But I had the chance to pick up a new 12-60 that was on sale at a great price - so I went ahead a pulled the trigger on one.When it arrived, I was surprised to see that it was a well constructed lens, was weatherproofed, had a metal lens mount, and both looked/balanced quite well on a variety of Micro 4/3 lenses. But more so, I found the optical performance to be superb! The sharpness levels I was getting with this lens had me smiling (out loud, if that's possible). Images were sharp across the frame and I became hooked. I'd have to now state that in my opinion, this is one of the finest kit lenses available from any brand that I know of (and I've tried quite a few of 'em).lI've fallen in love with this lens so much that I purchased two more of them - keeping one on my E-M5, one on my GH4, and one on my E-M10 Mk II. And that's where they'll stay because this lens is that good.Now there is one disclaimer - in that it is a given that copy to copy variations can exist with any lens. It's happened to many of us from time to time. But I must say, I now have 3 of these wonderful lenses - and all are excellent copies.So I give this a "highly recommended" considering it's low price point vs its stellar optical performance.Need I say more?Ben HerrmannFuquay Varina, NC

For me the Panasonic G85 is about balance and sufficiency. It has traditional DSLR handling, suitably downsized in the M4/3 system for less bulk and weight, yet retaining comfortable button and dial ergonomics. The touch screen is a big plus but I keep it mostly folded for protection after having customized the menus for my preferred shooting style with the camera centered at eye level. The uncannily silent shutter took some getting used to at first.Some might think 16 MP insufficient but it gives a sweet spot in pixel size and density to equal my Nikon APS-C DSLR in image quality. Also I prefer Panasonic's jpeg engine for color rendition out of camera to Nikon's more cold and sterile look or Sony's strange hues. Panasonic's raw files are also forgiving to work ... Grab one before the model is discontinued.

I'm still trying to get the settings on the camera to where I want, and had realized that the EVF did not appear to go into sleep mode. If I can adjust the sleep settings I can probably get more life out of that battery. I haven't had a chance to look into those setting yet...but that's when I realized...I shot from 9am to 5pm and got home with 945 images (RAW + Low Quality Jpegs.) That's 945 images from one battery, I still had one bar of life on the battery...and I think I can get more out of it!!!!!!!!!!!I finally had to stop ... I did open up the screen to change menu settings every now and then as needed. And, I was not TRYING to conserve battery power. If I wanted to do something with the camera, I did do it. (I do not shoot video, only stills.)This is not a one-time occurrence either, as I now recall that I did drain the battery at a prior shoot a few months earlier. However, that shoot provided 800+ Photos, RAW + Fine JPEG and occurred over a 12-hour period of time.So...my long winded point is that this bad boy WILL be kind to your battery!!! If you're a stills shooter...you can get by ALL DAY LONG with two batteries...easily!

