This is the best portable chain tool if you're shopping for a dedicated one because you found those little doohickeys that come on most folding multitools don't work so well. It's surprisingly strong and a reasonable size to get some leverage. Made in the USA too, pinch me...If you want even more leverage, you can hack the sliding arm off so you can insert a 4mm hex from the multitool I presume you're also carrying. Makes breaking chains substantially easier, and it's a smidge lighter and less awkward to pack.

Well made as always with Park Tool. Perhaps not workshop grade for daily activities but for the keen home mechanic is ideal. Small enough to carry for longer adventures or leave in your car at base. Pleased.

Purchased this to install a new chain on a fixed gear bike. Had no problems using it and REI was the only local shop carrying a chain breaker tool. Not sure how different a full size tool would be. I thought it was rather simple breaking a chain with this tool and it’s small enough to fit into my bike tool kit. I’d purchase it again

This worked perfectly. This is a sturdy tool and easy to use. Ive worked on my vehicles, motorcycles, atvs, bicycles, etc..and this too was quite simple to use. The instructions that come with the tool were helpful. I havent taken links out of a bicycle chain before and this tool and instructions made it a breeze. I would definitely purchase this again and would recommend it.
Purchased the Park Tool CT-5 mini chain tool to break & resize a new Shimano chain for my road bike. As my experience has been with other Park Tools, this US made tool effectively does what it was designed to do and there are instructions included in the package as well as online for guidance. Park Tool even makes replaceable pins when/if you need them. A quality made tool that comes with a lifetime warranty.
This is a really excellent little chain tool. I have workshop tools from Park Tool but needed something that can be carried in my saddle bag on a ride. In conjunction with a quick link from the chain manufacturer this tool is all I need to repair a broken chain away from home.
Gets the job done when you’re on the road or trail. Solid tool that’s easy to use. I would not use this as my shop tool since it takes quite a bit of force to push a pin with this, but in a pinch away from home it works fine. Fairly light and easy to put in a seat bag with a spare quick link.
I've owned my CT-5 chain tool for over three years. Used it to size many chains--well over 2 dozen successfully pushed out pins, and because I use Shimano chains on my Shimano drivetrains, approximately 2/3 of the breaks were accompanied by connecting pin insertions. All successful: no prematurely broken guide pin and none of the joined chains has separated under heavy MTB use.The tool's pin is still the original that came with it. With the chain fully inserted in the tool, the tool's pin contacts the chain pin dead center and remains in perfect alignment under force. Other chain tools I've used in the past were nowhere near as durable and accurate as Park Tool's CT-5. It just continues to impress.
This is a great light weight tool, to always have on the road or trail. Even a relative new chain can unexpectedly fail under the a powerful rider pedaling forces or a miss-shift experience entangling chain into failure. It may require a little more hand strength to use than a full-size shop chain tool, but in an emergency in the boondocks it can save a long walk home. Be sure to always have a spare link of two of chain and a spare master link on hand. But if you only lose a link or two, simply reconnect chain and be cognizant that you may not be able to shift onto some of the larger rear cogs until a replacement chain of correct length is installed.
Pros:• Feels sturdy in the hand.• Functioned smoothly when installing my new chain.• No signs of wear on the tool during and after first use (no grinding when turning the handle, no flexing or bending in the tool).Cons:• Could be a touch on the pricey side if it doesn't last?I am happy with the CT-5 Mini Chain tool. I originally purchased a cheaper chain brute tool prior to purchasing this one. I thought that I could save money. What I found was the cheaper tool broke immediately on first use. I should have gotten this Park Tool chain brute in the first place.
