Patagonia Atom Sling 8L - The take-it-everywhere classic sling design with just the right amount of organization and close-fitting comfort. The go-anywhere Atom Sling carries the fundamentals with all the comfort of a backpack, the convenience of a shoulder bag and the ergonomic, low-profile performance of a courier's tote. The Atom's teardrop shape keeps the pack right behind your shoulders where it stays out of the way when you're moving through crowded streets and subway terminals. When you need to grab something, the single-strap design lets you rotate the Atom to the front for quick access. The large, zippered main pocket holds your lunch and extra clothes; it has a dedicated, padded tablet sleeve for your hand-held electronics. Sized for essentials, the zippered outside pocket features a key clip and keeps your passport and sunglasses handy. A convenient stretch mesh pocket on the chest/shoulder strap accommodates a wide variety of phone sizes, and adjustable exterior compression straps manage different-sized loads such as securely holding a yoga mat or rain shell. Breathable 3-D spacer mesh pads the shoulder strap and back panel to wick moisture, dry quickly and increase ventilation. Made from 630-denier 100% nylon (50% recycled/50% high-tenacity) plain weave. The lining is 200-denier 100% recycled polyester. Both with a polyurethane coating and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish.

The Patagonia sling is hands down the best sling for mininmalist EDC. I have been obsessed with sling bags for the last couple of years, searching in stores and on line for the ultimate sling. I currently have 5 slings by 3 different brands (Waterfly, Mosiso & Patagonia). I carry either a 20 or 32 liter hydro flask (both fit it the deceptively "small" front zipper compartment), wallet, 1st aid kit, multi tool, lighter, umbrella, packable shopping bag, phone, back up battery pack and cord, hand sanitizer and hand cream. all these items fit inside this pack WITH ROOM TO SPARE. I can definitely attach an outer layer like a rain jacket or cardigan using the external straps. I am a busty female and the strap is comfortably padded on my shoulder and hangs well on my back. The strap is long enough to accommodate my plus sized frame comfortably and the extra strap length is held down by an elastic band so the excess strap length isn't annoying flapping against your body or dangling loose. The strap unbuckles in the front so I don't have to put it over my head to take it off if I don't want to. The sling is designed to sit only on the right shoulder so that when the bag is pulled around all pockets are easily accessible while the bag is still on the body. After using other slings that allow for switching shoulders but are not as accessible while the sling is on my body, I prefer the easy access of the pockets to the ability to switch shoulders. The design of this sling is so thoughtful and comprehensive I have to give it five stars. This sling will be my go to bag for the foreseeable future.

Since you dropped the waist belt in V5, add a third leg chest strap to keep from sliding around when riding a bike.6. Expandable idea - make it with some side zippers to expand the volume.7. Add one half or one inch to the length of this bag. I carry two one-liter water bottles in my Version 3 bags and this is great for going light and free in the back country with my dog. The current Version 4 is too short.9. Dump the huge haul handle at the top and add more zipper (see V1-4) so I can open this bag up and get to my stuff. Put the haul loop back on the base of the strap like V4.Thanks for listening!Scoot

Disappointed

I have two Patagonia atom 8L bags in the previous iteration and I really love them, but with the change of seasons the rougher mesh backing is a bit too abrasive on nylon jackets. I was seeking a similar bag as a replacement. I use them as an EDC as opposed to a purse. I noticed Patagonia recently introduced a new version with some interesting new colors and features. I decided to give one a try. I love the color, but I personally feel the bag is much bulkier than my previous one. Being a larger chested woman, the pocket on the strap is so uncomfortable even without the phone inside. I know others love being able to carry their phone in the chest strap pocket, but its entirely too bulky and obtrusive. Ive never carried my phone in the strap pocket anyway. Being a larger chested woman, the pocket on the strap is so uncomfortable even without the phone inside. I know others love being able to carry their phone in the chest strap pocket, but its entirely too bulky and obtrusive. Ive never carried my phone in the strap pocket anyway. The front pocket of the bag offers more space than the previous model, however the very short key clip is located here, so I attached my large key fobs here along with my small wallet. I do not want my keys scratching other items. Patagonia please make your key clip attachments longer so you dont have to remove your keys from the bag when using them. A small improvement when trying to unload groceries or herd children into the house. The main compartment has been divided. In theory its a great idea, but for practical purposes I felt that I was not able to carry nearly as much in this compartment due to the bulky divider. I only carry a spare pair of prescription eyeglasses, tissues, hand lotion, a small hairbrush, a pack of gum, and my iPhone SE which did not fit well in the main compartment even if I split these items within this divided pocket. I am aware other people like to carry their iPads/ tablets with them daily, but I feel this bag was originally designed as a small daily carry due to its size. I do not want to carry my iPad with me when out and about running errands or on a hike. I only used the bag for a few days thinking I would adjust to it, but I could not wear it comfortably. Frustrated, I checked out the Patagonia ultra light black hole sling 8L. So far I am enjoying the weight, the three zippered compartments, and the strap is not as bulky as the atom. Much easier to adjust the strap. I keep a small hand sanitizer in the open stretchy strap pocket. If it falls out when I slide the bag around, its not a big deal. Wish Patagonia offered more colors in the ultra light black hole sling. I prefer the ultra light black hole sling 8L over the newer version of the atom.