I love this camera but I want to express my disappoinment about the American Panasonic customer service. B&H highlights on each Panasonic camera the so called extended warranty which is promised from Panasonic. After I have received my camera I've sent per email the required warranty documents for the body as well for the lens. An automatically written email came back at once that promised me that I soon will get a confirmation about this extended warranty. This was more than one year ago. I have never heard anything from them since. Meanwhile it is my second Panasonic camera from which I haven't got any answer about the promised extended warranty. When I read the reviews here, I read two things. 1. Great camera. 2. Worst customer service ever. Such a great company ... This is one of three Panasonic lenses that I own for my G9. The other two are primes that I use for street and video photography. I purchased this lens for a vacation trip where I anticipated doing a lot of hiking and did not want to carry my heavy DSLR with a comparable lens. I recently used this lens for vacation photos, landscapes, and some street photography on a trip. I am very happy with my choice since the results are sharp and the focus performance of the lens is great. My only complaint is that the hood does not snap on very securely and I needed to be careful not to lose it since it sometimes fell off when it rubbed against my pants. Personally, i view that as a minor problem since the overall performance of the lens is what I expected.
Very nice all around value lens to have which in my opinion is very underrated. Just got back from a autumn Smoky Mountain trip and this lens was the work horse. The only con to this lens is the vignetting you get on live view at wide angle 14mm. Why I gave it 4 stars. Just zoom in until the vignetting goes away and you?re ready to shoot. Works very well with the cameras auto focus. I shoot with my cameras live view set to on so what I see on screen is what a get, easy, If I ever break this lens I will absolutely buy again. This comes with many LUMIX cameras as a kit lens, so definitely a plus.
I am a freelance TV news correspondent for a small international news network who shoots his own interviews and broll on a Gh4. I was hired mainly for my journalistic talents and have been teaching myself to shoot over the last 3 years on the fly so despite being a professional TV reporter my actual talent/experience level with video is not that high. I expected this lens to be the answer to most of my day to day, running and gunning needs and it works well outdoors - the OIS is not great but usable. Autofocus is slow but you can work around this stuff.. What I am disappointed with is that it's nearly useless indoors without lights. On several occasions I've followed protesters inside of buildings on news shoots and had to pull out my Motorola smartphone to complete ... Once again, outdoors it is a great lens for filming news. Finally, I should have known better regarding the f/3.5-5.6, so live and learn.
People complain about the auto focus, but all you have to do is set it to face detection and adjust the sensitivity and done! The image is lovely, the video options are broad. People say the image is cold; however, there are a number of choices such as standard, vivid, etc, etc, to give you the warmth you need, or anything else. So silly. AND, for real camera people, we know this and also have post-editing for further options so it's not even an issue unless one does not understand what a menu option is.The kit lens is really good and if you don't like it (you may though) you have a vast assortment of other options both OEM and others.The magnesium body, solid feel and manual controls as well as menu selection and even touch screen make this so friendly regardless ... I do wish the main selection/options button was more embossed or stuck out further, but that's just because I'm old with less sensitivity in my fingers and a bit of callous -- hard to feel it without looking to know what I'm doing but it is so easy to use and getting used to where everything is took very little time.I also love my Canon, but the G85 Lumix is a happy purchase. I plan on using it for short films -- why? Because it can without having to go into the $3k and up range. Knowing what you're doing will let a camera like this work for you without regret. For those with a disposable income, get the Sony A7 or others but buy this camera and keep it for on the go B-Roll, you'll be glad you did.B&H was very helpful and it shipped very fast, packed well. It does not feel plasticky like some other mirrorless cameras out there.I always used the Canon DSLRs in the past but gave them to my daughter, who is now into photography. I was looking for a smaller but still reliable digital camera with great stills and video capabilities to capture our travels and outdoor activities. After weeks of online research, I decided to purchase the G85 and firmly believe it is one of the best mirrorless in its class. It is also robust and feels like a smaller SLR, i.e., it feels like you are holding a real camera, not a toy. Highly recommended.
The Panasonic G85 is a Fantastic Camera! I bought the G85 in order to evaluate the Micro Four Thirds format. I had only intended to use MFT as an always-handy second system that I could take to work, or travel, etc. My Nikon system would still be the 'Real Photography' set-up for studio shooting, etc.I exclusively used the G85 for several months in order to get familiar with its features and operation. When I went back to using my Nikon D7100 I was shocked at how many of the features I had grown used to with the Panasonic G85. Either camera will take fantastic photos, but here are a few things that I enjoy about the G85:- Tilt Screen. I've actually always preferred a fixed screen as that is one less moving part to cause trouble on a camera. However, one of the first things I missed when I went back to the D7100 was a tilting screen. I was working a table-top shot from above the table and my viewfinder was facing the ceiling...the D7100 was about 6" above my eye-level....and I had to get a stepping stool to frame-up the shot! Had I used the G85 I could have flipped the screen out to frame-up the shot. - Face/Eye Recognition. When doing a Senior portrait session earlier this month I had the D7100 and the G85 on-hand. The D7100 was my main shooter, and the G85 was packed as a backup-camera. In the end I used both cameras during the shoot with the G85's face/eye recognition nailing focus more often than the D7100 could. - Burst Speed with Raw: When shooting high-school track events the D7100's multi-frame burst stopped after about 5 frames when shooting RAW. The G85 has always taken as many frames as I wanted. (I usually need about 8-12 frames per burst.) I was shooting RAW+JPEG on these occasions. If I switch the D7100 to JPEG only it's fine, but I wanted RAW files for this particular shoot. The Nikon always stopped 2-3 frames too soon for what I was shooting. The G85 gave me all I wanted...and had more frames to give!- Stabilization: WOW! The 5-axis image stabilization works fantastic! For still subjects, you can absolutely shoot slower shutter speeds so that you can raise your ISO. It's another feature I never wanted...but now that I have...I don't want to ever give up!- Smaller, Lighter: I sure enjoyed carrying a large Nikon around...it just felt good and substantial in the hands. But there are advantages to a smaller and lighter set-up that delivers comparable images...so a nod goes to the G85 for portability. And the G85 still fits nicely in my large hands. The Cons:- The biggest con shooting the G85 vs the D7100 is that it's hard to follow fast action with the Electronic Viewfinder, I'm still trying to learn some techniques to better follow action with the EVF. (Biggest help is turning off auto-review!) That aside though, when looking through the G85's viewfinder I still feel like I'm using a DSLR...everything moves quite smoothly and I have no concept that I'm viewing an electronic image.Given this experience with the G85, I have considered combining my 2 systems into one system with a larger variety of lenses. However, I can only sell my Nikon equipment if the RAW files from the G85 will compare favorably to the RAW files from the D7100. I spent a weekend comparing shots between the two cameras with comparable lenses to see if I noticed any significant difference in the images produced. Aside from the fact that the D7100's 24MP files are physically bigger than the 16MP G85's, I could not find a substantial photographic difference between the two systems.I tried REAL hard to find out where the D7100's APS-C sensor would out-perform the G85...but could not find any comparison shot where the G85's image quality was lacking when compared to the Nikon D7100. The larger file size is the biggest advantage of the D7100 over the G85. (Although, when it comes to storage that's not an advantage either!) In the end, I concluded that I spent too many hours trying to find a significant difference between the files produced by the two cameras. If I can't find a clear difference after hours of comparing 20-30 images...then the cameras deliver equivalent images and that is no longer a factor in decidingwhich system will be my primary shooting system. The quality and features of the Lumix G85 have convinced me that I can have the light-weight system AND a serious system in one format. I now plan to sell my Nikon gear and add more variety to my lens collection. I'll be adding a second Panasonic body...and atthe moment I really want that to be a G85. (Well, I WANT it to be a G9...but I'll most likely replace the D7100 with another G85!)
