As expected, another fantastic piece from Patagonia

Had been eyeing this jacket for many many months and when it finally went on sale (with great colour options on sale too might I add) I had to finally pull the trigger. Great value for such a warm, comfortable and versatile jacket. I'm 6'0 and 185-190lbs, ordered a medium, and the jacket fits well. Has room under to layer, but even if I am just wearing a tee it doesn't feel baggy or like I'm swimming inside of it. Super warm with the liner layer keeping cold out and heat in. As expected from Patagonia, incredibly well built and feels so solid. The only thing about this jacket I didnt expect was that it does run a LITTLE short. Cuts off just below my belt line whereas I expected it to go maybe another 1-2" below that. Regardless, an amazing jacket that I'd recommend ... MoreHad been eyeing this jacket for many many months and when it finally went on sale (with great colour options on sale too might I add) I had to finally pull the trigger. I bought this mainly for casual use (cragging, hiking, and camping ect..) here in the PNW, and to fill the gap between performance fit fleece (R1 hoody) air permeable insulaiton (nano air) and windproof insulation(down sweater). I wanted something windproof so it could be worn alone and so i can bike commute with it.Windproof/Breathable - I hate the wind, but also get pretty sweaty, but so far Im impressed. It defenitly knocks out the wind, but not quite as much as a true windbreak (houdini). The wind proofing does limit the breathability, however, and I've noticed I can start to get pretty sweaty in higher output/warmer temps. The full zip can help, and the side pockets can be used to ventilate, which is a nice feature but Im skeptical ill be able to use this for ... MoreI bought this mainly for casual use (cragging, hiking, and camping ect..) here in the PNW, and to fill the gap between performance fit fleece (R1 hoody) air permeable insulaiton (nano air) and windproof insulation(down sweater). The dual face color is a nice touch as Its warm and stiff enough to stay upright.Fabric - The inner liner is a wicking material that has some stiffness to it. It also has an almost waxy feel which i assume is the windproof layer. It is definitely not the same material inside and out, which might be a deal breaker for some.Fit - Typical for Patagonia climbing focused items. It's boxy with broad shoulders to enable range of motion and minimize hem left with your arms up. Hem is at waist, maybe a little shorter. Sleeve length feels about right.Quality - as expected with Patagonia. Durable, well made and overall solid. Feels like I could give it to my grandkidsGiven the price it's definitely not for everyone. I really hesitated to spend this much on a "non-technical" jacket but wanted something that looked good and functioned on its own. It fits most of my use cases and is a nice variation to my current layering systems, however, the wind proofing comes with a tradeoff of breathability and its TBD how this limits functionality. I haven't been able to test it skiing yet, but unsure I'd want to wear it under a shell as I tend to run warm and sweaty, and our winters are fairly mild. Overall, I really like it thus far. A warm, bomproof, casual jacket with classic style.

This jacket is all that I thought it would be. It’s warm and fits very well. Thicker than most fleece jackets but layers are still in order if it’s winter time. I love the deep pockets on both sides as well as the chest pocket. The chest pocket is also deep and they all zip up which is vital when on the go. Very stylish. I will use it to hike, go to work, and just to throw on before I head out to a store. After purchasing the jacket it inspired me to buy the M’s Retool jacket. At this writing it’s not the Fall or Winter seasons but I’ve tried this on and know that I love it already.

Disappointed in the design and fit
1 March 2024

Super disappointed in this jacket (especially as we love Patagonia in general). I bought it Christmas before last for my fiancé.The fit is loose in the upper which is fine, but then fits super short in the torso so he felt like he was pulling it down all the time as it felt awkward. There is a design flaw as the jacket when zipped. It has a very stiff collar which is also fine, but it pushes in toward the neck rubbing against it. It also makes it look unappealing. He wore it a few times but it just kept leaving irritated skin so he hasn’t worn it since.I just noticed it buried in the closet and reminded how disappointing it was and pretty big waste of money. Hindsight I should have just returned it. Like I said we love Patagonia in general, but this one was a huge ... MoreSuper disappointed in this jacket (especially as we love Patagonia in general). Excellent product, practically bulletproof it comes to wind resistance and quite warm.

