a good deal. Very pleased indeed.

As my first digital camera to venture into nature and travel photography, I could not be more happy with my purchase. It's super easy to learn, has many great features, and I love how that even though it's small compared to other cameras, it packs a HUGE punch. The greatest thing about it is that I don't have to spend money buying new lenses and lugging them around with me everywhere. The lens and zoom on this camera are incredible. Functions like wifi transfer are also super useful. I can see myself sticking with this camera for many years to come.

Extremely versatile - You need to consider this one

Good, older gen camera; but is it what YOU need?

I am pleased with the Panasonic Lumix ZS300. I found it to be good mix of features and price point (<$500). I wanted an upgrade from my DMC ZS7 (2010) - a typical pocket point and shoot: ZS300 (2015) gave me added zoom (24x vs 12x), much better low light performance, electronic viewfinder (much better than a LCD monitor in bright sunlight), faster start up and focusing, sharper lens.Because I will be using it for travel and nature photography the superior weather sealing and relatively lighter weight (only 1.6 lbs) versus most bridge cameras was a strong plus. Since this is an older camera, the price is reasonable (I've had two SLR's and telephoto lenses stolen, lost a few point and shoots cameras - so I put a limit on how much I am willing to invest). 24x zoom is ... MoreI am pleased with the Panasonic Lumix ZS300. Since this is an older camera, the price is reasonable (I've had two SLR's and telephoto lenses stolen, lost a few point and shoots cameras - so I put a limit on how much I am willing to invest). 24x zoom is about as much as one can reasonably use for hand held shooting. Versus higher zoom factor cameras, I expect better shorter focal length lens performance. On the negative side: No blue tooth / communication with other electronics is a challenge. 12.9 megapixal and 1/2 .3 sensor is way behind the industry standard in better cell phones, let alone cameras. The 1/2.3 sensor is essential to achieve the weight zoom benefit. For my purposes, too many buttons and choices and alternate ways of programming the camera. Intelligent Auto takes some fine pictures, but, to get the most out of the camera you will invest a lot of time (DAYS!) in understanding all the program choices. Download the advanced instructions PDF. Graham Houghton YouTube videos will help. Because of the complexity, setting up camera programs in the field (away from your 90 page instruction manual) may be a challenge. Your subject could be long gone before you get the camera set up if you are trying to optimize your shot.It is relatively light and compact for a bridge camera, but consider if that is what you need versus a pocket camera. Size dictates that this camera will be traveling around your neck, or in your pack back. I would NOT recommend the added complexity, and larger size for the average traveler. So consider carefully if you would not get more use out of a simpler, smaller camera, even at a higher price point. On the other hand, if you care about getting superior quality photos, the ZS300 should be an excellent starter full feature camera.I came close to returning it for something simpler and more compact myself. Then I took a zoom close up photo of a Cooper's Hawk eating a sparrow; 50 feet away; up in the shadows of a multi branch tree. I used Intelligent Auto; the exposure and focus were perfect. I don't think any pocket camera could have delivered that.Lastly, a shout out to Adorama. With free delivery (6 days), their added free bundle (case, UV lens, memory card, cleaning kit, and Corel post processing software, no other dealer came close in value.

Great but flawed
4 November 2023

This is an excellent, versatile camera. I would give it 5 stars except for several things. 1, I wish it had a manual zoom like my old FZ50. 2, 12mp sensor is outdated, should be 20mp. 3, the 50 allowed me to use autobracket with the timer (handy if you don't have a remote available). The 300 makes you select one or the other but not both. 4, Zoom of 600mm is great but other cams offer longer zooms. 5, my 300 failed after two weeks. Zoom stopped working. Adorama shipped me a new one immediately, but I decided to purchase an extended warranty because of the obvious defect of the first one.

It's a meh from me. Lots of features but the photo quality is just okay and the zoom is bunk.

