I have been rocking a Patagonia R2 windproof fleece vest for more than 15 years and got this to "replace" it as it's showing it's age. I absolutely love this vest and it definitely replaces the R2 in many ways. Fit is spot on with normal Patagonia medium that I wear. Durability seems like it is going to be excellent. For me this thing is actually too warm! The membrane appears to be on the front and the back, which limits the breathablity a bit much for me in many situations. The pile of the fleece itself is nice looking, but it's bulky and a magnet for pet hair. I'll know better how much this vest will actually replace my old R2 next spring as we haven't hit the true cold weather here in WI yet. Right now I am wearing it daily to get accustomed to its warmth, but ... MoreI have been rocking a Patagonia R2 windproof fleece vest for more than 15 years and got this to "replace" it as it's showing it's age. I ride my cargo bike everywhere and depending on temperature and precip I either wear a hard shell or windproof lightly insulated soft shell as my outer layer.

Im a huge fan of the Retro X line and own 2 of the vests. I have also owned 2 of the jackets. The vests are a slimmer fit than the jackets. I am about a 42 chest and 32 waist. The Medium fits me perfect but I like my vests closer fitting. I also own a large which I can fit bulky sweaters under. In the Retro X jacket I can even fit into my wife’s small but a medium has plenty of room for me. As for functionality, it is warm and the only complaint I have is the zipper at full zip is a little stiff and so you have to make sure the wind flap beneath the zipper is flat or the zipper will irritate your chin. As for Sun & Ski, I honestly Google searched and had a hard time finding a Natural color in medium. Sun & Ski had it and I normally go to more well known sites for ... MoreIm a huge fan of the Retro X line and own 2 of the vests. I have also owned 2 of the jackets. The vest is relatively warm. It's relatively warm in the cool spring nights and should be warm for autumn/winter wearing. It's good for everyday wear when it's cold(er) weather but not for exercising as it'll be too hot and heavy. It's more form fitting than the jacket. Even Patagonia reps have stated that at the Patagonia website's comment section of the vest. XL fits a bit tighter but still fine. If you want roominess, then buy 1 size UP.There's a meshlike barrier that's sewed inside the vest which provides the windproof protection. The vest is a little heavy than a regular fleece vest but it's worth it to block out the wind and for warmth. It also has a slight stretch. This thing's fantastic. I even fell asleep in it once. Comfortable, high-quality & stylishly retro. The only thing I can knock is that you have 0 chance of getting the collar to stay down, regardless of how high it's zipped. Even with that & the price, I like it enough to give top marks.
I had been looking at this vest for several years, and finally pulled the trigger on buying it. Ordering was easy, and shipping was very fast. I had the vest two days after I placed the order.I wear a size Large in most things. Based on the sizing chart, I thought a Large in this would work. Not even close. Wearing this over only a shirt it was possible to zip up, but it was uncomfortably tight. Think sausage casing tight. I wanted a vest, not a girdle. With other vests that I have I am able to wear a chamois shirt or even a reasonably thick sweater under the vest. That would be impossible with this item. When 90% of the garments that I wear are either a size Medium or Large, and this Large fits like compression shorts, it suggests that there is a sizing issue that ... MoreI had been looking at this vest for several years, and finally pulled the trigger on buying it. When 90% of the garments that I wear are either a size Medium or Large, and this Large fits like compression shorts, it suggests that there is a sizing issue that Patagonia should address.I did sent the original back The person who I spoke with was very helpful, and the exchange process went smoothly. I will hope that the XL is a better match to my physique. If not, I will revise this review or provide an updated review. Let me encourage you to heed all the other reviews that are posted as well; there are multiple reports of this vest running very small. Usually for an item sold at a premium price, and this vest certainly is very expensive for what it is, the fit is more generous. I don't know who the size models were for this one, but I would suggest that their torso is not that of a person who normally fits into a size Large without issue.
I'm a woman but often prefer the men's colors - got this in-store on sale and love it! It's a boxy fit and a great length, very protective against the wind. Love the blue and red trim. Only note is that the interior lining on the collar can itch during the first few wears.
This is a well-made, comfortable vest. Contrary to the "what's my size?" XL recommendation, the L fits me well - I normally wear a 44L jacket and all my Patagonia jackets are L. The colors are great, especially the blue piping around the arm holes. Be advised the zipper underlay is a little thick and slightly stiff, and prevents the right side of the collar to lay down identically with the right. That will change as I wear the vest more, however. The reason I give this 4 rather than 5 stars is the cut is boxy and bags out a bit around the waist. I wish Patagonia would offer at least some of its garments with an athletic cut.
Just got the vest the other day and so far I love it. I purchased a size Large which for vests, coats and most sweaters is what I take unless it's described as a more tailored fit, then I will probably go up to XL.I love the vest's features, build, style and colors. It's definitely a quality vest that I really can't envision it breaking down in anyway over time.Unfortunately it is a bit snug fitting down the chest and sides. It does fit me, but I don't think I can wear anything else but a t-shirt or a thinner long sleeve shirt. I imagine if I can lose 3-5lbs then it will fit perfect. If I bought again, I would go up to the XL size so I could be sure to have room in case I am in a pinch and have to use a dryer rather than letting it air dry on my rack.
I bought this as a luxury item for the trail. Its weight is minimal but it adds the extra warmth I was seeking and its very comfortable. I like the fit. I like that the collar fully zips. The breast pocket is large enough for my old man large screen phone. The other pockets are large enough for gloved hands if the gloves are slender. Overall I am pleased and will most likely wear this off trail too.
