Backpack Strap

Just received the duffel and happy with it (before using) until I tried, along with my engineering husband, to attach the padded backpack straps. There are clips on one end, no brainer. Then at the other end of the strap there is a rectangle with a very short piece of strapping material holding it to the strap. On the bag end, there is a "D" ring--nothing else. No directions were included, so we both figured there is "something" missing. After calling Patagonia Customer Service, Tyler told me that you thread the rectangle through the "D" ring and turn the rectangle. Definitely a challenge to negotiate with such a short piece of material stitched to the "D" ring.I was told I could return the bag unused up until a year. Nice return policy; however, I like the bag and don't know whether the back straps will make or break the multi use of the duffel.I think this issue could have been avoided by including "how to" directions and adding even just a half inch more strapping to the "D" ring. Maybe the issue, in the long run, is that the strapping stretches. Won't know that for a while.

The Black Hole Duffel has been on my list for a long time but has not been in the budget. I was fortunate enough to find it on super sale due to irregularities at the outlet and I feel like I have won the lottery! Such a super useful bag that I am certain we will enjoy for many, many years. Got two of the 55L and it feels like a magicians bag that you can keep fitting everything in and never max it out. All that and it is still easily carried via handles and even better with the super easy to put on and off, back pack straps. Perfect bag for (non backpacking) camping and roadtrips and I am looking forward to our next trip and the ease and efficiency these bags will offer for packing! I purchased this bag because I already have two black hole duffels (45 & 55 L) from Patagonia. I wanted to get a larger bag to use for some international travel. The group I was traveling with required soft side bags because transporting them in the back of a van for our visit will allow more bags to be packed in a tight space. This bag works very well for that purpose.I also really like the back pack straps that allow the bag to be carried easily when a cart is not available. Admittedly, they are not the most comfortable straps in the world and I would not consider backpacking with this bag but they work quite well for short walks in the airport or to get to your base camp or hotel. Maybe if it wasn't packed full, but it would depend on how strict the person is watching you board the plane. I don't plan on trying to use it as a carry on - I have the 55L for that if I need to. This bag shines as a rugged and water resistant piece of luggage. My only concern when I pack is to make sure I stay under the weight limit. All in all, I am very happy to add it to my options for travel.

I miss the old design
29 December 2023

I recently replaced a 12 year old 60L Black Hole with this newer 55L because the waterproof material started warping and flaking off. I was glad to get a matte version of this bag, and I understand that Patagonia has a different way of measuring bag capacity for more accuracy now, hence the different sizes. This bag actually seems bigger than my old one, but not in a good way. I used to pack mine to the brim and easily carry it around in airports, train stations, etc., either with the top straps, the side handles, or shoulder straps. I tried that with this one, and it was just so unwieldy. The bag seems wider which causes issues with the weight distribution. The side handles are also a lot more narrow, and have rough edges now which are very uncomfortable and feel like they are cutting into the skin. I woke up incredibly sore the next day after lugging this around on a trip. I feel like this redesign missed the mark, and now I miss my old bag, warts and all.

The first time using my 55L duffle bag was on a short trip to Tennessee for only five days. I had more than enough room for what I wanted to take; however, it was still full enough to make it difficult to carry with just the straps. As I trudged through the airport, it felt heavier and heavier. To my frustration, I was disappointed that I didn't bring my small roller suitcase. When I arrived home, I realized there were straps included in the packing to haul it around like a backpack. Yes! Since then I have used it numerous times and it works like a charm! The only suggestion for change is to add another zippered pock inside to put clothes that were worn and ready for washing so they stay separate of everything else. One zippered pocket is not enough. Ideal for ski trips

This massive bag can swallow gear and clothing making it ideal for ski trips. I found the 70L to be just a bit too small for a two-week international ski trip. I also have no idea why there are straps that go across the interior of the duffel that are not removable - all they do is get in the way.I got this duffel as an update from 20+ year-old Base Camp Duffels I've used forever. Is this duffel worth the premium? That's a personal call, but I am overall not disappointed.

Must have do it all bag!

I own 6 of these specific bags and 4 other blackhole variants from Patagonia. As a family we use them for everything - they are virtually indestructible. The simple robustness of the construction allows them to hold well beyond what you will be comfortable carrying for their size. They travel well, we take them with us whether flying or driving and whether we are going to the city or the wilderness. We have used them to carry groceries to Manhattan apartments and to hold an entire camp kitchen set up when overlanding in the mountains... they can do it all. The dust/water flap zipper covers, stow away large pocket, backpack straps, grab handles and multiple loops for securing the bags marry perfectly to cement the "do it all" capabilities of these awesome bags. As a bonus, they look great and the blackhole aesthetic really defines the space in my opinion. The multiple colors are also functional as they allow you to own several and designate color to purpose or person when traveling with multiple bags. Lastly, as with all Patagonia products, they are built to last - I still have and use a first gen wheeled blackhole suitcase/bag... and it is going strong. I highly recommend.

Sturdy Duffel

I just took this 55L duffel on a trip. Used it as a carry on and didn't have any issues with the size. I didn't overfill it, and it fit the dimensions. It was sturdy and I wouldn't hesitate to use it as a checked bag. The backpack straps are easy to remove and stow. I wanted a bag that I could carry on but could store in another, larger bag as I travel so that I could condense things down to one bag on longer trips where I need flexibility. This bag folds down and doesn't take up much room when folded. It's also light weight. When in the airport and waiting in line, I turned the bag so that it was the long way up. It has a web handle, and I could grab and move the bag as I moved through the line without having to bend down. Made it easier to lug around in an ... MoreI just took this 55L duffel on a trip. Made it easier to lug around in an airport. The backpack straps worked well to carry it around. I don't think that it would be comfortable to carry long distances, but I wouldn't expect that from a duffel.

The perfect solution for me

We started wilderness packrafting in Alaska during the pandemic. When packrafting this way, a large portion of your gear is stuff inside the packraft tubes. The duffle bags are mainly just used for air travel and after that were useless since everything was already in a dry bag and stuffed in the tubes. We found that our usual duffels ended up being bulky and just did not fit right inside the tubes. The Blackhole 100l when packed up was stuffed in the front of the packraft and never removed until we were packing up for the bush flight out. The bag size is perfect as it's not too big for checked baggage air travel and hold right about 50 lbs of gear! Even our bush pilot commented on how nice the bags were for the size when we were loading the Cessna. They hold a lot ... MoreWe started wilderness packrafting in Alaska during the pandemic.