Good feature set, better for video than still images compared to a DSLR. Menu system is deep and can be overwhelming. The viewfinder [EVF] can be terrible when used in snow or any outdoor, bright light conditions. The Leica lens is okay, but the small sensor size means at 600mm your images will look pretty poor. Overall, I'd call this one a swing and miss for still images, especially and specifically at full or near full zoom. The EVF makes for short battery life and that EVF is just not very good as a composing tool. The autofocus can be slow to lock and that can make this a very frustrating camera when trying to capture even relatively slowly moving objects. Video is pretty good, unless panning, where rolling shutter problems can be a serious problem. My main ... MoreGood feature set, better for video than still images compared to a DSLR. My main cameras are SLRs and DSLRs and this was purchased as an adjunct to them in my wildlife photography efforts, but for that use case, this is just not the right tool for me. Honestly, sorry I bought it but cheap as it was, it seemed like a reasonable risk to take. There may be some people who have a great use case for this camera, but I am not one of those. I've been taking photos for 50+years so I'm not exactly a newbie photographer and I've owned and used dozens of cameras and lenses. I'll update this as Iget more mileage with this camera but after using it for several weeks in multiple settings, I come away with the opinion that this is just a point-and-shoot camera with too much sizzle, not enough steak and too small of a sensor to make it a worthwhile tool for me and probably many other photography fans.

Not great with tech and confused by some of the features and support.

You should read this with the understanding that I'm not really very good with tech stuff. I saw the great reviews and bought hoping it would make taking especially long shots of wildlife easier. I knew I would have to learn many of the features but the manual seems really dated in that some instructions don't appear to match the camera in hand. The Panasonic Software allowed me to see the photos but not download them as the button used to accept and download wasn't on the screen. Called Panasonic and it seemed that there wasn't much help with the software to be had there although the folks were nice and suggested other ways I could manipulate my photos other than using the (provided) Panasonic software. The camera is new to me and I'm struggling to use many of the features but I can't blame the camera on what may be my own confusion about what to do and how to do it. I have taken it out to do some bird and distant seal shots (it's pupping season for Harbor Seals) but I've been forced to take a lot of different shots and hope some of them turn out. When the photos are good I'm really impressed with the clarity of shots using the powerful zoom. My main problem has been to find the correct focus at extreme distance. I hoped this camera viewfinder would make focus easy but it hasn't for me. Generally I'd say this is poorly supported by the Panasonic manual and software if, like me, you are not strong on technical stuff. I have no doubt of the quality others have attested to in other reviews.

Purchase this camera for a frustrating experience and very poor quality images.
9 August 2022

Although the camera is well built the menu and operation is difficult, confusing, outdated and clumsy. Image quality so far ranges from poor and well below sub par, even in raw. This 12mp camera even with it's Leica lens deliver poor results and setting the menu quickly to capture the moment leaves you frustrated and leads to missing the shot. Only running in fully auto mode is relevant to quickly capturing shots, but even in low iso mode the photos are shockingly grainy, hazy, soft, have erratic focus, and are of very poor quality. The auto focus constantly despite all attempts to correct it leaves the desirable areas of your photo constantly out of focus, the focusing system is a total nightmare. As a photographer with over 50 years of experience I would have to classify this camera as the worst I have ever used, outdated in the extreme, producing very poor quality images, incredibly expensive, not suitable to quality photography and an extremely bad choice to be avoided in the extreme. I have already after extensive testing in varying conditions (over 400 photos) designated it to my last choice, just before relegating it to the dustbin of history. All in all a poor quality piece of junk that is outdated and not worth even considering purchasing, I have never experienced aworse camera product. It works, only very poorly, but that is not all that can be said for it, as the menu is a complete nightmare (disaster) and the most frustrating experience you will ever have with a camera of any brand. Best to leave it in full view in a insured car and hope someone steals it.

Versatile, great zoom range, fantalstic articulated screen.
25 November 2023

I shoot scenics, mostly nautical and coastal scenes, and do some commercial shoots, like real estate pix. I bought this to replace my old Lumix FZ-50, which I used for 15+ years until it developed a spot on the sensor or optics. The 50 was extremely versatile, with the fully articulated screen (like the 300 has). The 300 is even more so with a greater zoom range, both wide and tele. I only wish the 300 had the manual zoom the FZ-50 had. Resolution of JPGS is not as good as a good SLR-type camera and lens, but fine for most of my work and I don't have to lug much extra gear. If I need higher res I can shoot RAW. If you want versatile without a bag of lenses, this is a fine camera. (I also own a pro-type video camera so I don't know how this camera is for video.)
