Last year I tried this jacket on in a REI in my usual size, XL. The fit to me seemed tight and it was really thin so it made me rather uncomfortable like I was wearing a wet tshirt. Great little jacket. I just wanted something for mountain biking that would take the bite off my skin at the beginning of a ride but could also fit in my pocket or a frame bag once I warmed up. It is perfect for that and I also find it to be comfortable to just wear around town or on my way to work. The wind protection it offers makes up for lightweight fleece's warmth and it is way lighter - not to mention that I can put this on over long sleeves and it slides ride over whatever I'm wearing under it. Basically there are two tiny notches that each bungee strand hooks into and holds it snug enough be able to cinch down, but on the waist every time I pull the strings they pop out of the little notches and then I have to feed them back into the notches and very carefully cinch it down without popping them out again. The hood uses the same thing and for some reason works fine so they are probably just not a super consistent mechanism.

I just purchased my third iteration of the Houdini jacket, all with different designs. My first one from the early 2010 era used a more breathable and softer material, but wasnt as water resistant as the latter versions. My second Houdini served as my second skin for trail runs and ultras - wasnt as breathable as the earlier version, but the fit was perfect and there were no issues with the design other than the screen printed logo peeling off over time. This most recent design retains a similar breathability/warmth as the last Houdini, however, the design/pattern is not too great. The pocket orientation should have remained horizontal instead of vertical - the pocket tends to flap out when unzipped and occasionally gets caught in the zipper when zipping up. When the jacket is open, the pocket-pouch flaps around on your chest and is annoying. I assume there was a savings in production to reduce more stitches/seams, or it helps with packing the pouch, but it spoils the jacket.It's possible this jacket is intended only for wearing zipped up, and the smallest size possible, to reduce these two issues. But if you want to wear the Houdini as a style piece not just for active wear the new design is a bummer.My previous three Houdinis, two of which have been repaired with the Worn Wear program, and I love to death, are perfect.I hope they fix this design. If you're experiencing these problems, the Houdini Pull-over seems to be a good alternative. I had a windbreaker and I thought it was lightweight until I got this one! I was actually shocked at how thin it was and was anxious to see how it worked, especially since the price was a little steep. It did not disappoint! Ive worn it on my last 3 hikes and I dont think I will ever hike or backpack without it. It folds into a pocket on the jacket making it SO tiny and able to fit anywhere! Did I mention how scrumptious the color green is? I have it in fresh teal and the color just makes my heart happy!Loved the jacket so much I bought my husband one and he is as big a fan as I am. Havent been in the rain with it so I cant speak to the water resistant coating but even if it didnt have that feature I would still love it!
My wife raved about this coat for the past year.. It is the perfect coat for wearing on the windy days at the beach, on a hike, under a life preserver while kayak or SUP, as the top layer to block the wind or to keep you dry from any light rain, and packs into nothing so super easy to always have with you.. she even layers it over her nano puff on days its cooler and the wind is a bit too strong. I mean she sold me on this must have coat. Shes not wrong. I am so thrilled to have a simple coat that is so versatile. I pack it for runs, hikes, biking, water sports or just about anything. It fits in both a hip pack or backpack with no issues. It is even breathable. I finally understand why she raved about it. I highly recommend.

The Houdini is an amazing jacket. Its incredibly light and flexible. Its perfect for hikes with elevation, as it provides insulation but you never get too hot. It also provides a little protection from the rain.The tag on the back is a deal breaker though. If you wear this jacket with the hood down, the fabric has so little rigidity that the tag flips the very top portion of the jacket inside out. It is incredibly annoying, to the point that I dont enjoy wearing the jacket unless the hood is up. A smaller or printed tag seems like it would be an easy solution.I oscillate between small and medium in Patagonia but this jacket is definitely smaller than most of their jackets so size up.