Great bag in theory, poor design
20 June 2023

I wanted to like this bag so much. It's the perfect size for daily carry and travel, and I actually find the lack of organization a plus (I use bag organizers to hold smaller items so I'm able to easily transfer them between the different bags I use.) My main gripe - and It's a big one - is the strap. As a few other reviewers have noted, it chafes uncomfortably against bare skin if you happen to be wearing it with, say, a t-shirt. The bag also starts drooping whenever it has anything slightly heavy in it - which necessitates constant adjustments, and more chafing. And the pocket on the strap is next to useless. The bag also starts drooping whenever it has anything slightly heavy in it - which necessitates constant adjustments, and more chafing. And the pocket on the strap is next to useless. The stretchy fabric is useful for stashing a phone or wallet - but the only way I can use it that way is to wear the bag uncomfortably close and high on my torso so the pocket lies flat against my chest. Most of the time, the pocket sits where my neck and shoulder meet - which makes it useless for anything solid (though a bandanna fits in it nicely - I've taken to wrapping one around the strap where it touches my neck to help minimize the chafing.) A strap that detaches completely from the bag would allow me to swap it out for a more comfortable one; at the very least, there should be buckles for adjustment on both ends of the strap) for those of us with larger frames. And as other users have also said, it would be much better to have a bag that can be worn over both shoulders both to mitigate strain on one side when the bag is packed full and for personal preference. I find it hard to believe that Patagonia did any real-life testing on this with actual users. Hopefully the next iteration will be better.

Great little pack for every day and my walks
16 November 2022

I came across this bag when searching for something I could carry while walking for exercise. I go at least 4 miles/6k each walk and wanted a bag that wasn't big or bulky, yet large enough for the essentials I carry with me: a 40 or 60oz water bottle, my keys, electrolyte tablets, medication, lip balm, phone, and a few other small things. This bag has been perfect! I use the largest compartment for my water bottle and the padding in the back wall of the bag prevents the bottle from digging into my back. The outer compartment is where I keep almost all my other stuff. And I stick my lip balm and some tissues in the little compartment on the strap for easy access while on the move. I've used the bungee cords on the outside to hold shirts that I've taken off after getting too warm, and I can also hook safety lights and reflectors onto them. The padded strap is very nice so nothing digs into me, and the strap is easy to both tighten and loosen when I need to swing the bag forward and back to get my water bottle. Clearly I am VERY excited about this little thing and feel it was a great purchase. (And from a great company!) My mobility feels so much more free while walking so it's made my walks even more enjoyable.

