Don't let the MFT size sensor fool you. Shallow DOF is easily attainable. But it's not even always desirable as it's less of a concern for filmmaking. In that way, the MFT system seems ideal.I found it easy to adapt to other lens systems, especially for anamorphic shooting. MFT and vintage lens are affordable compared to L-mount lens.With a 25mm F1.8 the shallow DOF is substantial. But I also tested it with a Nikon 50mm f1.4 and 0.71x speedbooster and it feels like I I may be meeting or exceeding the DOF of Super 35mm (APS-C sized sensors). As a bonus, the GH5 Mark II has better IBIS than the S5 by a large margin. And you also get Open Gate anamorphic mode which uses the entire sensor to capture video.

I've considered saving up for a GH6 or an OM1, but reviews point out that the GH6 does great, high quality video and good stills and an OM1 does great stills and good video. The GH5M2 does great video and great stills.I'm a retired photojournalist, now shooting both photos and video for the Master Gardeners and the Habitat for Humanity and other charities. My videos tend to go to YouTube or are shown in classrooms or fundraisers. Of course, the GH5M2 shoots 4K, the GH6 goes up to 6K and you can set up a rig on the OM1 that will record ProRes Raw. I bought the gh5 roughly 6 months ago and pair it with the Leica 8-18mm, 25mm 1.7 and 42.5mm 1.7. The camera is insane bang for buck when it comes to video, photo quality is pretty good and lenses are relatively cheap compared to full frame. The camera also has some really helpful features like focus peaking, zebra pattern, and histogram. It's ergonamically fantanstic. The only downfall of this camera is the autofocus which pulses here and there, but I can just use manual. Also the low loght performance is weak. I typically use 1600 iso at most, but fast lenses help. This also helps me be a better photographer and chase light at night. For the price the camera is strong compared to the competition and with the gh6 coming out soon MFT will continue to have support. ... I've been mostly a stills shooter and am really just getting started with video, no professional work. The camera is robust and most of the controls are placed well, with the exception of the disp button which can too easily be inadvertently pushed. I wouldn't choose the GH5 if I were doing mostly stills, my Nikons are far better. But its great for video with a very reasonable selection of lens. Slow motion is great. Love the C1, C2 and C3, save settings and just switch to a preset and the camera is ready. As far as the 8-18 mm lens its fine but I ended up buying a 12-35 f2.8 and use that most of the time. I also have a 25mm f1.7 that I have used in lower light situations and the combination works great. I would definitely recommend this camera.
I ordered the GH5 ii on sale as a third camera to go with my two GH5s. The new menu system is great but somehow the footage looks noticeably worse than my GH5. The colors just don't look natural and there seems to be some smearing in the skin tones, shadows just look bad. I thought it might have been the noise reduction so I turned it down a couple of notches which made the image look a bit more natural but iso 3200 which I never had problems with is now nearly unusable at how grainy it is. The Cine D 2 is also unusable. It looks so blotchy and seeing some weird color shifting. I want to love this camera but I have had nothing but issues with it since I got it. I want to exchange it for another to see if its just my camera or is the OG GH5 better.
I moved to this kit from a relatively heavy DSLR setup. Two weeks in, enjoying it so far.Using it in daylight is no problem. When the light goes down, I can only use it at f/2.8 on the wide end. This is to be expected, same as my DSLRs except with constant f/2.8 zooms.Get a faster prime of your most used focal length, or a flash, if you use it a lot in low light, zoomed in.
Bought this initially for the extra stabilisation since I mainly film aerial subjects. It turns out this is essentially a new camera as opposed to a GH5 upgrade and now I'm selling my GH5. Color science has improved, raw stills are now 14bit and Panasonic have added DR into the highlights creating much better roll-off and toning. Some of the profiles like L Neo Classic and Flat give interesting options especially in able to give a Kodak Portra look when printed on paper. Stills auto focus is lightening fast and looks very capable in video though I prefer manual. Excellent cammera and value.

I use the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 mic adapter. It is (almost) perfect. (I wish the knobs had a little more resistance to them, they feel slippery and it makes me nervous.) Single shotgun mic with a y-adapter gives me great audio with a safety channel. BMPCC4K can't do that.V-Log L. It's included and it looks great as long as you're in 10bit.I love, love, love the GH5 II. It is totally underrated.(The GH6 is $500 more and what do you get? An extra stop of dynamic range at ISO2000 + bad streaking around windows and other bright light sources + mis-matched memory card slots + a body the size of a freight truck? Pffft. No thanks.)What would make the GH5 II better?- Full v-log, like its Panasonic FF brothers.- ProRes Proxy. That's right, I said proxy. I shoot 6k open gate and deliver HD on YouTube and Bluray. Proxy is plenty. I like my file sizes small and easily digestible, thank you.