This is the best windproof jacket I have ever had in the past 50 years. I’m not as svelte as I used to be and I would appreciate some adjustment, perhaps a toggle in the waist and a little bit bigger across the shoulders and a tad longer in the length. If it came with a hood it would be practically perfect in the cold and dry. Worn with a t shirt and sweater down to windy 28°F with no discomfort. I have two of these jackets and the stiffness varies between the two. Smoothes out with wearing.

Large arms, tight torso, still awesome

So this jacket has been burned into my mind since my teenage days as a climbing bumb. Now that i don't have the time for long road trips, having this jacket is like having your favorite stuffed bunny to comfort you when those excel spreadsheets got you down. As for sizing it is oddly roomy in the arms but tight in the torso. This makes layering a bit strange because you can't fit a vest under it but you could fit extra arm sleeves if that's your thing. wearing another sweater under it creates the same problem. Despite this I still love it and it is perfect for in/out of cars or when the temp is between 0 and 15 celcius. I also notice that the fleece in the blue colour is longer pile and shaggier than the fleece in camo making it more prone to pilling. it doesn't ... MoreSo this jacket has been burned into my mind since my teenage days as a climbing bumb. Also many countries ban any camo pattern in clothing. People do love hugging you when wearing this jacket so that's a bonus. At the sale price it is excellent and you will be the envy of all those who buy homages to this jacket if that's your thing.

Love Love Love It

I kind of have a thing for jackets and sweatshirts to keep warm in the winter and this is now my favorite. I'm 68, in good shape, and I wear this outside and also inside if I get chilly. Comfortable and nice and warm! I like the short length and the collar that snugs up to below your chin and keeps you neck toasty. Easy to regulate heat by using the high quality zipper. Also has great elastic cuffs on the arms and torso that are snug but I don't feel them. Had it out while walking on a windy day and it blocked the wind nicely. Have other fleece jackets with no wind block and they don't get used a much. Nice job Patagonia! 5'10" and 150.

Odd fit and design

This review only speaks to how the jacket fit and its design. I never wore it in the elements so have no opinion on its performance. I’m comparing it to the better sweater jacket I own, which fits really well and is well designed with great proportions to its parts and a sensible layout. For the retro-x, its chest pocket is really low, so is more near the sternum/bottom of your ribcage, so not on your chest. This seems like an odd place for it and it feels unnatural. The hand pockets are placed high off the waist, which leads to an unnatural positioning of your arms when your hands are in them. My shoulders felt tensed and unrelaxed. The arms have way too much fabric so they are baggy around your arms. My shoulders felt tensed and unrelaxed. The arms have way too much fabric so they are baggy around your arms. I compared them to the better sweater and their circumference is 3-4 inches greater. Combined with the stiffness and thickness of the fabric and it’s like you’re wearing a gorilla suit. It's probably great for layering. The jacket length also seems short and it rides a bit high off the waist. It measured about 1 inch shorter than the better sweater from the armpit. If this jacket is designed to block cold winds, being a bit longer would make more sense. Finally, the front zipper catches around the neck seam when being pulled down from fully zipped, so I had to wrestle with it every single time I tried it on. There was some weird sweet spot where it wouldn't catch but it was hard to find.I will be returning this jacket and will make do with my better sweater. This could be a really great jacket if better designed. It is surprising that Patagonia jackets can vary so greatly in overall fit and design, you would think there would be some continuity and standardizaiton of design and fit.

The only jacket you need
10 February 2024

Seriously warm jacket. The windproof lining is awesome and the fluffy exterior makes the jacket extra cozy. Sizing chart is a bit weird, but it does fit true to size. My chest is 37/38 and I normally order XS, but for this jacket I ordered a S and I’m still able to wear a relatively thick long sleeve shirt paired with a vest underneath the fleece. Jacket zips up fine with everything underneath and I still have full range of arm movement. I find the collar a little too stiff, but when it’s really cold and windy I appreciate it.Maybe it’s because I bought cheap fleece jackets in the past, but this is the only fleece jacket I’ve ever owned that doesn’t smell absolutely rank after using it.Highly recommend

I purchased the medium when it was 50% in store which came out to $114. Great deal! The jacket is comfy and so warm, you definitely can wear just a t shirt under it when its about 40 degrees out. I wear this indoors at work when its cold and outside walking around outside. The windproof layer is soft for me, not stiff and scratchy like others say. I bought this for my bday bc of the sale and I always wanted one. Its a great value especially at this price.
