I've had a black hole backpack for about 15 years (which I still use for travel) but wanted a newer daily backpack for walking commutes to work.Overall, this newer pack is more refined that the older one. Curve of the pack, padding, and straps are more comfortable. The material is a bit thinner and lighter than its predecessor, which could impact its long term durability? Love the padded laptop pocket. Main compartment is roomy. Zippers are smooth, high quality. Good elastic on the side water bottle pockets, holds bottles well without slipping out.Typical Patagonia product, will probably last forever.

Additionally, the full water bottles, were easy to carry and I did not feel as if they would fall out.I saw YouTube videos online, complaining about the lack of internal storage. However, one of my complaints of my Mystery Ranch bags, was that internal storage would catch on items as I am trying to stuff them into the bag. The Black Hole had no problems sliding items in, or opening big enough to get them out. Additionally, it seems that the bag is more water resistant than similarly sized Mystery Ranch and Osprey bags. They only (Small complaint is similar to that of other reviewer; that there is no protective laptop sleeve. The laptop compartment is quite wide and long so no worries about it accommodating a 17" laptop. However, I would be worried to carry a laptop without a protective case if I were traveling, as I feel that the two corners of the computer closest to the bottom of the bag would not have ample protection, and may end up taking some harder bumps if the bag was set down too hard. Other than that, I love this bag. The outside pocket is big enough for my 8 x 5 but thick Tul notebook / organizer that I use at meetings, the top pocket is large enough for medium books plus essentials like pencil cases, wallets, sunglass case, snacks, etc. Water bottle storage is FANTASTIC. The interior is exactly the roomy space that I need. Overall, I would recommend this bag.

Maybe I’m just not doing it right. But still mildly inconvenient when I’m trying to get something out in a hurry.Nonetheless, I highly recommend this product. It’s perfect for commuting either on the train or bike and it looks great!

