Replacing your chain at the right time is key to getting the most out of your chain rings and cassettes. If you are on Campag, this is absolutely essential. Campag chains should be changed very shortly after 0.5% wear is indicated. Relax. Record chains will take a long time to show this much wear. On Shimano, change at 0.75% wear. Do this & you will get 5, 6 chains to each cassette. Ignore it & it’s a new chain & new cassette every time.Easy to use, cheap to buy. What is there not to like?

Initially I contenplated between this CC-3.2 and the other CC-4. I'm glad I decided on CC-3.2 because of its simplicity, value, and does what it supposed to be. I was intrigued by CC-4's "3 touch points", I don't think it's necessary. CC-3.2's "2 touch points" is plenty sufficient/accurate and simpler/easier to use. Also, I like a quick yes/no answer (with CC-3.2 or CC-4) than an inbetween/range answer (with CC-2) for chain wear.

A worn stretched chain will destroy your cassette and cause chain drops and poor shifting. Use this simple gauge to know when to replace chain before it destroys more expensive drivetrain components.

Great chain checker - Well made, looks great, feels great in the hand
3 May 2020

I'll admit this chain checker is a bit over-the-top. Park Tool's CC-3.2C chain checker is simpler, cheaper, and will do the job just as well. This tool, however, feels fantastic when held and is very nice to use. It appears to be machined from solid aluminium bar stock in black and Park Tool blue. The inscriptions clear and don't feel cheaply printed. Even the sticker on the handle of the tool seems to be well-made. One could definitely get by with a simpler tool, making this chain checker a luxury, but in the sense of it being a luxury it is well worth it.

How did I live without it?
18 February 2021

For years, I knew that a chain could wear out just like anything else, but I had no idea how to see how far gone a chain was. Not long ago a friend showed me how to use his chain checker and from then on I was sold. I had to have one. It has since paid for itself when I was restoring an old bicycle. It needed a new chain, but I didn't have the money or time to go get one. I happened to have an old frame sitting around that still had the chain on it, so I took my new chain checker and found out that this chain was still in good shape. A little elbow grease and the chain was as good as new. Couldn't have done it without my chain checker.

If you bicycle a lot, you need this.
23 November 2016

I've always used a ruler to measure my chain wear. That is until I was having shifting problems on my commuter bike. I adjusted the derailleur, I cursed a lot, and measured my chain (it showed almost no stretch). Finally when I was lubing my chain, I noticed a broken plate on the outside of the chain. This told me that there was wear going on that measuring wasn't catching. So based on other reviewers, and the quality of most Park tools, I took the plunge and ordered this. It isn't cheap but it's well worth it. I again measured my chain using a ruler and it only showed about 1/32" stretch. Then I used this tool and it showed over the .75% mark on the gauge. Well past time to put a new chain on. I put a new chain on and it shifts like new again.

Inaccurate
25 December 2020

I have a 11 speed, and it is recommended to replace the chain after 0.5% wear. I have a brand new chain on with only two test rides, so not even broken in. This tool says it is 0.5% worn, so according to this I should replace my brand new chain. I checked with a caliper and it's measurement says it is slightly less than 0.0% - meaning it confirmed my brand new chain is brand new without any wear.So this expensive toy is inaccurate. For the price it needs to be way more precise. I will be returning it.

The Park Tool chain checker solved my problem about my stretched chain and a closer inspection revealed a wore out cassette also.Replaced both parts and back on the road again. The chain checker is 5 stars in my book!

The CC-3.2 Can Save You Money in the Long Run
15 June 2020

I'd rather ride than do regular maintenance on my bikes, and that can get me into trouble. I'm guilty of riding my chain past the early warning signs of replacement and in turn wear out the cassette and chainrings. That gets expensive. This tool couldn't be less time-consuming and easy to use, and it will more than pay for itself. It's so simple that you almost feel like the tool isn't needed. Check for chain wear religiously, replace chains as needed, and you'll extend the life of your other drivetrain components that are more costly. My household has 6 bikes in its fleet. At the same time I ordered this tool, I had also ordered a chain and cassette, expecting to do a replacement on a comfort road bike that is primarily used for bad weather and unpaved MUTs. ... MoreI'd rather ride than do regular maintenance on my bikes, and that can get me into trouble. According to the CC-3.2, the current chain doesn't need replaced yet, so the bike should make it through the summer and maybe also the fall before that chain needs replaced. That new cassette may end up waiting even longer before it is needed.

Worth the Investment
21 August 2022

I didn't have a chain checker before this and I think it would have been worth it to buy earlier. These are the simple kind that tell you just whether it's past .5 or .75; they don't tell you the actual amount of wear. For the price I think I could have gotten one earlier and saved piece of mind. If you don't know how to use this or a novice it's very easy to learn and can save you hassle of going to the shop. One of the most bang for your buck beginning cycling tools.