I have the old model atom 8 sling. Its a very robust bag but internal space is limited by the curved design. Great for Asia wander pack but limited if you just want that little more space.Tried this bag. Its better shaped in the body but come on Patagonia, dump the ridiculous strap pouch. You got 2 comments on this pouch on the old bag, the first being it was too small, the second being it was unusable due to position near neck. On my old version this pouch curves over the shoulder. If I put a phone in it I have a fixed flat section in a curved should strap right near my neck. How could you consider this comfortable. So your solution is to make it bigger to fix one problem and make the other problem worse, so bad that the bag is not fit for purpose.Larger people ... MoreI have the old model atom 8 sling. If I put a phone in it I have a fixed flat section in a curved should strap right near my neck. How could you consider this comfortable. So your solution is to make it bigger to fix one problem and make the other problem worse, so bad that the bag is not fit for purpose.Larger people buy this sling. Have you had a sample of people wear it and assessed on how many the pouch actually sits mid chest. The see how tall they are. Maybe 160 cm.Also i note you have made the front pocket bigger. A great change but it is still part of the main bag capacity, i.e., it takes up internal space. Make it a seperate compartment that no matter how full the main compartment is, it still retains its full separate usable capacity.Do this and you will have the perfect travel sling.

The Patagonia Atom Sling is a backpack that truly stands out in terms of both design and functionality. As someone who cares deeply about the environment, I appreciate Patagonia's commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. And this commitment is reflected in the quality and durability of the Atom Sling. With a capacity of 8 liters, this backpack may seem small, but it's incredibly versatile and can hold more than you might think. The weight of the backpack is also a huge plus. The main compartment has a zippered pocket to hold your phone and other small items, as well as a key clip to keep your keys organized. The front pocket is also very useful for storing smaller items, such as your wallet or sunglasses. One of the standout features of this backpack is the single-strap design. It allows you to quickly and easily swing the bag around to the front for easy access to your belongings. This is especially useful when you're on the go and need quick access to your phone or wallet. Additionally, the backpack is made from high-quality recycled materials, which is a great feature for those who are environmentally conscious.Overall, I highly recommend the Patagonia Atom Sling. It's a great backpack for everyday use, and its small size and lightweight design make it a versatile option for those who need a bag that won't weigh them down. The quality of the materials is excellent, and the attention to detail is impressive. Whether you're commuting to work or exploring the great outdoors, this backpack is a reliable and stylish choice that you can feel good about using.

Perfect for travel!

I got this bag for a trip to Europe and it was a dream. I usually use the 20L tote but it's cumbersome to take it all the way off and dig around in the inner pocket for my wallet every time I want to buy something, and also it's all too easy to just unthinkingly slip my phone into one of the side mesh pockets, which is great when hiking, not so great when stepping onto a crowded train where a pickpocket might take advantage. The atom sling solved all my problems--the way it's designed, it hangs on your back like a backpack, but you can instantly swing it to the front to retrieve your wallet or stash a purchase, without it leaving your body. And when you sit down, if it's a less secure area, like a busy food hall or train, you can drop the strap and the bag easily ... MoreI got this bag for a trip to Europe and it was a dream. And when you sit down, if it's a less secure area, like a busy food hall or train, you can drop the strap and the bag easily sits next to you or on your lap while still being completely attached to your body. The front pocket was great for holding my wallet, there's a clip in there too, so I clipped the wallet to it so it could never accidentally drop or fall out. The main section is divided into two roomy compartments and I could fit so much in there, everything I needed for a day out and about, including a water bottle. It doesn't have the volume of the tote of course, but I stuck a little folded up lightweight shopping bag in there and if I grocery shopped or bought something bulky during the day, I pulled that out and stashed everything in there. The padded shoulder zip pocket was cool, I think it's for a phone but it was too inconvenient to pull the phone in and out of there all the time, so I used it for my train pass, and that worked great. I'm excited to use it on short hikes too!

Pretty great, minor issues

This bag fits the magic category of: can fit an iPad and daily gear but is otherwise tiny. That said, an iPad Pro 11” with Magic Keyboard won’t fit into the padded sleeve – you’ll need to put it in the main compartment.I got the yellow one. It’s brighter than the sun.It fits within the restrictive bag size limits for things like sporting events (MLB game), unlike a messenger bag, for example. Also, it looks oddly like a guitar / instrument bag when unfolded… which doesn’t really factor into the review but is nevertheless true. The gear straps are the most useful implementation of that kind of strap I’ve ever seen. Fantastic. The front pocket (for a phone) is surprisingly big and useful, but does show things through the mesh in some circumstances.I appreciate that ... MoreThis bag fits the magic category of: can fit an iPad and daily gear but is otherwise tiny. Also, it’s fairly inexpensive for the quality of the bag, so I feel like minor issues are easy to forgive.