I waited a year to buy this backpack. I have the 25L and I LOVE it and the little bit of extra space and separate computer compartment offered by the 32L made it seem like the backpack of my dreams. Unfortunately the adjustable part of the straps is about an inch and a half too short meaning that I cannot tighten them enough for seat the pack comfortably on myself. When I wear it I find myself constantly pulling the straps down to try and raise the pack, or putting my hands on the inside of the straps for the same purpose. The pack also does not easily stand up by itself if you use the very front pocket, as soon as something it in there it just wants to roll forward.I also really wish that it had some of the smaller pockets that are in the 25L for smaller items ... MoreI waited a year to buy this backpack. The top pocket is also large enough that it could use a mesh pocket on the inside. Finally, I'm just not a fan of the matte fabric it's made of. I prefer the denier. My 25L is the shiny denier and it seems to be holding up better.I also wish that both packs had simple waist straps. Especially the 25L as there are times I would like to run with it.
I'm a big fan of this company and have bought many items over the years. They've been good to me and I really grappled with posting this review as it's not my way, but I'm confused by this bag on all fronts. It feels iterative for iterations sake: the computer pocket is large, fine, but the zipper jams all the time on the excess material that is occupying the corner creases; the top pocket frequently dumps my items out on the floor when I open the main compartment and though it's big enough for a book, which I like, it operates in a liminal space that lacks specificity; the main compartment is big enough to hold big items, if it's not packed to its limit, the whole thing folds down on itself and loses any sense of itself. The addition of the handles on the front was ... MoreI'm a big fan of this company and have bought many items over the years. As well, the addition of the baggage strap between the shoulder straps.I leave for Thailand tomorrow and I'm gutted that I'm digging through other bags I've collected over the years, looking for an option that can help me out and not get in the way like I've found this one to...The first gen of these really rocked: I loved the fold down pouch; i used to not clip it and bike all of my groceries home with the added space. When it was falling apart after a solid decade of use, Patagonia replaced the base and some of the straps at no cost. That was some years ago.I just bought my daughter a little backpack and as stoked as I am for her to grow into it, I feel let down by this current product and wish I could go back in time and buy more of the original or just give this to someone who cares to navigate its idiosyncrasies. I really am not saying everything was better back when, I just wish this product was better. Like, be better!I choose climbing as a reco cause maybe if it was stuffed with ropes it would net out even, but the weight distribution is just wack.
I am sad to say how utterly disappointed I am in this pack. I bought the Black Hole to replace the 32L Fuego that I have dragged around the world for many years and absolutely loved. I couldn’t find anything by Patagonia that came close to this awesome pack, but wanted to stick with Patagonia, so thought I would give the Black Hole a try. I really had such high hopes for it, but unfortunately, the design is incredibly impractical. This bag is pretty much useless if you actually want to carry anything other than a computer and a sweatshirt. I really hate being negative, so I'll start with the positive things I found.Positive:The side water bottle pouch holds a large hydro flask. I really hate being negative, so I'll start with the positive things I found.Positive:The side water bottle pouch holds a large hydro flask. The computer pocket is well padded and easy to access when going through security (HOWEVER, if the bag has anything packed to capacity in the main compartment, access becomes difficult). The top and front handle make it convenient to grab. The purple color is pretty. What’s wrong:It is a 32L bag that loses MOST of that capacity in the main compartment. If you actually fill the smaller outside top area, as well as the front pocket, and carry a computer there is barely room for anything else. The filled top pocket is in the way of the main compartment, so when it is packed it is almost impossible to access anything from the main compartment or the front pocket. Then, the content of the top pocket spills out when you open it unless it is standing upright (so accessing under your seat on a plane is impossible without pulling the bag out. There aren’t enough inner stash pockets/dividers for small items such as money, passport, or phone, and the ONE that is inside is impossible to get to when it is packed because it is smooshed against the inside back of the bag. There is also so there is no sunglass pouch or place for more delicate items anywhere.I'm not sure what this bag would be good for, but it is not for travel in any way. Maybe for school or work if you only need to carry a computer and a light jacket? Patagonia dropped the ball on this design for sure!
I spent so much time looking for a new backpack, and after hours and hours of looking, I went for the red 32L blackhole backpack. I used to commute 2 hours everyday to work, and this would hold all my essentials, bible, food, you name it. I love the black hole design as the top zipper is almost like a purse. Throw little trinkets, a book, headphones, charger, it can hold a ton and it's super easy access (as long as you don't completely clutter it!) At first, I was originally a little disappointed because I thought it only had 3 zippers, (The black hole, laptop compartment, and main storage area.) But I wanted a special place to keep my Bible specifically. But after about a week, I realized there was a whole new zipper and solid size storage area right on the front of the bag that I missed because the zipper was hidden so well!! I was mind blown that i missed that. That little storage area seems like it was designed specifically to hold my Bible, my most precious item, and just brought me much joy to have such a perfect pocket to slide my bible in and out of. Ever since I started utilizing that pocket, this bag has been absolutely perfect for me. I love the size, love how it feels, and I think it's actually quite stylish. Thank you Patagonia for I truly am thankful for this bag!
I wanted to trade in my ten year old beloved Timbuktu messenger bag. My day to day work needs require that I bring rain gear, snow gear, puffy pants and jacket, a microfleece, and gloves in addition to my laptop and normal office supplies. All of that and more fits easily into this bag. Setting up presentations in unknown and remote venues means that I pack a lot with me. I can fit a 50 foot hdmi cable, extension cord, power point accoutrement, highlighters, mints, chapsticks, a small aquaphor, ibuprofen and other bits and bobs in the top zipper compartment. The front contains a couple of flat notebooks and whatever else I stuff in. The only downside I have found so far is that I need to pick up some small packet organizers of some sort so that things don't get lost ... MoreI wanted to trade in my ten year old beloved Timbuktu messenger bag. The handle seems to be ergonomic and simple to use. I feel like the pack fits my frame well even when fully loaded and my computer, charger, and notebook fit in the back compartment well. I like that one side doesn't zip open fully, keeping the contents from dumping unexpectedly.I'm in LOVE with the matte material. Honestly, the eye catching shine was my biggest gripe with the black hole line before. I'm absolutely here for the low key vibe.
This is the best bag I have tried in a decade....that's how long I've been searching for a new "main bag!" Overall the bag is typical Patagonia awesomeness. Great materials, great construction, good fit, etc. What sets this bag apart is the way it opens. The large "flip top" makes it super-easy to slide packing cubes or other large items in and out. And the smaller "flip lid" pocket is a fantastic separate space for items like hats, phones, etc. It'll swallow a couple of Patagonia trucker caps without crushing them....even when the bottom of the bag is stuffed. I've done two weekend trips with nothing but this one bag--which is rare for me. I'd love to see a smaller zipper pocket somewhere inside this top zone for delicate/valuable items, but that's my only ... MoreThis is the best bag I have tried in a decade....that's how long I've been searching for a new "main bag!" I purchased the 32 L black hole in addition to my 25 L because I needed just a little bit more room sometimes. I had been borrowing a 32 L and successfully traveled for a few days using it as an airplane carry-on. When traveling in the cities and using subways, it’s nice to not conspicuously carry luggage and this fits the bill perfectly. It’s big enough to carry stuff, but not so big that it looks like you’re on a trek through the urban jungle. The backpack that I purchased is different, though, than the one that I had been borrowing and some of the design changes are good, and others not so much. The new design has the laptop sleeve zipper in a much better location, but the internal part that holds the laptop is not as good and the laptop flops around a bit more. ... MoreI purchased the 32 L black hole in addition to my 25 L because I needed just a little bit more room sometimes. Also, the previous designs were 100%, the same color, including zippers, and the back, which gave it neat character. The revised design does not carry that color scheme forward. All in all, this is a great product, and Patagonia is an incredible company that stands by its customers, so I stand by it. I also know that they read the reviews and listen and hope that this may contribute to the design progression.
